Computational issues in fitting joint frailty models for recurrent events with an associated terminal event.

2020

Abstract Background and objective: Joint frailty regression models are intended for the analysis of recurrent event times in the presence of informative drop-outs. They have been proposed for clinical trials to estimate the effect of some treatment on the rate of recurrent heart failure hospitalisations in the presence of drop-outs due to cardiovascular death. Whereas a R-software-package for fitting joint frailty models is available, some technical issues have to be solved in order to use SASⓇ 1 software, which is required in the regulatory environment of clinical trials. Methods: First, we demonstrate how to solve these issues by deriving proper likelihood-decompositions, in particular fo…

Mining Interpretable Rules for Sentiment and Semantic Relation Analysis Using Tsetlin Machines

2020

Tsetlin Machines (TMs) are an interpretable pattern recognition approach that captures patterns with high discriminative power from data. Patterns are represented as conjunctive clauses in propositional logic, produced using bandit-learning in the form of Tsetlin Automata. In this work, we propose a TM-based approach to two common Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks, viz. Sentiment Analysis and Semantic Relation Categorization. By performing frequent itemset mining on the patterns produced, we show that they follow existing expert-verified rule-sets or lexicons. Further, our comparison with other widely used machine learning techniques indicates that the TM approach helps maintain inter…

Action and Deontology

2015

This chapter is concerned with the deontology of actions. According to the presented approach, actions and not propositions are deontologically loaded. Norms direct actions and define the circumstances in which actions are permitted, prohibited, or mandated. Norms are therefore viewed as deontological rules of conduct. The definitions of permission, prohibition, and obligatoriness of an action are formulated in terms of the relation of transition of an action system. A typology of atomic norms is presented. To each atomic norm a proposition is associated and called the normative proposition corresponding to this norm. A logical system, the basic deontic logic, is defined and an adequate sem…

Foreign Language Teacher Burnout: A Research Proposal

2011

Burnout is a serious psychological syndrome that can affect not only an individual’s well-being, but also the functioning of whole organisations, such as schools. It consists of three basic stages: exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. Not only personal variables, but also work-setting characteristics influence burnout. The teaching profession is claimed to be extremely demanding, hence teachers seem to be prone to burnout. This may be the reason why the syndrome has already been investigated in reference to teachers of various subjects or school levels. Yet, there has been no research to date attempting to investigate burnout in foreign language teachers. It m…

Rationale, design and methods of CTCA-PRORECAD (Computed Tomography Coronary Angiography Prognostic Registry for Coronary Artery Disease): a multicen…

2013

PURPOSE: This study was done to assess the prognostic value of computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA) in a large multicentre population of patients with suspected coronary artery disease (CAD) and, in particular, its incremental value compared with traditional methods for risk stratification. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective observational study that began in January 2003 conducted on patients with suspected CAD assessed with CTCA on the basis of symptoms (chest pain, dyspnoea) and/or abnormal or equivocal stress test and/or a high cardiovascular risk profile. The participating centres will provide data obtained with CTCA performed with 16-slice or higher equipment. Ex…

Counseling Patients with a Glioblastoma Amenable Only for Subtotal Resection: Results of a Multicenter Retrospective Assessment of Survival and Neuro…

2017

Background Patients with a glioblastoma (GB) amenable only for subtotal resection (STR) represent a challenge in patient counseling. Our objective was to assess impact of extent of resection (EoR) on survival and clinical outcome of these patients. Methods We performed a retrospective multicenter assessment. Patients receiving an intended STR in 3 centers with unilocular, primary, highly eloquent GB who received the same adjuvant treatment were included. We assessed EoR, neurologic outcome, and rate of complications. Progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were calculated with Kaplan–Meier estimations. We used 1% EoR and 1-cm3 steps to detect a threshold for a minimal EoR …

Obligations and Conditionals

2015

The paper considers two kinds of medieval obligational disputations (positio, rei veritas) and the medieval genre of sophismata in relation to the kinds of inferences accepted in them. The main texts discussed are the anonymous Obligationes parisienses from the early 13th century and Richard Kilvington’s Sophismata from the early 14th century. Four different kinds of warranted transition from an antecedent to a consequent become apparent in the medieval discussions: (1) the strong logical validity of basic propositional logic, (2) analytic validity based on conceptual containment, (3) merely semantic impossibility of the antecedent being true without the consequent, and (4) intuitively true…

Effective-Lagrangian formulation of generalized vector dominance. II

1975

As in a preceding paper we generalize the Lagrangian of Lee and Zumino to include several mutually interacting vector mesons. The treatment is more general in the sense that all possible interactions between the vector mesons, compatible with the field-current proportionality relations, are now discussed. It is moreover demonstrated that also the fields corresponding to the physical vector mesons satisfy a field-current proportionality relation of exactly the same form. Comparison of the different schemes and their implications for the magnetic moments of the vector mesons are discussed.
