The identification of the causal effects of grade retention policies is of enormous relevance for researchers and policymakers alike. Taking advantage of the availability of more detailed longitudinal datasets, researchers have been able to apply different identification strategies that address the classical problems of selection bias and unobserved heterogeneity that have plagued previous studies on the effect of retention. Didactical note: probabilistic conditionality in a Boolean algebra

This note deals with two logical topics and concerns Boolean Algebras from an elementary point of view. First we consider the class of operations on a Boolean Algebra that can be used for modelling ``If-then" propositions. These operations, or Conditionals, are characterized under the hypothesis that they only obey to the Modus Ponens-Inequality, and it is shown that only six of them are boolean two-place functions. The number of maximal subgroups and probabilistic generation of finite groups

[EN] In this survey we present some significant bounds for the number of maximal subgroups of a given index of a finite group. As a consequence, new bounds for the number of random generators needed to generate a finite d-generated group with high probability which are significantly tighter than the ones obtained in the paper of Jaikin-Zapirain and Pyber (Random generation of finite and profinite groups and group enumeration, Ann. Math., 183 (2011) 769-814) are obtained. The results of Jaikin-Zapirain and Pyber, as well as other results of Lubotzky, Detomi, and Lucchini, appear as particular cases of our theorems.

A aquest treball es desenvolupa una investigació sobre el potencial de la simulació com a mètode de resolució de problemes de probabilitat amb contingut heurístic i les implicacions que té per a l’ensenyament. Al mateix temps s’elabora una unitat didàctica basada en la resolució de problemes de probabilitat per experimentar el mètode amb alumnes de 13 i 14 anys i es mostra com pot contribuir a la formació de l’alumne, en concret amb el judici subjectiu front a situacions d’incertesa i a fer ús d’eines estadístiques per a analitzar un conjunt de dades provinents de la simulació d’un problema.
