Problems with variation: an educational experience of cultural transposition with prospective primary teachers
2022
The paper presents some theoretical reflections and some methodological notes about a Professional Development (PD) path worked out during the last two years by Italian researchers for prospective Primary teachers. The theoretical construct of Cultural Transposition defines the framework of the PD path's activities and the related research. It was used to define an interesting cultural lent to delineate possible new approaches for effective pre-service teacher education programs, in particular for the Primary level. The defined methodology was based on the possibility to reflect about the decentralization of didactic practices based on a specific cultural context through one or more contact…

The interplay between emotion regulation, interpersonal problems and eating symptoms in individuals with obesity: A network analysis study
2023
Introduction: A complex and bidirectional relationship between eating and psychological symptoms in individuals with obesity has been proposed. This study aims to identify the specific processes playing a role in this association, using a data-driven approach. Methods: Two hundred ninety-four adults with obesity, including 106 (36 %) with binge-eating disorder, were consecutively admitted to a specialized public center. They completed self-report questionnaires to assess emotion regulation, interpersonal problems, self-esteem, binge-eating symptoms, and expectancies regarding eating behaviors. To assess the interplay among eating and psychological variables, a network analysis was used. The…
Are balance problems connected to reading speed or the familial risk of dyslexia?
2011
Aim The aim of this study was to examine the connection between balance problems and reading speed in children with and without a familial risk of dyslexia by controlling for the effects of attention, hyperactivity, and cognitive and motor functioning. Method The prevalence of balance problems was studied in 94 children (48 females, 46 males) with a familial risk of dyslexia (at-risk group) and 85 children (38 females, 47 males) without a risk of dyslexia (comparison group). Further, the relationships between balance problems (at age 8y 6mo), reading proficiency (at age 9y), attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (at age 8y), and cognitive (at age 8y 6mo) and motor functioning (at age 6y …
“How Real People Really Need Mathematics in the Real World”—Authenticity in Mathematics Education
2018
This paper discusses authenticity from the perspective of mathematics education. Often, school mathematics offers students inauthentic word problems, which don’t show the authentic usefulness of mathematics in real life. In some tasks, authentic aspects are combined with inauthentic ones (e.g., an authentic context, but the question is artificial and different from what people within that context would ask). Several studies show that students are more motivated by authentic questions than by authentic contexts. Embedding these findings, I discuss issues associated with defining authenticity in education. A first issue is that philosophers use the term to characterize a person’s existential …

Stability of the Calderón problem in admissible geometries
2014
In this paper we prove log log type stability estimates for inverse boundary value problems on admissible Riemannian manifolds of dimension n ≥ 3. The stability estimates correspond to the uniqueness results in [13]. These inverse problems arise naturally when studying the anisotropic Calderon problem. peerReviewed
Unique continuation property and Poincar inequality for higher order fractional Laplacians with applications in inverse problems
2020
We prove a unique continuation property for the fractional Laplacian $(-\Delta)^s$ when $s \in (-n/2,\infty)\setminus \mathbb{Z}$. In addition, we study Poincar\'e-type inequalities for the operator $(-\Delta)^s$ when $s\geq 0$. We apply the results to show that one can uniquely recover, up to a gauge, electric and magnetic potentials from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map associated to the higher order fractional magnetic Schr\"odinger equation. We also study the higher order fractional Schr\"odinger equation with singular electric potential. In both cases, we obtain a Runge approximation property for the equation. Furthermore, we prove a uniqueness result for a partial data problem of the $d$-…
Morse-Smale index theorems for elliptic boundary deformation problems.
2012
AbstractMorse-type index theorems for self-adjoint elliptic second order boundary value problems arise as the second variation of an energy functional corresponding to some variational problem. The celebrated Morse index theorem establishes a precise relation between the Morse index of a geodesic (as critical point of the geodesic action functional) and the number of conjugate points along the curve. Generalization of this theorem to linear elliptic boundary value problems appeared since seventies. (See, for instance, Smale (1965) [12], Uhlenbeck (1973) [15] and Simons (1968) [11] among others.) The aim of this paper is to prove a Morse–Smale index theorem for a second order self-adjoint el…
