Assessment of EVAR Complications using CIRSE Complication Classification System in the UK Tertiary Referral Centre: A ∼6-Year Retrospective Analysis …

2021

Purpose: To retrospectively analyse complications in endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) interventions and evaluate if the CIRSE (Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe) complication classification system is appropriate as a standardized classification tool for EVAR patients. Materials and Methods: Demographic, procedural and complication data in 719 consecutive patients undergoing EVAR at one institution from January 2014 to October 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. Data (imaging reports, procedural reports, nurse notes, discharge summary reports) were collected consulting the electronic patient record system (EPR) of the hospital and cleaned and stored in a Micro…

Management of primary ameloblastoma of the jaw: a 15 years' experience.

2012

AIM: The aim of this retrospective study was to describe our 15-year experience in the management of primary ameloblastoma of the jaw. METHODS: We investigated 26 patients who had undergone surgical treatment for a single lesion, comprising six lesions of the maxillary bone and 20 tumors of the mandible: 73% had a radiolucent multilocular lesion; 23% a unicystic lesion; and 4% had an extraosseous form of the tumor. The smaller lesions (diameter <3 cm) were treated by conservative approaches; the larger lesions required radical surgical resection. Two groups were created according to whether the patients had received conservative or aggressive surgery. RESULTS: The recurrence rate was estima…

The impact of two whole blood inline filters on markers of coagulation, complement and cell activation

2005

Background and Objectives  There exists a current lack of information about the impact of different inline filters, used for the leucoreduction of whole blood (WB), on the levels of clotting factors and markers of coagulation, complement and cell activation in plasma. Only a few small comparisons of different types of WB inline filters have been published to date. Materials and Methods  This study compared two plasma types of 200 units each. Both study groups were derived from WB, inline-filtered and held for 2 h at 20° between donation and filtration. Then, 200 units (Group A) were filtered using a positively charged polyester filter (Baxter RZ2000) and the other 200 units (Group B) were f…

Comparison of Ondansetron versus Clonidine efficacy for prevention of postoperative pain, nausea and vomiting after orthognathic surgeries : a triple…

2018

Background The aim of this randomized controlled triple blind trial was to compare the efficacy of clonidine with dexamethasone versus ondansetron with dexamethasone for postoperative pain, nausea and vomiting prevention in orthognathic surgery patients. Material and Methods In this clinical trial study, 30 consecutive patients with skeletal class III deformities were candidates for orthognathic surgery in Qaem hospital, Mashhad University of medical sciences, Mashhad, Iran from March to November 2017. These subjects were randomly assigned to two equal number groups, ondansetron or clonidine. Patients received either oral ondansetron 8mg or oral clonidine 150μg as premedication, 1 hour befo…

Costochondral graft with green-stick fracture used in reconstruction of the mandibular condyle : experience in 13 clinical cases

2008

Since its publication in 1920 by Gillies, costochondral grafts have been used by surgeons to replace an injured mandibular condyle and to reconstruct the temporomandibular joint. This procedure is currently applied in cases of congenital dysplasia, developmental defects, temporomandibular ankylosis, neoplastic disease, osteoarthritis and post-traumatic dysfunction. Over the years, various procedures for the reconstruction with this type of graft have been described. In 1989, Mosby and Hiatt described a technique for setting the graft securely, reducing the space between the graft and the mandibular area. In 1998, Monje and Martín-Granizo developed a variation of this method, enabling a prec…

Pain and swelling after periapical surgery related to oral hygiene and smoking.

2007

Objectives To evaluate pain and swelling during the first week after periapical surgery and its relation to patient age, gender, oral hygiene, and smoking. Study design One hundred two patients (31 men and 71 women) with a mean age of 40.2 years underwent periapical surgery. Age, gender, and oral hygiene and cigarette smoking before and during the postoperative course were noted. Pain and swelling scores were recorded on a descriptive 4-point scale at 2, 6, and 12 hours after surgery, and each day thereafter for 1 week. The data were statistically evaluated for significant differences. Results The highest intensity of pain occurred during the first 48 hours, and swelling peaked on the secon…

Increased age-associated mortality risk in HLA-mismatched hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

2016

We investigated a possible interaction between age-associated risk and HLA-mismatch associated risk on prognosis in different age categories of recipients of unrelated hematopoietic stem cell transplants (HSCT) (n=3019). Patients over 55 years of age transplanted with 8/10 donors showed a mortality risk of 2.27 (CI 1.70–3.03, P<0.001) and 3.48 (CI 2.49–4.86, P<0.001) when compared to 10/10 matched patients in the same age group and to 10/10 matched patients aged 18–35 years, respectively. Compared to 10/10 matched transplantations within each age category, the Hazards Ratio for 8/10 matched transplantation was 1.14, 1.40 and 2.27 in patients aged 18–35 years, 36–55 and above 55 years. Model…

Risk factors for recurrence and incontinence after anal fistula surgery

2009

Objective: Fistula-in-ano continues to raise problems that require important therapeutic decisions. Our aim was to evaluate its recurrence and incontinence risk factors. Method: We analysed a series of 279 patients who had undergone anal fistula surgery with long-term follow-up. Results: 42.7% of the fistulae were considered complex and 46% had been referred from other institutions. There was delayed healing or recurrence in 7.2% patients, which appeared at a median of 4 months. The factors associated with recurrence were the type of fistula (extrasphincteric/suprasphincteric), nonidentification of internal opening (IO), recurrent or complex fistulae (CF), and associated chronic abscess. On…

Biomechanical implications of excessive endograft protrusion into the aortic arch after thoracic endovascular repair

2015

Endografts placed in the aorta for thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) may determine malappositioning to the lesser curvature of the aortic wall, thus resulting in a devastating complication known as endograft collapse. This premature device failure commonly occurs in young individuals after TEVAR for traumatic aortic injuries as a result of applications outside the physical conditions for which the endograft was designed. In this study, an experimentally-calibrated fluid-structure interaction (FSI) model was developed to assess the hemodynamic and stress/strain distributions acting on the excessive protrusion extension (PE) of endografts deployed in four young patients underwent TE…
