Noble gases in tracking volcanic processess
2007
The expressions able to evaluate the contributions of the three natural sources of helium (e.g., atmosphere,in magma, following the solubility model proposed by Nuccio and Paonita (2001). In particular, variations of He/Ne and He/CO2 ratios have been used to compute the initial and final pressure of an ascending magma (Fig. 2) (Caracausi et alii 2003b, Rizzo et alii 2006). This model was subsequently implemented with S, Cl and F (Aiuppa et alii 2004), providing an useful geochemical tool aimed at giving an early warning for forecasting volcanic eruptions. The high helium flux measured at Mefite d’Ansanto in the Irpinian Apennines, displaying a He isotope composition analogous to that of Mt.…
Anticipatory Postural Adjustments and kinematic arm features when postural stability is manipulated
2018
International audience; Beyond the classical paradigm that presents the Anticipatory Postural Adjustments (APAs) as a manner to create forces that counteract disturbances arising from the moving segment during a pointing task, there is a controversial discussion about the role APAs to facilitate the movement and perform a task accurately. In addition, arm kinematics features are classically used to infer the content of motor planning for the execution and the control of arm movements, The present study aimed to disentangle the conflicting role of APAs during an arm-pointing task in which the subjects reach a central diode that suddenly turns on, while their postural stability was manipulate…
Dyvalocca : un projet pour l'étude des nuages bas de saison sèche sur la façade atlantique de l'Afrique centrale et de leur impact bioclimatique sur …
2020
Low-level clouds are key components of the climate but are not well represented in weather and climate models. Recently it has been shown that an extensive low-level cloud cover develops during the June-September main dry season in western equatorial Africa, from the coastal plains of Gabon and Congo-Brazzaville to the inland plateaus downstream of the low-mountain crests. Such a cloudy main dry season is unique in the moist Tropics and is likely to explain the presence of the densest and evergreen forests of Central Africa as evapotranspiration is low and the quality of light is high. The ANR-DFG funded “DYVALOCCA” project will conduct from 2020 to 2022 a field campaign, raise existing in-…
Welded section defence by LRPD devices
2023
The present paper concerns a special application of some recently proposed structural devices, called LRPD, able to protect the welded sections of frame steel structures from undesired brittle collapse ensuring the good expected ductile behaviour. Standard I-shaped cross-sections are treated, and the proposed devices are suitably considered as moment resisting connections between beams and columns. At first the domain representing the brittle safe conditions is defined in the N,V,M space; then a sample plane frame subjected to seismic load conditions is studied and it is proved that, equipping the structure with the proposed devices suitably designed, the generalized stresses at the welded …
Analysis of the Potential of an Increase in Yeast Output Resulting from the Application of Additional Process Wastewater in the Evaporator Station
2019
This paper reports the results of an analysis of process wastewater streams in the context of an increase in yeast production. This research is based on the analysis of data from the biggest yeast factory in Europe. The research presented in this paper involves the analysis of the influence of direction of additional wastewater into the evaporator station on yeast production. In the process wastewater, nitrogen is mainly present in organic forms. The analysis reported in this paper involves the concentration of total nitrogen in wastewater streams, as it is the main parameter applied to determine the amount of wastewater that can be applied in agricultural fields. Directing additional waste…
Metody analizy zrównoważoności rozwoju wielkich społeczno-terytorialnych systemów – modelowanie semantyczne procesów w sektorze transportu
2016
Late Jurassic (Kimmeridgian–Tithonian) stable isotopes (δ18O, δ13C) and Mg/Ca ratios: New palaeoclimate data from Helmsdale, northeast Scotland
2010
Abstract The data presented here provide the first detailed stable isotope ( δ 18 O, δ 13 C) and geochemical (Mg/Ca) investigation of Kimmeridgian–Tithonian belemnites from the Helmsdale Coast, Scotland, UK. Oxygen and carbon stable isotope values from well preserved specimens range from − 2.8 to + 0.3‰ and from − 2.3 to + 2.8‰ respectively. The oxygen isotope data are consistent with palaeotemperatures of up to 24 °C in the Early Kimmeridgian cymodoce Zone and down to 11 °C in the Mid Tithonian rotunda–fittoni Zones. These estimates are strongly supported by the Mg/Ca data, which also indicate a cooling episode (and very similar palaeotemperatures, 11–22 °C) at this time. The cooling event…
A 2600-year record of past polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) deposition at Holzmaar (Eifel, Germany)
2014
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a proxy for climate- and human-related historical fire activity which has rarely been used beyond 1800 AD. We explored the concentration and composition patterns of PAHs together with other proxies (charcoal, C, N, S, δ13C, δ15N, and δ34S) in a sediment core of Holzmaar as indicators of variations in climate and anthropogenic activity over the past 2600 years. The concentrations of pyrogenic PAHs remained low (< 500 ng g− 1) from the pre-Roman Iron Age (600 BC) until the first significant increases to ca. 1000–1800 ng g− 1 between 1700 and 1750 AD related to regional iron production. The highest increases in pyrogenic PAH concentrations occurred w…
Unraveling environmental histories from skeletal diaries — Advances in sclerochronology
2013
High-resolution proxy archives from aquatic settings are essential to better understand processes and mechanisms of global change. During the last decade, it has become increasingly evident that calcified tissues of bivalve mollusks and cold-water corals, in particular, can significantly increase our knowledge of seasonal to multi-decadal paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental variability in the extratropical oceans and coastal marine settings. Daily, tidal, fortnightly and annual growth patterns of periodically formed skeletal hard parts provide a means to place the proxy record in a precise temporal context. Their extreme longevity coupled with the running similarity between growth increment…
