Facial animation by reverse morphing on a sequence of real images: application to film and video production

2000

Research on facial animation is as vast as the many interests and needs that can be found in the general public, television or film production. For Mac Guff Ligne, a company specialized in the fabrication of special effects and computer generated images, the needs and the constraints on such a topic are very big. Morphing is often used in facial animation, and consists in mixing several expression models. As we will discover, the advantages in using morphing are numerous, but the animation workload remains long and time-consuming. Our goal is to propose a fast and reliable animation tool that is based on the same morphing technique with which the graphic artists are familiar. Our method is …

Features extraction on complex images

2005

The accessibility of inexpensive and powerful computers has allowed true digital holography to be used for industrial inspection using microscopy. This technique allows the capture of a complex image (i.e., one containing magnitude and phase), and the reconstruction of the phase and magnitude information. Digital holograms give a new dimension to texture analysis, since the topology information can be used as an additional way to extract features. This new technique can be used to extend previous work on the image segmentation of patterned wafers for defect detection. The paper presents a comparison between the features obtained using Gabor filtering on complex images under illumination and…

Distance-based relevance feedback using a hybrid interactive genetic algorithm for image retrieval

2011

Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) systems aim to provide a means to find pictures in large repositories without using any other information except the own content of the images, which is usually represented as a feature vector extracted from low-level descriptors. This paper describes a CBIR algorithm which combines relevance feedback, evolutionary computation concepts and distance-based learning in an attempt to reduce the existing gap between the high level semantic content of the images and the information provided by their low-level descriptors. In particular, a framework which is independent from the particular features used is presented. The effect of different crossover strategies…

Local dimensionality reduction within natural clusters for medical data analysis

2005

Inductive learning systems have been successfully applied in a number of medical domains. Nevertheless, the effective use of these systems requires data preprocessing before applying a learning algorithm. Especially it is important for multidimensional heterogeneous data, presented by a large number of features of different types. Dimensionality reduction is one commonly applied approach. The goal of this paper is to study the impact of natural clustering on dimensionality reduction for classification. We compare several data mining strategies that apply dimensionality reduction by means of feature extraction or feature selection for subsequent classification. We show experimentally on micr…

Improving distance based image retrieval using non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm

2015

Image retrieval is formulated as a multiobjective optimization problem.A multiobjective genetic algorithm is hybridized with distance based search.A parameter balances exploration (genetic search) or exploitation (nearest neighbors).Extensive comparative experimentation illustrate and assess the proposed methodology. Relevance feedback has been adopted as a standard in Content Based Image Retrieval (CBIR). One major difficulty that algorithms have to face is to achieve and adequate balance between the exploitation of already known areas of interest and the exploration of the feature space to find other relevant areas. In this paper, we evaluate different ways to combine two existing relevan…

The Expressibility of Languages and Relations by Word Equations

1997

Classically, several properties and relations of words, such as being a power of a same word, can be expressed by using word equations. This paper is devoted to study in general the expressive power of word equations. As main results we prove theorems which allow us to show that certain properties of words are not expressible as components of solutions of word equations. In particular, the primitiveness and the equal length are such properties, as well as being any word over a proper subalphabet.

Target tracking with dynamically adaptive correlation

2016

Abstract A reliable algorithm for target tracking based on dynamically adaptive correlation filtering is presented. The algorithm is capable of tracking with high accuracy the location of a target in an input video sequence without using an offline training process. The target is selected at the beginning of the algorithm. Afterwards, a composite correlation filter optimized for distortion tolerant pattern recognition is designed to recognize the target in the next frame. The filter is dynamically adapted to each frame using information of current and past scene observations. Results obtained with the proposed algorithm in synthetic and real-life video sequences, are analyzed and compared w…

Application Of Anamorphic Systems To Directional Pseudocolor Encoding

1988

An optical nonsymmetrical imaging system composed of two anamorphic spectrum analyzers in cascade is implemented. This system can provide an undistorted final image in spite of the geometrical distortion effects in the intermediate Fourier plane. The introduction of chromatic sector filters in this plane provides a real-time technique to pseudocolor encode the spatial frequency information of a black-and-white transparency. In this way, greater discrimination is achieved in the angular orientation of object details that generate the same spatial frequencies. Experimental pseudocolored images, obtained with a symmetrical system and a nonsymmetrical system, of a black-and-white transparency a…

Innovative modelling techniques in computer vision

1996

Abstract The paper is concerned with two of main research activities currently carried on at the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence lab of DIE. The first part deals with hybrid artificial vision models, intended to provide object recognition and classification capabilities to an autonomous intelligen system. In this framework, a system recovering 3-D shape information from grey-level images of a scene, building a geometric representation of the scene in terms of superquadrics at the geometric level, and reasoning about the scene at the symbolic level is described. In the second part, attention is focused on automatic indexing of image databases. JACOB, a prototypal system allowing…

New Areas of Application of Comparable Corpora

2019

This chapter describes several approaches of using comparable corpora beyond the area of MT for under-resourced languages, which is the primary focus of the ACCURAT project. Section 7.1, which is based on Rapp and Zock (Automatic dictionary expansion using non-parallel corpora. In: A. Fink, B. Lausen, W. Seidel, & A. Ultsch (Eds.) Advances in Data Analysis, Data Handling and Business Intelligence. Proceedings of the 32nd Annual Meeting of the GfKl, 2008. Springer, Heidelberg, 2010), addresses the task of creating resources for bilingual dictionaries using a seed lexicon; Sect. 7.2 (based on Rapp et al., Identifying word translations from comparable documents without a seed lexicon.
