An evaluation of the efficiency of French higher education: the case of scientific preparatory classes

2007

Looking at the famous French elite preparatory programmes called « Classes préparatoires aux grandes écoles » (CPGE), this research aimed to study the effectiveness of their training. The objective was to know if students from science CPGE develop specific behaviours that lead them to a better academic achievement in further engineering programmes (internal effectiveness) and a better professional career after graduation (external effectiveness). For comparison needs, the empirical approach focused on engineering schools enrolling both students from CPGE and students from other two-year programmes (DEUG, DUT, BTS). For assessing internal effectiveness, two surveys have been conducted; one d…

Targeting BCL-2 family proteins to overcome drug resistance in non-small cell lung cancer.

2007

Cytotoxic chemotherapies are standard of care for patients suffering from advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, objective responses are only achieved in 20% of cases and long-term survival is rarely observed. Clinically applied anticancer drugs exert at least some of their activities by inducing apoptosis. A critical step in apoptotic signal transduction is the permeabilization of the mitochondrial outer membrane (MOM), which is regulated by the BCL-2 family of proteins. Hence, therapeutic targeting of BCL-2 proteins is a promising approach to increase the drug-sensitivity of cancers. To this end we have assessed the impact of conditional expression of the proapoptotic multi…

Dendritic Cells Ameliorate Autoimmunity in the CNS by Controlling the Homeostasis of PD-1 Receptor+ Regulatory T Cells

2012

SummaryMature dendritic cells (DCs) are established as unrivaled antigen-presenting cells (APCs) in the initiation of immune responses, whereas steady-state DCs induce peripheral T cell tolerance. Using various genetic approaches, we depleted CD11c+ DCs in mice and induced autoimmune CNS inflammation. Unexpectedly, mice lacking DCs developed aggravated disease compared to control mice. Furthermore, when we engineered DCs to present a CNS-associated autoantigen in an induced manner, we found robust tolerance that prevented disease, which coincided with an upregulation of the PD-1 receptor on antigen-specific T cells. Additionally, we showed that PD-1 was necessary for DC-mediated induction o…

Applicability and perceived utility of the European Quality Instrument for Health Promotion (EQUIHP) in a health promotion programme

2018

Internal Quality Assurance for Higher Education Study Programme

2015

<p>Quality assurance for study programme is necessary precondition to realize qualitative higher education. Quality assessment is important part of quality assurance cycle. There are used different methodologies, assessment criteria and indicators to assess the higher education quality. It is clear that the assessment results which study programme will be better or worse are detected by the choice of criteria. It is difficult to find objective criteria which could be used universally for all study programme types. The aim of the research is to investigate quality assurance cycle for study programme quality and pay main attention to assessment part. The aim of assessment part is to sel…

Oxysterol mixture in hypercholesterolemia-relevant proportion causes oxidative stress-dependent eryptosis.

2014

Background/Aims: Oxysterol activity on the erythrocyte (RBC) programmed cell death (eryptosis) had not been studied yet. Effects of an oxysterol mixture in hyper-cholesterolemic-relevant proportion, and of individual compounds, were investigated on RBCs from healthy humans. Methods: Membrane phosphatidylserine (PS) externalization, calcium entry, ROS production, amino-phospholipid translocase (APLT) activity were evaluated by cytofluorimetric assays, cell volume from forward scatter. Prostaglandin PGE2 was measured by ELISA; GSH-adducts and lipoperoxides by spectrophotometry. Involvement of protein kinase C and caspase was investigated by inhibitors staurosporin, calphostin C, and Z-DEVD-FM…

A role for caspases in the differentiation of erythroid cells and macrophages

2007

Several cysteine proteases of the caspase family play a central role in many forms of cell death by apoptosis. Other enzymes of the family are involved in cytokine maturation along inflammatory response. In recent years, several caspases involved in cell death were shown to play a role in other cellular processes such as proliferation and differentiation. In the present review, we summarize the current knowledge of the role of caspases in the differentiation of erythroid cells and macrophages. Based on these two examples, we show that the nature of involved enzymes, the pathways leading to their activation in response to specific growth factors, and the specificity of the target proteins th…

A dynamic program analysis to find floating-point accuracy problems

2012

Programs using floating-point arithmetic are prone to accuracy problems caused by rounding and catastrophic cancellation. These phenomena provoke bugs that are notoriously hard to track down: the program does not necessarily crash and the results are not necessarily obviously wrong, but often subtly inaccurate. Further use of these values can lead to catastrophic errors. In this paper, we present a dynamic program analysis that supports the programmer in finding accuracy problems. Our analysis uses binary translation to perform every floating-point computation side by side in higher precision. Furthermore, we use a lightweight slicing approach to track the evolution of errors. We evaluate our…

Ranking lists and European Framework Programmes: Does university status matter for performance in Framework Programmes?

2011

The operational context for higher education institutions has become increasingly competitive: universities have to compete on national and international markets for students, staff, funding and prestige. In this context, universities have increasingly become to think of themselves as actors who are in direct competition with others, and adapt their strategies to increase their status and survive in the new environment. The possibly best-known approach to measuring the status of universities is through the various ranking lists. Though focusing on different indicators like scientific performance or reputation, ranking lists can be considered as a mechanism for highlighting and even creating…
