Microstructure development during NiAl intermetallic synthesis in reactive Ni–Al nanolayers: Numerical investigations vs. TEM observations

Abstract Heterogeneous reactions leading to the formation of intermetallic compounds in nanometric Ni–Al multilayer system are examined both numerically and experimentally. On the numerical side, the reactivity of a layered Ni–Al–Ni system is studied by means of molecular dynamics simulations, using an embedded-atom method (EAM) potential. The mechanism of nucleation and growth of the intermetallic phase is determined. Four main stages in the reactive process, which lead to the formation of rounded shape grains of intermetallic phase at the Ni–Al interface, are delineated. Reaction Sequence in the Preparation of NiAl2O4 Spinel-Mullite Composites by Sol-Gel

NiAl 2 O 4 spinel-mullite composites were prepared by simultaneous replacement of Al by Ti and/or Ni in 3:2 stoichiometric mullite. Specimens having nominal compositions 3(Al 2-2x Ni x Ti x O 3 ).2SiO 2 (x = 0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.2) and 3(Al 2-x M x O 3) .2SiO 2 (M = Ni 2+ or Ti 4+ and x = 0.05) were synthesized by sol-gel techniques, which provide homogeneous gels in the SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 system. Gel structures investigated by infrared (IR) spectroscopy revealed the formation of Al-O-Si bonds in dried gels. A nonlinear Chaikin-based binary subdivision scheme

Abstract In this work we introduce and analyze a new nonlinear subdivision scheme based on a nonlinear blending between Chaikin’s subdivision rules and the linear 3-cell subdivision scheme. Our scheme seeks to improve the lack of convergence in the uniform metric of the nonlinear scheme proposed in Amat et al. (2012), where the authors define a cell-average version of the PPH subdivision scheme (Amat et al., 2006). The properties of the new scheme are analyzed and its performance is illustrated through numerical examples.

Currently, linear models of various physical fields can successfully be implemented numerically. Efficient numerical methods have been developed during last two or three decades and sufficiently capable computers are available. The situation is different with nonlinear models. There is no general numerical method for solving all nonlinear problems, and consequently every class of problems has to be investigated individually. The specific features of the class are taken into account in this process [Berger].

An Interactive Multiple Objective Linear Programming Method for a Class of Underlying Nonlinear Utility Functions

This paper develops a method for interactive multiple objective linear programming assuming an unknown pseudo concave utility function satisfying certain general properties. The method is an extension of our earlier method published in this journal (Zionts, S., Wallenius, J. 1976. An interactive programming method for solving the multiple criteria problem. Management Sci. 22 (6) 652–663.). Various technical problems present in predecessor versions have been resolved. In addition to presenting the supporting theory and algorithm, we discuss certain options in implementation and summarize our practical experience with several versions of the method.

A Comparison of Special Bonding Techniques for Transmission and Distribution Cables under Normal and Fault Conditions

In this article, a review of the existing special bonding techniques for medium voltage and high-voltage cables is presented. Special bonding techniques have the purpose of reducing sheath currents, thereby limiting copper losses and the reduction of the ampacity of cables. The literature review shows various bonding techniques and how these have evolved over the years thanks to new technologies. Simulations of each technique are performed in MATLAB/Simulink, to compare their strengths and drawbacks both under normal conditions and in the presence of a single-line-to-ground fault.

Propagation pattern analysis during atrial fibrillation based on sparse modeling.

In this study, sparse modeling is introduced for the estimation of propagation patterns in intracardiac atrial fibrillation (AF) signals. The estimation is based on the partial directed coherence function, derived from fitting a multivariate autoregressive model to the observed signal using least-squares (LS) estimation. The propagation pattern analysis incorporates prior information on sparse coupling as well as the distance between the recording sites.
