Developing narrative identities in youth pre-elite sport : bridging the present and the future

2019

Narrative research has contributed to understandings of athletic identity as an evolving story of the self that is creatively put together by the agentic individual but necessarily dependent on broader narratives within which we all live our lives. However, most studies in sport have focused on retrospective ‘big stories’ of athletes’ lives, rather than on-going, future-oriented identity construction through storytelling. In this study, we explored Finnish pre-elite athletes’ emerging stories of the self to understand the processes associated with the narrative selection and the resources they tap into in making sport meaningful to them. Nine women and eight men aged 17–18 were invited to c…

Decision-cache based XACML authorisation and anonymisation for XML documents

2012

Author's version of an article in the journal: Computer Standards and Interfaces. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.csi.2011.10.007 This paper describes a decision cache for the eXtensible Access Control Markup Language (XACML) that supports fine-grained authorisation and anonymisation of XML based messages and documents down to XML attribute and element level. The decision cache is implemented as an XACML obligation service, where a specification of the XML elements to be authorised and anonymised is sent to the Policy Enforcement Point (PEP) during initial authorisation. Further authorisation of individual XML elements according to the authorisation specifi…

Connections Between Single-Level and Bilevel Multiobjective Optimization

2011

The relationship between bilevel optimization and multiobjective optimization has been studied by several authors and there have been repeated attempts to establish a link between the two. We unify the results from the literature and generalize them for bilevel multiobjective optimization. We formulate sufficient conditions for an arbitrary binary relation to guarantee equality between the efficient set produced by the relation and the set of optimal solutions to a bilevel problem. In addition, we present specially structured bilevel multiobjective optimization problems motivated by real-life applications and an accompanying binary relation permitting their reduction to single-level multiob…

Model transformation language MOLA

2005

The paper describes a new graphical model transformation language MOLA. The basic idea of MOLA is to merge traditional structured programming as a control structure with pattern-based transformation rules. The key language element is a graphical loop concept. The main goal of MOLA is to describe model transformations in a natural and easy readable way.

Artalbic acid, a sesquiterpene with an unusual skeleton from Artemisia alba (Asteraceae) from Sicily

2011

Abstract From the aerial parts of Artemisia alba (Asteraceae) artalbic acid ( 1 ), a sesquiterpene with an unusual skeleton, was isolated. Its structure was elucidated on the basis of extensive proton, 13 C and two-dimensional NMR experiments, as well as by transformation in its methyl ester derivative.

Whole-Genome Analyses

2014

Abstract Average nucleotide identity (ANI) was proposed almost 10 years ago as a means to compare genetic relatedness among prokaryotic strains. It was found that values around 95% corresponded to the 70% DNA–DNA hybridization cut-off value that is widely used to delineate archaeal and bacterial species. ANI calculations are one of the many aspects and approaches that can be derived from comparative genomic data and used for taxonomic purposes. Here, an overview about the impact and current usage of ANI values is given together with details of the existing user-friendly package tool, the biology-oriented software package JSpecies, which can be used to generate two types of ANI calculations …

Learning-based multiresolution transforms with application to image compression

2013

In Harten's framework, multiresolution transforms are defined by predicting finer resolution levels of information from coarser ones using an operator, called prediction operator, and defining details (or wavelet coefficients) that are the difference between the exact and predicted values. In this paper we use tools of statistical learning in order to design a more accurate prediction operator in this framework based on a training sample, resulting in multiresolution decompositions with enhanced sparsity. In the case of images, we incorporate edge detection techniques in the design of the prediction operator in order to avoid Gibbs phenomenon. Numerical tests are presented showing that the …

Earnings management of target firms and deal premiums: The role of industry relatedness

2022

This paper contributes to the merger and acquisitions (M&A) literature by providing evidence for the role of industry relatedness in the association between target firms' earnings management (EM) before the deal and the premium offered by the acquirer. We argue that familiarity with the industry's policies and practices is a crucial factor that helps acquirers to see through targets' EM. Our evidence supports this prediction in relation to accounting manipulation as we observe that the income increasing accrual manipulation of the target results in significantly higher premiums offered by acquirers in interindustry deals, which is not the case when targets and acquirers belong to the same i…
