Family and non-family businesses in iran:Coupling among innovation, internationalization and growth-expectation

2021

Gallo and Sveen, in 1991, specified problems of whether family businesses can take advantage of factors facilitating internationalization. We compare family and non-family businesses in innovation, export, and growth-expectation, and consider how outcomes are aligned, with a coupling that may be loose, with a synergy that benefits the business. This raises a further issue, is governance of a business affecting not only each of the outcomes but also their coupling. A representative sample of 530 Iranian businesses was surveyed in 2018 for Global Entrepreneurship Monitor. Innovation, export, and growth-expectation are found to be lower in family businesses. Coupling between innovation and exp…

Are Problems with Violence and the Lack of Public Safety a Barrier to Entrepreneurship?

2015

Scholars cite violence as a potential barrier to entrepreneurial activity in El Salvador. Using AHP, this research aims to rank the socioeconomic and political barriers to entrepreneurship in El Salvador. The analysis stresses the importance of citizen security as a barrier to entrepreneurial activity.

Ethical Entrepreneurship Training. Theoretical Reflection and Case Analysis

2014

Abstract In this paper we first reflect on the theoretical foundation of ethical entrepreneurship training in the field of economy. In this sense, we try to establish briefly the theoretical and historical assumptions of ethical entrepreneurship, especially from a review of the work of Adam Smith, professor of Moral Philosophy and central figure in the birth of the modern economy. We then present a definition of entrepreneurial activity, which is closely linked to a social and ethical dimension of economy and to the internal goods of economic activity. On the basis of these considerations, we propose some objectives of training for ethical entrepreneurship. Finally, we present a case study …

Effect of Integrating Photovoltaic Systems on Electrical Network Losses Considering Load Variation

2018

Planning of Distributed Generation (DG) units in the power distribution networks is an important issue, one of the most important considerations that is directly affected by installing DG units is the power losses. Improper allocation of DG units to the grid can lead to a noticeable increase in the power losses. Moreover, the load variation is considered as critical matter when studying the optimal scenario that minimizes the power losses in the network. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of integrating photovoltaic (PV) units on the distribution network losses considering load variation. The optimal parameters of the DG units were calculated for the various load demands in …

Standards not that standard

2015

There is a general assent on the key role of standards in Synthetic Biology. In two consecutive letters to this journal, suggestions on the assembly methods for the Registry of standard biological parts have been described. We fully agree with those authors on the need of a more flexible building strategy and we highlight in the present work two major functional challenges standardization efforts have to deal with: the need of both universal and orthogonal behaviors. We provide experimental data that clearly indicate that such engineering requirements should not be taken for granted in Synthetic Biology. A field methodology to study effects of UV radiation on fish larvae.

2003

There is a considerable lack of in situ specific information about the effects of UV-B radiation on limnic animals studied in the field. We exposed larval pike (Esox lucius L.) in two types of cuvettes (glass and quartz) placed at different depths (5 or 15 cm) to natural solar UV or to artificially enhanced UV-B (lamps on 3 h per day), simulating the scenarios for coming decades. Dose realism and comparability with earlier laboratory experiments was the main purpose, and therefore UV-B irradiances to the surface as well as underwater irradiances were directly measured. Result showed that UV-B dose rates in natural waters are low even though DOC concentration was low (4.8 mg/l) in our study …

Clinical and immunological aspects of microRNAs in neonatal sepsis

2022

Abstract Neonatal sepsis constitutes a highly relevant public health challenge and is the most common cause of infant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Recent studies have demonstrated that during infection epigenetic changes may occur leading to reprogramming of gene expression. Post-transcriptional regulation by short non-coding RNAs (e.g., microRNAs) have recently acquired special relevance because of their role in the regulation of the pathophysiology of sepsis and their potential clinical use as biomarkers. ~22-nucleotide of microRNAs are not only involved in regulating multiple relevant cellular and molecular functions, such as immune cell function and inflammatory response, but have…

Developmental programming of adult haematopoiesis system

2019

The Barker hypothesis of ‘foetal origin of adult diseases’ has led to emphasize the concept of ‘developmental programming’, based on the crucial role of epigenetic factors. Accordingly, it has been demonstrated that parental adversity (before conception and during pregnancy) and foetal factors (i.e., hypoxia, malnutrition and placental insufficiency) permanently modify the physiological systems of the progeny, predisposing them to premature ageing and chronic disease during adulthood. Thus, an altered functionality of the endocrine, immune, nervous and cardiovascular systems is observed in the progeny. However, it remains to be understood whether the haematopoietic system itself also repres…
