New method of grain-boundary extraction by directional optimal filtering: application to estimating creep in metals

2002

It is economically important for manufacturers of high- temperature machines to be able to measure creep so they can predict residual service life more accurately. This paper describes and refines an image analysis method for evaluating creep in laboratory test pieces. It is a preliminary study of how to extract relevant information for creep mea- surement by counting cavities. Sample preparation for quantification by image analysis is an important step determining the further development of the image analysis technique. Grain-boundary extraction, which in- volves directional information, is the major problem to be solved before measurement can be automated. The search for a crest-line extr…

Towards the integration and development of a cross-European research netwerk and infrastructure : the DEterminants of Diet and Physical ACtivity (DED…

2014

To address major societal challenges and enhance cooperation in research across Europe, the European Commission has initiated and facilitated ‘joint programming’. Joint programming is a process by which Member States engage in defining, developing and implementing a common strategic research agenda, based on a shared vision of how to address major societal challenges that no Member State is capable of resolving independently. Setting up a Joint Programming Initiative (JPI) should also contribute to avoiding unnecessary overlap and repetition of research, and enable and enhance the development and use of standardised research methods, procedures and data management. The Determinants of Diet …

Impact of hydrothermal ageing on the thermal stability, morphology and viscoelastic performance of PLA/sisal biocomposites

2016

The influence of the combined exposure to water and temperature on the behaviour of polylactide/sisal biocomposites coupled with maleic acid anhydride was assessed through accelerated hydrothermal ageing. The biocomposites were immersed in water at temperatures from 65 to 85 °C, between the glass transition and cold crystallisation of the PLA matrix. The results showed that the most influent factor for water absorption was the percentage of fibres, followed by the presence of coupling agent, whereas the effect of the temperature was not significant. Deep assessment was devoted to biocomposites subjected to hydrothermal ageing at 85 °C, since it represents the extreme degrading condition. Th…

Tribological properties of commercial optical disks estimated from nanoindentation and scratch techniques

2007

Abstract The structure of optical disks is a complex superposition of several layers with different objectives. The most external layer is usually designed with a protective purpose. When the scratch of the substrate occurs, the optical properties of the device decrease inducing a deficiency in the storage or access of data. Nowadays, the latest commercial optical disks exhibit protective coatings made of polymeric materials (copolymers, and polymeric matrix composite materials). The efficiency of these layers depends on a combination of several mechanical properties like hardness and Young's modulus. In this work, a compositional and mechanical study was carried out on four commercial opti…

Computational Study of Association of Dihydroxybenzoic Acids in Solution: Testing the Molecular Self-Association Computational Methodology for Format…

2020

Already validated methodology for self-association in solutions were used to evaluate if this method could also be used in other studies regarding association in solution. Three isomeric dihydroxybenzoic acids were used to calculate Gibbs free energies of association for homodimers, heterotetramers and associates with solvent molecules by using DFT calculations in multiple environments and having different conformations.

The Peer Observation: “Mentore” Project at University of Palermo

2019

During the last 6 years at the University of Palermo, a group of academics has been involved in a project called “MENTORE” (“Modifying and ENhancing Teaching through peer Observation and Reflections with Experts.”) The objectives of the project are to help teachers improve their teaching, through the help of two mentors; to experiment new approaches in pilot courses to extend, if useful, to other ones; and to change the traditional model of academic teaching based on one single teacher with the class to go toward a model where there is a group of teachers working together in search of improvements. All the participants of the MENTORE project attend to lectures/workshops on teaching and lear…

Need for study and career counselling in computer science

2009

High drop-out rates among undergraduate students of Computer Science (CS) can be explained by low study motivation. One way to increase students' motivation is to support their professional orientation and identity by various study and career counselling methods. A survey of Finnish CS students' awareness of their career choices and evaluation of undergraduate courses from the viewpoint of professional benefit, as well as an analysis of a group counselling module organized for first-year students, indicate that CS education can be improved not only by intensifying the professional aspects of individual courses, but also by including study and career counselling modules as integrating compon…
