Cloud Infrastructure for Skin Cancer Scalable Detection System

2018

Skin cancer diagnostics is one of the medical areas where early diagnostic allows achieving patients’ high survival rate. Typically, skin cancer diagnostic is performed by dermatologist, since the amount of such specialists is limited, mortality rate is high [1]. By creating the low cost and easy to use diagnostic device, it is possible to bring skin cancer diagnostic to primary care physicians and allow to check much more persons and diagnose skin cancer on the early stages. There are several existing devices, that provide skin cancer diagnostics [2]. Most of them process the skin images locally and have limited diagnostic capabilities; some of them send images to dermatologists for manual…

Was King Arthur a King by Definition?

1988

Current research in knowledge representation distinguishes between descriptional and assertional interpretations of semantic nets. This paper explores theoretical and applicative problems, which arise from that distinction in a historic domain. A prolog implementation of KL-ONE is used as a vehicle to compare the various alternatives available to represent knowledge related to single elements of the domain insertion or not of this knowledge in semantic nets in their descriptional sense. The final section of the paper discusses the problem in relation to the theories concerning the functioning of proper names from a logical and philosophical point of view.

Economic and Technical Efficiency of Drinking Water Systems: An Empirical Approach for Spain

2009

The objective of this paper is to analyze the efficiency of drinking water systems. Efficient performance, both in technical and economic terms guarantee minimum water losses in the network and reduced tariffs for the users. An analytical benchmarking methodology based on non-radial measures considering water losses as undesirable output gives us an efficiency indicator for each input used in the water supply process. These indicators, obtained by means of mathematical programming techniques, are used to rank suppliers' activity. The relation between the efficiency in the activity of the companies and the establishment of different tariffs is also analyzed. An empirical application is carry…

‘We Don’t Differentiate between Old and New Arrivals’. Research Notes on Social Capital Formation in Religious Organizations among Polish Young Migra…

2017

With more than half a million Poles living in the UK, Polish Catholic Church has become an important provider for religious and social services in the UK. In this context, a plethora of religious organizations has been developing around the Polish Parishes especially focusing on youth. Drawing on 12 participant observations and semi-structured interviews with priest, association leaders and Polish youth, this paper asks how social capital is created within religious association by the Polish youth living in the UK. The research identifies 3 types of religious organizations operating in the religious communities and which are the main types of social networks that are formed within these rel…

Advances in the Retrieval and Interpretation of Solar-Induced Vegetation Chlorophyll Fluorescence Using Passive Remote Sensing Techniques

2021

In the context of the development and implementation of the Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX) mission, selected in 2015 by the European Space Agency (ESA) as the 8th Earth Explorer, many recent developments in the field of vegetation chlorophyll fluorescence have taken place in the last years. These advances include new retrieval approaches, more accurate and robust, and a much better understanding of the variability of the signal, facilitating the interpretation of the dynamical changes and the usage of the fluorescence signal in Earth models and applications. Although chlorophyll fluorescence is related to the actual photosynthetic activity of the plants, the link between fluorescence and phot…

Fuel cell modelling and test: Experimental validation of model accuracy

2013

In the last few years, renewable energies have been encouraged by worldwide governments to meet energy saving policies. Among renewable energy sources, fuel cells have attracted much interest for a wide variety of research areas. Fuel cell-based residential-scaled power supply systems take advantage of simultaneous generation of power and heat, reducing the overall fossil fuel consumption and utilities cost. Modeling is one of the most important topics concerning fuel cell use. In this paper, a measurement-based steady-state and dynamic fuel cell model is presented. The proposed modelling approach is implemented on a 5kW Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell. The parameters identification proc…

MATLAB-based simulator of a 5 kW fuel cell for power electronics design

2013

Abstract In the last few years, renewable energies have been encouraged by worldwide governments to meet energy saving policies. Among renewable energy sources, fuel cells have attracted much interest for a wide variety of research areas. Since combined heat-power generation is allowed, household appliances are still the most promising applications. Fuel cell-based residential-scaled power supply systems take advantage by simultaneous generation of power and heat, reducing the overall fossil fuel consumption and utilities cost. Modelling is one of the most important topic concerning fuel cell use. In this paper, a measurement-based steady-state and dynamic fuel cell model is presented. The …

Can planning be a research paradigm in architectural design?

1991

Abstract In the present paper we discuss the possible use of ‘planning’ ° to support architectural design. Architectural design is conceived as a process incorporating non-trivial subprocesses consisting of evolutionary sequences of drawings. The ‘planner’ can be viewed as a tool capable of managing the automatic development of formal descriptions of architectural objects, according to goals and constraints which are interactively assigned or removed by the designer. The main features of a ‘planner’ dedicated to architectural design are then put forward. The system has been implemented at the University of Ancona, Italy.

Expert appraisal of criteria for assessing gaming disorder: An international Delphi study

2021

Background and aims Following the recognition of ‘internet gaming disorder’ (IGD) as a condition requiring further study by the DSM‐5, ‘gaming disorder’ (GD) was officially included as a diagnostic entity by the World Health Organization (WHO) in the eleventh revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD‐11). However, the proposed diagnostic criteria for gaming disorder remain the subject of debate, and there has been no systematic attempt to integrate the views of different groups of experts. To achieve a more systematic agreement on this new disorder, this study employed the Delphi expert consensus method to obtain expert agreement on the diagnostic validity, clinical util…

Writing to Learn Programming? : A Single Case Pilot Study

2016

This paper explores the use of writing-to-learn techniques in the context of programming education. It presents a pilot study where a writing assignment is introduced with the purpose of strengthening students' conceptual understanding of a programming construct. The intervention is evaluated using a single case research design, which is augmented by qualitative interview data. Students participating in the study were mildly positive towards the intervention and the results encourage more work on the topic. This work sets directions for further investigations into how writing-to-learn can strengthen programming education and contributes with insights into what kinds of results can be obtain…
