An Empirical Set of Metrics for Embedded Systems Testing

2018

Editor’s note: Selecting the right platform for an embedded system is a challenging task, because there are no systematic methodologies for comprehensive evaluation and comparison of competing alternatives. This article partially addresses this problem by formulating a set of relevant metrics and an evaluation methodology. By applying their concepts to the evaluation of two alternative platforms, the Raspberry Pi3 and the Intel Edison boards, the authors demonstrate the utility of their approach and show under which objectives one is preferable over the other. —Axel Jantsch, TU Wien

Automated quality control of next generation sequencing data using machine learning

2019

AbstractControlling quality of next generation sequencing (NGS) data files is a necessary but complex task. To address this problem, we statistically characterized common NGS quality features and developed a novel quality control procedure involving tree-based and deep learning classification algorithms. Predictive models, validated on internal data and external disease diagnostic datasets, are to some extent generalizable to data from unseen species. The derived statistical guidelines and predictive models represent a valuable resource for users of NGS data to better understand quality issues and perform automatic quality control. Our guidelines and software are available at the following …

Using System Dynamics to Model Student Performance in an Intelligent Tutoring System

2017

One basic adaptation function of an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) consists of selecting the most appropriate next task to be offered to the learner. This decision can be based on estimates, such as the expected performance of the student, or the probability that the student successfully solves each particular task. However, the computation of these values is intrinsically difficult, as they may depend on other complex latent variables that also need to be estimated from observable quantities, e.g. the current student's ability. In this work, we have used system dynamics to model learning and predict the student's performance in a given exercise, in an existing ITS that was developed to …

TuinLEC, an intelligent tutoring system to improve reading literacy skills / TuinLEC, un tutor inteligente para mejorar la competencia lectora

2014

AbstractThis study describes an intelligent tutoring system to improve reading literacy skills called TuinLEC and it presents the results of its application to a group of sixth grade students. TuinLEC adopts the reading literacy theoretical framework of PISA (Program for International Students Assessment, OECD, 2009). TuinLEC includes eight lessons distributed in two phases, one for modeling and guided practice, and the second for independent practice. TuinLEC interacts with every student and it provides help and feedback for the task in a game-like environment. Half of the students were taught with TuinLEC, whereas the other half served as the control group. Children in both groups were pa…

Quality based classification of gasoline samples by ATR-FTIR spectrometry using spectral feature selection with quadratic discriminant analysis

2013

Abstract A chemometric approach has been developed for characterization of gasoline samples regarding their quality. Attenuated total reflectance – infrared spectrometric data were processed by genetic algorithm (GA) and successive projection algorithm (SPA) feature selection techniques, being employed as an initial step prior to apply a discriminative tool. It was aimed to classify the fuel samples according to their quality passed/failed data. Chemometric predictive procedures were developed using quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA) combined with GA and SPA as a feature subset and feature selection strategy. Results showed 93.3% and 95.6% accuracy for SPA-QDA and GA-QDA models respectiv…

How Social Media Affect Youth Civic Participation in China

2021

This study is focused on social media in China and its influence on youth civic participation. In China, a trend of increasing usage of social media platforms has been observed, in particularly WeChat, Weibo, QQ, Douyin, and Meitu. The aim of this research is to explore the link between the use of these social media platforms and civic participation among the youth in China, specifically, whether social media platforms have positive effect on encouragement of youth civic participation. The use of social media platforms is measured by the number of social media accounts, the duration of usage of these accounts, and the average time spending on social media accounts weekly, while civic partic…

A generalizability measure for program synthesis with genetic programming

2021

The generalizability of programs synthesized by genetic programming (GP) to unseen test cases is one of the main challenges of GP-based program synthesis. Recent work showed that increasing the amount of training data improves the generalizability of the programs synthesized by GP. However, generating training data is usually an expensive task as the output value for every training case must be calculated manually by the user. Therefore, this work suggests an approximation of the expected generalization ability of solution candidates found by GP. To obtain candidate solutions that all solve the training cases, but are structurally different, a GP run is not stopped after the first solution …

Number transcoding in children: A functional analysis

1994

French-speaking second-grade children from France and Wallonia were asked to write down in the Arabic code, numbers orally presented at six successive one-month-spaced sessions. The evolution of the children's production (patterns of correct responses and errors) is analysed and tentatively interpreted through the model of number and calculation processing developed by McCloskey in adult neuropsychology. In order to evaluate their number production and comprehension mechanisms the children were furthermore submitted to other number processing tasks. It is tentatively concluded that the children's difficulties in the Arabic written task were localized at the level of the production of the Ar…

The term structure of volatility predictability

2020

Volatility forecasting is crucial for portfolio management, risk management, and pricing of derivative securities. Still, little is known about the accuracy of volatility forecasts and the horizon of volatility predictability. This paper aims to fill these gaps in the literature. We begin this paper by introducing the notions of the spot and forward predicted volatilities and propose to describe the term structure of volatility predictability by the spot and forward forecast accuracy curves. Then we perform a comprehensive study on the term structure of volatility predictability in the stock and foreign exchange markets. Our results quantify the volatility forecast accuracy across horizons …
