Il difficoltoso percorso del Piano paesaggistico siciliano
2020
Groupware architecture for requirements processes in new product development
1999
An organization's ability to create successful products depends on how extensively it collects, analyzes and utilizes requirements information in its product development. Recent advances in groupware technologies allow such information to be shared more effectively in distributed organizations; thus, these technologies hold considerable potential as means of shortening the cycle time and improving the quality of requirements processes. This paper addresses issues in the design and implementation of groupware-supported requirements processes by drawing on experiences from large-scale industrial development projects within Nokia. The primary contribution of the paper is the conceptual design …
How Citizen Scientists Learn: Exploring Learning Perceptions Through an International Survey
2023
Citizen science (CS) is a growing field of participatory science, bringing together the public, researchers, organizations, and communities to participate in various scientific projects that unfold in different sociomaterial settings known as territories. While research on perceived learning in CS has recently grown, the discussion regarding the different learning approaches, territories, and the overall process as well as their associations with learning factors remains meager. In our study, we unpack three types of learning (formal, informal, and nonformal) and their respective territories in CS, and within this context, review a model of learning to synthesize the project-related and ind…
Analysis of Somatosensory Cortical Responses to Different Electrotactile Stimulations as a Method Towards an Objective Definition of Artificial Senso…
2022
Sensory feedback is a critical component in many human-machine interfaces (e.g., bionic limbs) to provide missing sensations. Specifically, electrotactile stimulation is a popular feedback modality able to evoke configurable sensations by modulating pulse amplitude, duration, and frequency of the applied stimuli. However, these sensations coded by electrotactile parameters are thus far predominantly determined by subjective user reports, which leads to heterogeneous and unstable feedback delivery. Thus, a more objective understanding of the impact that different stimulation parameters induce in the brain, is needed. Analysis of cortical responses to electrotactile afference might be an effe…
Social media use to improve communication on children and adolescent’s health: the role of the Italian Paediatric Society influencers
2021
Abstract Background Fake news on children’s and adolescent health are spreading. Internet availability and decreasing costs of media devices are contributing to an easy access to technology by families. Public health organizations are working to contrast misinformation and promote scientific communication. In this context, a new form of communication is emerging social media influencers. Aim of this study is to evaluate the role of paediatric influencers (PI) in communicating information about children and adolescents’ health. Materials and methods A group of PI was enrolled from December 2019 to January 2020 by a scientific commission nominated by the Italian Paediatric Society (SIP). PI w…
Neprilysin inhibition, endorphin dynamics, and early symptomatic improvement in heart failure: a pilot study
2020
Altres ajuts: This work was supported in part by Fundació La Marató de TV3 (201516-10, 201502-30), Societat Catalana de Cardiologia, "la Caixa" Banking Foundation. Altres ajuts: PERIS/SLT002-16-00234 Sacubitril/valsartan is a first-in-class angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitor developed for the treatment of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. Its benefits are achieved through the inhibition of neprilysin (NEP) and the specific blockade of the angiotensin receptor AT1. The many peptides metabolized by NEP suggest multifaceted potential consequences of its inhibition. We sought to evaluate the short-term changes in serum endorphin (EP) values and their relation with patients' p…
Food as medicine in psychiatric care: Which profession should be responsible for imparting knowledge and use of omega-3 fatty acids in psychiatry
2011
Accepted version of an article in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice, 17 (2011), 107-112. Also available from the publisher: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.ctcp.2010.08.001 The effect of omega-3 fatty acids on depression is well documented. The purpose of this study was to determine if and how food is used as medicine in psychiatric care, especially how omega-3 fatty acids are used as a supplement in the treatment of depression. This is a pilot study with a qualitative design using questionnaires and interviews among nursing students, tutor nurses and psychiatrists. Three main categories emerged: 1. Nutrition is considered important but few evaluations are made. 2. There was a lack o…
Simulation for training in sinus floor elevation: new surgical bench model
2011
Objectives: to describe a bench model (workshop of abilities) for sinus floor elevation (SFE) training that simulates the surgical environment and to assess its effectiveness in terms of trainees’ perception. Study design: thirty-six randomly selected postgraduate students entered this cross-sectional pilot study and asked to fill in an anonymous, self-applied, 12-item questionnaire about a SFE workshop that included a study guide containing the workshop’s details, supervised practice on a simulated surgical environment, and assessment by means of specific check-lists. Results: Thirtiy-six fresh sheep heads were prepared to allow access to the buccal vestible. Using the facial tuber, third …
Is cell salvage safe in liver resection? A pilot study
2007
Abstract Study Objective To investigate the quality of cell salvaged (CS) blood in patients undergoing hemihepatectomy (study group) and compare it with CS-blood from aortic surgery (control group). Design Observational study. Setting Operating room in a university hospital. Measurements 6 patients undergoing hemihepatectomy or aortobifemoral bypass with intraoperative blood loss of more than 800 mL. Samples were drawn from the central venous catheter, from the reservoir of a CS recovery system, and from the processed blood in each patient to determine interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor (TNF), complement C3a, and the terminal complement complex C5b-9. Microbiological ana…
