Function Words Constrain On-Line Recognition of Verbs and Nouns in French 18-Month-Olds

2013

In this experiment using the conditioned head-turn procedure, 18-month-old French-learning toddlers were trained to respond to either a target noun (“la balle”/the ball) or a target verb (“je mange”/I eat). They were then tested on target word recognition in two syntactic contexts: the target word was preceded either by a correct function word (“une balle”/a ball or “on mange”/they eat), or by an incorrect function word, signaling a word from the other category (*“on balle”/they ball or *“une mange”/a eat). We showed that 18-month-olds exploit the syntactic context on-line to recognize the target word: verbs were recognized when preceded by a personal pronoun but not when preceded by a dete…

2016

This is a detailed study of the film adaptations of three prose works by Giorgio Bassani that have been made for the commercial cinema during three decades: La lunga notte del ’43 (1960), Il giardino dei Finzi Contini (1970) and Gli occhiali d’oro (1987). The analysis of the films is centred principally on the respective directors (Florestano Vancini, Vittorio De Sica, Giuliano Montaldo), the scripts, actors, technical visual aspects and scores, but it is above all a comparison between the three films and the narratives on which they are based, in which use is made of the statements and recorded opinions of Bassani himself. The three films are all very different from one another. Attention …

”Man vill gärna berätta”

2013

The Unnatural Naturalness of Man-Narration and Daniel Sjolin’s Autobiographical Oron Bror Daniel Sjolin’s autobiographical debut novel Oron bror (2002) is about two brothers who are searching for their childhood home. During the journey, the little brother, the I-narrator, recalls detailed episodes from his past. In these retrospective chapters, narrated in present tense, the protagonist is referred to by the indefinite pronoun man. The article focuses on this peculiar narrative feature of Sjolin’s novel. Firstly, the article examines the functions of man in autobiographical context. The analysis of Sjolin’s novel shows that, on the one hand, man functions quite similarly to the more conven…

The Novel as Third Space in the Struggle for One’s Own Place: Witold Gombrowicz’s Hidden Polemic with German Literature in „Pornografia”

2020

This paper deals with Gombrowicz’s novel „Pornografia” which can be interpreted as a third space where different literary discourses and philosophical concepts are interwoven. In this respect two German authors deserve special attention: Thomas Mann and Friedrich Nietzsche. It is the aim of this article to show to what extent Gombrowicz refers to the writings of these two authors in his attempt to establish himself as an important writer during his exile in Argentina. The novel „Pornografia” works in this respect as a sphere of interferences and a space of emerging hybridity, where Gombrowicz creates a special textuality consisting of hidden references to and even polemic with both Mann and…

Who do you refer to? How young students with mild intellectual disability confront anaphoric ambiguities in texts and sentences.

2015

Along 2 experiments we tested the anaphoric pronoun resolution abilities of readers with intellectual disability in comparison with chronological and reading age-matched groups. In Experiment 1, the anaphor test of Elosua, Carriedo, and Garcia-Madruga (2009) confirmed that readers with intellectual disability (ID) are slower than control readers resolving clitic anaphoric pronouns, especially when the use of morphological cues (e.g. gender) is necessary. In order to test if the poor performance could be due to low levels of metacognitive skills during reading, an inconsistency detection task combined with eye tracking was designed in Experiment 2. Participants read short texts with an anaph…

Prepositions and pronouns in connected discourse of individuals with aphasia

2018

The lexical-grammatical divide has been a widely addressed topic in aphasia. Speech parts are generally classified as either belonging to a lexical or a grammatical category based on the frequency of acquisition of new members in their paradigms (open vs. closed classes), thus neglecting heterogeneity within categories. Such an approach has led to contradictory findings. First, prepositions form closed classes, but are classically taken as lexical items. Pronouns, also belonging to a closed class, are analyzed as grammatical elements. Second, both within the group of prepositions and pronouns, forms with different syntactic and semantic properties co-exist. Following the theoretical notions…

The equative sentence in Finnish Sign Language

2007

It is argued in this paper that equative sentences in Finnish Sign Language (FinSL) conform to the general schema of (NP) NP+(PI+)NP, parenthesis marking optionality of elements. With respect to this schema, it is further argued, (a) that the function of the first NP in equative sentences is always topic; (b) that topics are marked syntactically, prosodically, and morphologically in FinSL; (c) that the preferred organisation of equative sentences in general is topic-comment; (d) that there are two structurally distinct topic-comment structures in FinSL, one having the topic at the beginning of the clause and the other having the topic in the left-detached clause-external position; (e) that …

Two Types of pseudo-clefts?

2010

Sentences such as 'What Fred does is complain' and 'What Fred does is important' have both been labeled as pseudo-clefts, though of two distinct types. We provide four tests to structurally distinguish such constructions. Entailment patterns and a number of structural ties between the post-copular constituent and specific constituents of the pre-copular relative clause suggest using the label ‘pseudo-cleft’ for the former type only. This paper also examines certain cases of pseudo-clefts with no simple correlates, and vice versa, to argue – contra Higgins 1973 – that these do not necessarily contradict the existence of a structural connection (a transformation, in the sense of Z. S. Harris)…
