Identification of Russian accented Finnish by native and non-native listeners with and without Finnish proficiency
2018

The study focuses on how different groups of listeners, that is native Finnish speakers (n = 18), non-native learners of Finnish (n = 12) and non-native non-learners of Finnish (n = 18), judge samples (n = 80) of Russian accented Finnish in an auditory experiment. The samples are read-aloud phrases of three Finnish speakers and three L1 Russian beginner learners of Finnish who were recorded three times at six-month intervals during their residence in Finland. The results show that the listener groups differ significantly from each other in the ability to identify the Russian accented samples. In addition, all the listener groups reported to have paid more attention to p…
La entonación del español hablado por italianos
2011
2016
Swedish has two tone accents, accents 1 and 2. There are approximately 350 minimal pairs such as ánd-en (duck) and ànde-n (spirit) differentiated only by tone accent. As all stressed words in Swedish have a tone accent, tones are important for achieving nativelike pronunciation. However, this is a challenging task for L2 speakers. In Swedish, the tone accents are potentially difficult both acoustically (cf. phonetic realization) and lexically (cf. morphological distribution). The present study focuses on the learning of Central Swedish tones by advanced L2 speakers with Finnish as their L1 (n = 10). The aim is to reveal if the learning of tones is a realistic goal for advanced adult learner…

The Interplay between Musical and Linguistic Aptitudes: A Review.
2011
According to prevailing views, brain organization is modulated by practice, e.g., during musical or linguistic training. Most recent results, using both neuropsychological tests and brain measures, revealed an intriguing connection between musical aptitude and second language linguistic abilities. A significant relationship between higher musical aptitude, better second language pronunciation skills, accurate chord discrimination ability, and more prominent sound-change-evoked brain activation in response to musical stimuli was found. Moreover, regular music practice may also have a modulatory effect on the brain’s linguistic organization and alter hemispheric functioning in those who have …
L1 listeners’ perception of L2 pronunciation: effect of prosody on accentedness ratings in Swedish
2018

This paper reports on a study in which L1 speakers (n = 53) of Swedish rated the accentedness of read-aloud sentences produced by L2 speakers (n = 6) of Swedish. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of certain prosodic features on the accentedness ratings. These features include Swedish tone accents and and deviant speech rhythm (e.g. lack of primary stress, and realization of multiple stresses). The results reveal that utterances with deviant speech rhythm yielded perceptions of stronger foreign accent than utterances with target-like rhythm. As for the tone accents, their effect on the scores were non-existent or only marginal. As missing tone accents ha…
Oral competence in upper secondary school teaching : teachers and students' views
2013
Pronunciation teaching in a Finnish secondary school : a case study
2016
2018
Learning a foreign language means being in contact with a new environment of sounds compared to that of the mother tongue. The foreign language teacher must help learners to access these sounds both from a perception and a production point of view. The verbo-tonal method of phonetic correction designed in the 1960s-1970s by Professor Petar Guberina (University of Zagreb) provides teachers with tools to correct learners’ pronunciation. The aim of this article is to present some of the advantages of the VTM for phonetic correction, in particular with regard to prosody by showing how important this is for effective communication. This comes in response to difficulties noted by Polish-speaking …
Sztuka dopełnienia. O recytacjach poematu Fortepian Szopena Cypriana Norwida
2016
