Semiclassical Methods for the Description of Large Metal Clusters

1996

One of the most fascinating aspects of clusters is that they can be made arbitrarily large and therefore provide links between the microscopic and the macroscopic world. It is challenging to study how their physical properties change when going from atoms and small molecules to the bulk limit of condensed matter. But also the models and mathematical tools themselves, which are used in order to tackle the many-body problem, are an object of study for the theoretician. In particular, the question of how far quantum-mechanics must be carried with increasing size and where classical pictures become appropriate is of great interest. In this spirit, we discuss here some semiclassical methods for …

From pedologic indications to archaeological reconstruction: deciphering land use in the Islamic period in the Baida district (north-western Sicily)

2013

Abstract The aim of this work was to detect imprints on soil properties from former Islamic land use (9th to 11th century) using a multi-method, soil-chemical approach. Four soil profiles (with buried horizons) found in the vicinities of former Islamic settlements in Sicily were analysed for phosphorus (total, organic and inorganic), nitrogen (total, NO 3 − and NH 4 + ), carbon compounds (δ 13 C, lipids, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and functional groups), physical and chemical C-fractions and the state of soil weathering. Two soil profiles contained ceramic sherds from the Islamic period. Inorganic nitrogen forms, phosphorous and the PAH content indicated strong impacts from trad…

An innovative approach to manage uncertainties and stock diversity in the EPBD cost-optimal methodology

2018

The EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) 2010/31/EU is a step in the right direction to promote near zero energy buildings (NZEB) in a step-wise manner, starting with minimum energy performance and cost optimal thresholds for “reference buildings” (RBs) for each category. Nevertheless, a standard method for defining RBs does not exist, which led to a great divergence between MS in the level of detail used to define RBs for the EPBD cost-optimal analysis. Such lack of harmonisation between MS is further evident given the resulting large discrepancies in energy performance indicators even between countries having similar climate. Furthermore, discrepancies of 30% or higher betw…

Impact of recent climate change in the Arctic on snow physical parameters retrieval using SAR data (Svalbard)

2019

International audience; Arctic snow cover dynamics exhibit strong changes in terms of extent and duration due to recent climate changeconditions (Mudryk et al., 2018; Lemke & Jacobi, 2011). In this context, innovative observation methods arehelpful for a better comprehension of the role of the snow for climate research and hydrology. The spatialvariability of snow properties is here addressed for the Ny-Ålesund area, Svalbard (N 78◦55’ / E 11◦55’) usingsatellite radar images in the X-band. This remote sensing method removes the limitations and ambiguities ofoptical imaging limited by the polar night and cloud cover. This study contributes to the “Precip-A2” project (OSUG@2020, Grenoble, Fran…

Fuzzy tuning systems: the mathematics of musicians

2005

We present some mathematical properties which determine tuning methods. We introduce the concept of fuzzy tuning systems and we analyze four of the systems coexisting within the current orchestras: Pythagorean, Just Intonation, Holder's and Equal Temperament systems. We show that the theoretical and practical tuning methods are the same. We introduce the idea of compatibility between tuning systems and we give some sufficient conditions to determine an appropriate number of notes into which the octave must be divided.

A Cluster Analysis of Stock Market Data Using Hierarchical SOMs

2016

The analysis of stock markets has become relevant mainly because of its financial implications. In this paper, we propose a novel methodology for performing a structured cluster analysis of stock market data. Our proposed method uses a tree-based neural network called the TTOSOM. The TTOSOM performs self-organization to construct tree-based clusters of vector data in the multi-dimensional space. The resultant tree possesses interesting mathematical properties such as a succinct representation of the original data distribution, and a preservation of the underlying topology. In order to demonstrate the capabilities of our method, we analyze 206 assets of the Italian stock market. We were able…

Top management team demography and firm operating performance: a path analysis

2020

PurposeThis paper examined the relationship between TMT demographic properties and firm performance using diversity and level variables and measuring differing constructs of firm performance representing divergent strategies.Design/methodology/approachStructural equation modelling was used to test the relationships between TMT demographic properties and firm performance measured as return on net operating assets (RNOA), and its disaggregates profit margin (PM) and asset turnover (ATO). Data were from 89 Finnish firms during the years 2008–2011, resulting in 320 observations.FindingsTMT team tenure had associations with RNOA through both PM and ATO while TMT age, age diversity, firm tenure, …

Cosmological bounds on neutrino statistics

2018

We consider the phenomenological implications of the violation of the Pauli exclusion principle for neutrinos, focusing on cosmological observables such as the spectrum of Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations and the primordial abundances of light elements. Neutrinos that behave (at least partly) as bosonic particles have a modified equilibrium distribution function that implies a different influence on the evolution of the Universe that, in the case of massive neutrinos, can not be simply parametrized by a change in the effective number of neutrinos. Our results show that, despite the precision of the available cosmological data, only very weak bounds can …

Non-linear evolution of the cosmic neutrino background

2012

We investigate the non-linear evolution of the relic cosmic neutrino background by running large box-size, high resolution N-body simulations which incorporate cold dark matter (CDM) and neutrinos as independent particle species. Our set of simulations explore the properties of neutrinos in a reference Lambda CDM model with total neutrino masses between 0.05-0.60 eV in cold dark matter haloes of mass 10(11) – 10(15) h(-1) M-circle dot, over a redshift range z = 0 – 2. We compute the halo mass function and show that it is reasonably well fitted by the Sheth-Tormen formula, once the neutrino contribution to the total matter is removed. More importantly, we focus on the CDM and neutrino proper…

Sterile Neutrinos in Light of Recent Cosmological and Oscillation Data: a Multi-Flavor Scheme Approach

2008

Light sterile neutrinos might mix with the active ones and be copiously produced in the early Universe. In the present paper, a detailed multi-flavor analysis of sterile neutrino production is performed. Making some justified approximations allows us to consider not only neutrino interactions with the primeval medium and neutrino coherence breaking effects, but also oscillation effects arising from the presence of three light (mostly-active) neutrino states mixed with two heavier (mostly-sterile) states. First, we emphasize the underlying physics via an analytical description of sterile neutrino abundances that is valid for cases with small mixing between active and sterile neutrinos. Then,…
