Why Cortices ? Neural Computation in the Vertebrate Visual System
1989
We propose three high level structural principles of neural networks in the vertebrate visual cortex and discuss some of their computational implications for early vision: a) Lamination, average axonal and dendritic domains, and intrinsic feedback determine the spatio-temporal interactions in cortical processing. Possible applications of the resulting filters include continuous motion perception and the direct measurement of high-level parameters of image flow, b) Retinotopic mapping is an emergent property of massively parallel connections. With a local intrinsic operation in the target area, mapping combines to a space-variant image processing system as would be useful in the analysis of …
Combining a context aware neural network with a denoising autoencoder for measuring string similarities
2020
Abstract Measuring similarities between strings is central for many established and fast-growing research areas, including information retrieval, biology, and natural-language processing. The traditional approach to string similarity measurements is to define a metric with respect to a word space that quantifies and sums up the differences between characters in two strings; surprisingly, these metrics have not evolved a great deal over the past few decades. Indeed, the majority of them are still based on making a simple comparison between character and character distributions without considering the words context. This paper proposes a string metric that encompasses similarities between str…
Origin of atmospheric aerosols at the Pierre Auger Observatory using studies of air mass trajectories in South America
2014
The Pierre Auger Observatory is making significant contributions towards understanding the nature and origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. One of its main challenges is the monitoring of the atmosphere, both in terms of its state variables and its optical properties. The aim of this work is to analyze aerosol optical depth $\tau_{\rm a}(z)$ values measured from 2004 to 2012 at the observatory, which is located in a remote and relatively unstudied area of the Pampa Amarilla, Argentina. The aerosol optical depth is in average quite low - annual mean $\tau_{\rm a}(3.5~{\rm km})\sim 0.04$ - and shows a seasonal trend with a winter minimum - $\tau_{\rm a}(3.5~{\rm km})\sim 0.03$ -, and a sum…
A New Look at Homogeneous Ice Nucleation in Supercooled Water Drops
1995
Abstract The classical theory for homogeneous ice nucleation in supercooled water is investigated in the light of recent data published in various physico-chemical journal on the physical properties of supercooled water and in the light of recent evidence that the cooperative nature of the hydrogen bonds between water molecules is responsible for a singularity behavior of pure supercooled water at −45°C. Recent rates for homogeneous ice nucleation in supercooled water drops field from field experiments at the cirrus cloud level and from cloud chamber studies were shown to be quantitatively in agreement with the laboratory-derived lowest temperatures to which ultrapure water drops of a given…
Categorization of Extremely Brief Auditory Stimuli: Domain-Specific or Domain-General Processes?
2011
The present study investigated the minimum amount of auditory stimulation that allows differentiation of spoken voices, instrumental music, and environmental sounds. Three new findings were reported. 1) All stimuli were categorized above chance level with 50 ms-segments. 2) When a peak-level normalization was applied, music and voices started to be accurately categorized with 20 ms-segments. When the root-mean-square (RMS) energy of the stimuli was equalized, voice stimuli were better recognized than music and environmental sounds. 3) Further psychoacoustical analyses suggest that the categorization of extremely brief auditory stimuli depends on the variability of their spectral envelope in…
Intellectual property from a labour law perspective: the transfer of authors' rights in labour relationships
2020
This article analyses Spanish intellectual property law to establish whether formalised employment contracts are associated with the transfer to employers of the economic rights to works created by employees. This analysis is limited to the legal treatment of employee-created literary, artistic and scientific works, which are subject to authors' rights and are protected by intellectual property law. The study does not include inventions created in a labour relationship, which are regulated by legislation on patents and brands, and are thus dealt with differently according to industrial property rights.
In light of the ends. Copyright hysteresis and private copy exception after the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA) and oth…
2015
In British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA) and others v Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, the High Court of Justice in matter of private copy exception provides the twofold prime opportunity to shed light on the state of the art of copyright in the UK and to flesh out the idea of 'legal hysteresis’. I support the reintroduction of the private copy exception, possibly in a less narrow fashion, and I explain the reasons why I am confident that my expectations will be fulfilled.
Foreign direct investment attraction in the Baltic States
2014
This paper considers the importance of macroeconomic factors as well as investment climate for foreign direct invest ment attraction in the Baltic states. It reviews some of the indicators for measuring the investment climate and their usefulness as indicators of strength of FDI attraction and uses the results of econometric analysis to consider relative importance of various macroeconomic factors. The results suggest that perceptions of corruption and fiscal policy are some of the more important drivers of FDI attraction. The paper also considers several measures that could improve foreign direct investment attraction in the Baltic States such as expanding the protection of property right…
Monaster bazylianów w Wechracie w świetle dokumentów sporządzonych przed jego kasatą w 1808 roku
2019
W roku 1808 zostały sporządzone inwentarze, m.in. „Realności klasztoru bazyliańskiego werchrackiego”, dzięki którym można w przybliżeniu ocenić jego sytuację materialną. Dokumenty te są obecnie częścią zasobu Centralnego Państwowego Archiwum Historycznego Ukrainy we Lwowie. Klasztor należał wówczas do diecezji przemyskiej, dekanatu potylickiego i cyrkułu żółkiewskiego. Konfiskatę dóbr ruchomych i …
The use of reflection-card by elite youth basketball players, head coach and team manager : effects on players’ performance and perceptions of users
2017
AbstractThe purpose of the present paper was to test the effectiveness of the r-cards in sport performance, and to examine what kind of benefits and challenges the head coach, team manager and female basketball players (N = 12) faced when using the r-cards. Mixed methods were employed to gather specific data to answer the research questions. Inferential statistical analyses were conducted to examine whether players’ performances in terms of their targeted defensive rebound percentage and free-throw percentage differed across the five matches played. No significant differences were found. However, evidence from the qualitative data provides a contrasting but insightful perspective. Subjectiv…
