Histamine release in mesenteric traction syndrome during abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery: prophylaxis with H1 and H2 antihistamines

2002

Objective and design: Mesenteric traction syndrome is described as sudden tachycardia, hypotension and flush. Among other etiological factors eventeration or mesenteric traction of the small intestine may cause histamine release from mesenteric mast cells. We hypothesized that mesenteric traction syndrome may be positively influenced by prophylactic antihistamine administration.¶Methods: Male patients (n = 17, ASA groups III-IV, 48–78 years old) were investigated in a randomised double blind study during elective abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair. Eight patients had pre-anaesthetic prophylaxis with dimetindene (H1-receptor antagonist) plus cimetidine (H2-receptor antagonist), 9 patient…

Management strategies in patients affected by chronic total occlusions: results from the Italian Registry of Chronic Total Occlusions

2015

Background Through contemporary literature, the optimal strategy to manage coronary chronic total occlusions (CTOs) remains under debate. Objectives The aim of the Italian Registry of Chronic Total Occlusions (IRCTO) was to provide data on prevalence, characteristics, and outcome of CTO patients according to the management strategy. Methods The IRCTO is a prospective real world multicentre registry enrolling patients showing at least one CTO. Clinical and angiographic data were collected independently from the therapeutic strategy [optimal medical therapy (MT), percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)]; a comparative 1-year clinical followup was pe…

Targeted use of intraoperative frozen-section analysis lowers the frequency of completion thyroidectomy

2021

Abstract Background The impact of intraoperative frozen section (iFS) analysis on the frequency of completion thyroidectomy for the management of thyroid carcinoma is controversial. Although specialized endocrine centres have published their respective results, there are insufficient data from primary and secondary healthcare levels. The aim of this study was to analyse the utility of iFS analysis. Methods In the Prospective Evaluation Study Thyroid Surgery (PETS) 2 study, 22 011 operations for benign and malignant thyroid disease were registered prospectively in 68 European hospitals from 1 July 2010 to 31 December 2012. Group 1 consisted of 569 patients from University Medical Centre (UMC…

Jaw mobility changes in patients with upper aerodigestive tract cancer undergoing radiation therapy

2014

Background: Radiation therapy is a therapeutic modality widely used for treatment of upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) neoplasms. However, its action is not restricted to tumor cells, and it may cause a variety of adverse reactions, including reduced jaw mobility. Material and Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted to assess changes in jaw mobility in patients with UADT cancer undergoing radiation therapy. Results: Fifty-six patients completed the study. The results showed a significant reduction in mouth opening ( p <0.001), right lateral excursion ( p =0.038) and left lateral excursion ( p =0.035) of the jaw, a significant increase in the presence ( p <0.001) and severity of ora…

Cell-free DNA and Microvascular Damage in ST-segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction Treated With Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention.

2019

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction might originate from hyperactivated leukocytes at the coronary lesion. Our aim was to investigate the relationship between cfDNA and coronary reperfusion. METHODS We studied 116 patients treated with primary angioplasty using thrombus aspiration. Coronary (during aspiration) and peripheral (at the end of the procedure) blood samples were drawn for cfDNA, as well as high-sensitivity troponin T and myeloperoxidase quantification. The primary endpoint was no ST-segment resolution (STR) (≥ 70%) and the secondary endpoint was lack of final Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction flow 3 (TIMI 3). RESULTS…

Elevated plasma level of visfatin/pre-b cell colony-enhancing factor in male oral squamous cell carcinoma patients

2012

Objectives: Visfatin, also known as nicotiamide phosphoribosyltransferase or pre-B cell colony enhancing factor, is a pro-inflammatory cytokine whose serum level is increased in various cancers. In this study, we investigated whether plasma visfatin levels were altered in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The relation ship between plasma visfatin levels and the pretreatment hematologic profile was also explored. Study Design: Plasma visfatin concentrations were measured through ELISA in OSCC patients and control sub- D esign: Plasma visfatin concentrations were measured through ELISA in OSCC patients and control sub- esign: Plasma visfatin concentrations were measured throu…

Cholesterol-adjusted vitamin E serum levels are associated with cardiovascular events in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation.

2013

Non-valvular atrial fibrillation is associated with an increase in thromboembolism, i.e. stroke, and atherosclerotic events, i.e. myocardial infarction. Vitamin E possesses anti-coagulant as well as anti-atherosclerotic properties. Our aim was to assess whether vitamin E is associated with cardiovascular events in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation.Serum levels of cholesterol-adjusted vitamin E were measured in 1012 patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. Patients were followed for a mean time of 27.0 months, and cardiovascular events, such as cardiovascular death and fatal and nonfatal stroke or myocardial infarction, were recorded.During the follow-up period, cardiovas…

Prospective, randomized, single-center trial comparing 3 different 10F plastic stents in malignant mid and distal bile duct strictures.

2003

Abstract Background: The aim of this study was to determine whether patency rates differ with respect to the material, design, and surface texture of 3 different plastic stents. Methods: A total of 120 patients (median age 70.5 years; interquartile range 62-78 years) with malignant mid or distal bile duct strictures, seen between March 1996 and May 1999, were prospectively randomized to receive a 10F polyurethane stent, a Teflon Tannenbaum stent, or a hydrophilic hydromer-coated polyurethane stent. The primary study outcome measure was the interval between stent insertion and the first episode of clogging (or the presence of jaundice at death without stent exchange). All 3 types of stent we…

Impact of endovascular treatment on clinical status and health-related quality of life.

2008

Background and Aims: Investigating the impact of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) on clinical status and health related quality of life in patients with claudication and critical limb ischaemia (CLI). Material and Methods: 61 patients and 64 limbs underwent a primary PTA (30 claudication and 34 CLI cases). Clinical status was graded according to Ahn and Rutherford and ankle/brachial index (ABI). Quality of life was assessed using the Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) preoperatively, one month and one year after the procedure. Triplex scan evaluation of the treated arterial segment was carried out postoperatively and one year after the procedure. Results: Claudication: 24/27 patient…

Rheopheresis in Patients with Critical Limb Ischemia--Results of an Open Label Prospective Pilot Trial

2005

Rheopheresis is a specifically designed application of double filtration plasmapheresis, for extracorporeal treatment of microcirculatory disorders. Safety and efficacy of Rheopheresis for wound healing and skin oxygenation were investigated in patients with critical limb ischemia. Twelve patients of Fontaine stage III-IV were treated with a series of 10 Rheopheresis sessions over 17 weeks. Transcutaneous oxygen pressure (tcpO(2)) and ankle-brachial index (ABI) were repeatedly determined to monitor the effects of the Rheopheresis treatment series on microcirculation and skin blood flow. Laboratory parameters of blood rheology were measured in addition to safety parameters and course of the …
