Prospective analysis of infectious disease surveillance data using syndromic information.

2014

In this paper, we describe a Bayesian hierarchical Poisson model for the prospective analysis of data for infectious diseases. The proposed model consists of two components. The first component describes the behavior of disease during nonepidemic periods and the second component represents the increase in disease counts due to the presence of an epidemic. A novelty of our model formulation is that the parameters describing the spread of epidemics are allowed to vary in both space and time. We also show how syndromic information can be incorporated into the model to provide a better description of the data and more accurate one-step-ahead forecasts. These real-time forecasts can be used to …

Prospective surveillance of multivariate spatial disease data

2012

Surveillance systems are often focused on more than one disease within a predefined area. On those occasions when outbreaks of disease are likely to be correlated, the use of multivariate surveillance techniques integrating information from multiple diseases allows us to improve the sensitivity and timeliness of outbreak detection. In this article, we present an extension of the surveillance conditional predictive ordinate to monitor multivariate spatial disease data. The proposed surveillance technique, which is defined for each small area and time period as the conditional predictive distribution of those counts of disease higher than expected given the data observed up to the previous t…

US-Elastography for Breast Lesion Characterization: Prospective Comparison of US BIRADS, Strain Elastography and Shear wave Elastography

2020

To evaluate the diagnostic performance of strain elastography (SE) and 2 D shear wave elastography (SWE) and SE/SWE combination in comparison with conventional multiparametric ultrasound (US) with respect to improving BI-RADS classification results and differentiating benign and malignant breast lesions using a qualitative and quantitative assessment. In this prospective study, 130 histologically proven breast masses were evaluated with baseline US, color Doppler ultrasound (CDUS), SE and SWE (Toshiba Aplio 500 with a 7-15 MHz wide-band linear transducer). Each lesion was classified according to the BIRADS lexicon by evaluating the size, the B-mode and color Doppler features, the SE qualit…

Comparative Analysis of Periodontal Pain According to the Type of Precision Orthodontic Appliances: Vestibular, Lingual and Aligners. A Prospective C…

2021

The objective of this prospective clinical study was to analyze the pain (intensity, location and type) that patients presented after the placement of different types of orthodontic appliances: conventional, low friction, lingual and aligners. The sample consisted of 120 patients divided into four groups: conventional (CON), low friction (LF), lingual (LO) and aligners (INV). The participants were given the Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (Ortho-SF-MPQ), where they had to record the pain intensity (no pain, mild, moderate or intense) and the periodontal location at different time points, from the first 4 h to 7 days after the start of treatment. In all the study groups, the most freque…

Intraductal aspiration: a promising new tissue-sampling technique for the diagnosis of suspected malignant biliary strictures

2012

Brushing is the most commonly used technique for biliary sampling at ERCP, despite its limited sensitivity. To evaluate intraductal aspiration (IDA) as a new combined endoscopic technique for cytodiagnosis, its cellular adequacy, diagnostic accuracy for cancer detection, feasibility, and safety. Prospective, observational study. Single tertiary referral center. IDA cellular adequacy, diagnostic accuracy for cancer detection, feasibility, and safety. From April 2009 to September 2010, 42 consecutive patients with suspected malignant biliary stricture underwent ERCP, with tissue sampling obtained with IDA. IDA included performance of standard brushing in all patients. After standard brushing,…

The Use of a Surgical Patch in the Prevention of Lymphoceles After Extraperitoneal Pelvic Lymphadenectomy for Prostate Cancer: A Randomized Prospecti…

2009

Purpose: Pelvic lymphadenectomy is frequently performed simultaneously with radical prostatectomy to determine lymph node status and the most frequently recorded postoperative complication is the development of a symptomatic lymphocele. This study evaluated TachoSil® as an adjunct treatment in preventing lymphoceles after extraperitoneal pelvic lymphadenectomy for prostate cancer. Materials and Methods: A total of 60 consecutive patients who had undergone radical prostatectomy and pelvic lymphadenectomy were prospectively enrolled in this study. The patients were randomly assigned to a standard technique with the use of clips and electrocoagulation plus TachoSil, or to standard technique on…

Intraoperative vascular assessment for estimation of risk in primary closure of omphalocele and gastroschisis.

2013

Surgical repair of anterior abdominal wall defects is often complicated by a discrepancy between the eviscerated organs and the intra-abdominal space available. Primary closure of the abdominal wall may result in increased intra-abdominal pressure and consecutive circulatory impairment. We report the results of a retrospective and consecutive prospective study evaluating the influence of different witameters on mortality and morbidity in children with gastroschitis and omphalocele. Both studies demonstrated that real-time sonographic investigations, intraoperative Doppler duplex sonography, and colour-coded Doppler sonography provide the oppurtunity to collect objective intraoperative data.…

Electroretinographic oscillatory potentials in insulin-dependent diabetes patients: A long-term follow-up.

2002

Purpose: The aim of this research was to study the relevance of long-term follow-up of electroretinographic oscillatory potentials (OPs) in predicting the onset of minimal non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy in insulin-dependent diabetes patients. Methods: A total of 80 insulin-dependent diabetics, with normal fundi and normal OPs at first examination, were followed prospectively for 10 years. Oscillatory potentials were measured and fundus examinations performed once or twice per year. Results: During follow-up, 35% of patients developed diabetic retinopathy after a mean disease duration of 12 ± 2 years. A decrease in OP amplitudes was seen in 46% of this group, but reductions were also…

The reporting of study and population characteristics in degenerative cervical myelopathy: A systematic review

2017

OBJECT: Degenerative cervical myelopathy [DCM] is a disabling and increasingly prevalent condition. Variable reporting in interventional trials of study design and sample characteristics limits the interpretation of pooled outcomes. This is pertinent in DCM where baseline characteristics are known to influence outcome. The present study aims to assess the reporting of the study design and baseline characteristics in DCM as the premise for the development of a standardised reporting set. METHODS: A systematic review of MEDLINE and EMBASE databases, registered with PROSPERO (CRD42015025497) was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Full text articles in English, with >50 patients (p…

Peripheral T-cell lymphoma classification: the matter of cellular derivation.

2011

Peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCLs) represent approximately 12% of all non-Hodgkin's lymphomas in Western countries. They are quite heterogeneous as far as morphology and phenotype are concerned. Furthermore, until now, PTCLs could not be referred to specific normal counterparts, in contrast to B-cell-derived non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. In particular, in the last edition of the WHO classification of Tumors of the Hematopoietic and Lymphoid Tissues, for the majority of nodal PTCLs (including the not otherwise specified type and anaplastic large-cell lymphoma), the postulated cell of origin remained undefined. However, in the last few years, high-throughput genomic techniques, especially gene-ex…
