Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome: Clinical, Endoscopic, and Radiological Findings.

2018

Background. The superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome is a rare entity presenting with upper gastrointestinal tract obstruction and weight loss. Studies to determine the optimal methods of diagnosis and treatment are required. Aims and Methods. This study aims at analyzing the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of SMA syndrome. Ten cases of SMA syndrome out of 2074 esophagogastroduodenoscopies were suspected. A contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) scan was performed to confirm the diagnosis. After, a gastroenterologist and a nutritionist personalized the therapy. Furthermore, we compared the demographical, clinical, endoscopic, and radiological parameters of these …

SELF-REPORTED 12-MONTH OVERUSE INJURY HISTORY IN YOUTH BASKETBALL AND FLOORBALL

2014

Background The popularity of organized sports, especially team sports is growing among youth. High training volume and intensity at early age may predispose young athletes to overuse injuries. Objective To examine the occurrence, nature and severity of overuse injuries in youth basketball and floorball. Design A descriptive retrospective study. Setting Finnish youth basketball and floorball. Participants: 406 athletes (mean age 15.9, SD 2.0) from six basketball and floorball clubs (210 basketball and 196 floorball players). Main outcome measurements Self-reported history of overuse injuries over the preceding 12-month period. Data was obtained from a questionnaire. The severity of injuries …

5 Frontal plane femoral adduction during single-leg landing and low back pain in young athletes: a prospective profits cohort study

2019

Introduction Prospective studies investigating risk factors for low back pain (LBP) in young athletes are limited. The aim of this prospective cohort study was to investigate the association between LBP and selected biomechanical factors and postural stability during dynamic movement tasks in young athletes. Materials and methods 396 young floorball and basketball players (mean age 15.8±1.9) were included and followed prospectively for 1–3 years (2011–2014). In the beginning of every study year the players were tested. The physical tests included single-leg squat (SLS), single-leg vertical drop jump (SLVDJ), vertical drop jump (VDJ) and Star Reach Excursion Balance Test (SEBT). Individual e…

Nonsurgical treatments for primary liver carcinoma in elderly patients: a 12-year retrospective study

2013

Introduction: Cancer is a leading cause of death. 70 percent of cases develop over the age of 65. Although a few patients with metastatic cancer are potentially resectable for cure (particularly those with isolated metastases), treatment for most patients is palliative and generally consists of systemic chemotherapy asoociated to target therapy. Objectives: To evaluate efficacy, safety and outcome of the addition of bevacizumab to chemotherapy in advanced cancer in elderly patients, a prospective study was carried on the last four years at Gonesse Hospital Group. Methods: Patients older than 65year with advanced metastatic (Stage IV) cancer (fourteen colorectal carcinoma, five breast carcin…

The identification of biomarkers predicting acute and maintenance lithium treatment response in bipolar disorder: A plea for further research attenti…

2018

The prediction of acute and maintenance lithium treatment response carries major clinical and neurobiological implications, warranting systematic review. A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) compliant review searched major electronic databases from inception until December 2017 for studies documenting a clinical diagnosis of bipolar disorder (BD) made according to the mainstream diagnostic manuals and confirmed by a structured interview. Eligible studies allowed a quantitative comparison of endpoint vs baseline mean values of a given biomarker, regardless of the mood phase of patients with BD, and the disorder was assessed for severity using validate…

Agreement between 2 swept-source OCT biometers and a Scheimpflug partial coherence interferometer

2020

PURPOSE To evaluate the agreement between different parameters obtained with 2 swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT)-based biometers and 1 Scheimpflug camera with partial coherence interferometry (PCI). SETTING Single center, Oftalvist, Alicante, Spain. DESIGN Prospective case series. METHODS Biometry was performed in 49 eyes using 3 optical biometers: ANTERION SS-OCT, IOLMaster 700 SS-OCT, and Pentacam AXL PCI. Keratometry (K), J0 and J45 vectors, anterior chamber depth (ACD), central corneal thickness (CCT), white-to-white (WTW), lens thickness (LT), and axial length (AL) were measured with each device. Bland-Altman analysis was applied. RESULTS This study comprises 49 eyes o…

Precursors of bipolar disorders: A systematic literature review of prospective studies

2015

Objective To evaluate the presence of affective signs and symptoms as precursors of bipolar disorder in prospective studies, including assessment of their prevalence, duration, and predictive value. Data sources We followed PRISMA guidelines to search PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, EMBASE, SCOPUS, and ISI Web of Science databases to May 31, 2013, using the terms bipolar disorder AND (antecedent* OR predict* OR prodrom* OR prospect*) AND (diagnosis OR development). Hand searching of identified reports led to additional relevant references. Study selection We included only English-language articles containing (1) prospective, longitudinal studies with at least 2 structured clinical assessments (in…

Progression of Gastric Acid Production in Preterm Neonates: Utilization of In-vitro Method

2018

Background: There have been limited studies done regarding ability to produce gastric acid in preterm infants. Most studies have used in vivo method of assessing gastric pH. Objectives: The objectives of the study was to assess the feasibility of using an in vitro method of measuring gastric pH in babies ≤ 28 weeks gestational age (GA) and determine whether changes in gastric pH differ with gestational age, mode of delivery, and use of antenatal steroids. Design/Methods: Prospective study that enrolled extremely low birth weight (ELBW) babies. Gastric aspirate was collected before feeding. In vitro testing of gastric aspirates for pH were done on days of life 1, 3, 5, 7, 14, and 28 by using…

Prognostic impact of systolic blood pressure in acute heart failure with preserved ejection fraction in older patients

2021

Abstract Aims Recent guidelines recommend a systolic blood pressure (SBP) target below 130 mmHg in heart failure patients with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), whatever their age. We investigated whether this intensive SBP control was associated with better survival in very old adults hospitalized for acute HFpEF. Methods and results We conducted an observational study in an acute geriatric unit: all consecutive patients discharged from hospital for acute heart failure from 1 March 2019 to 29 February 2020 with a diagnosis of HFpEF were included. Re‐hospitalization and all‐cause mortality at 1 year were compared according to the mean SBP at discharge (patients with a mean SBP < 130 mmHg…
