p53 immunoreactivity in biopsy specimens of T1G3 transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder--a helpful parameter in guiding the decision for or again…
2000
The aim of this study was to determine whether p53 is helpful in making the decision to undergo cystectomy in T1, G3 transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the bladder, by prospectively comparing the p53 status of bladder biopsies with the histology and p53 status of the corresponding cystectomy specimens. From January 1996 to August 1997, 38 consecutive patients with T1G3 TCC at 6 different centres were enrolled into the study. Bladder biopsies and cystectomy specimens were examined with three different antibodies against p53. The p53 status of each bladder biopsy was compared with p53 status, tumour stage and grade of the cystectomy specimen. An independent evaluation of the histology and i…
Pain Mechanisms Involved and Outcome in Advanced Cancer Patients with Possible Indications for Celiac Plexus Block and Superior Hypogastric Plexus Bl…
2002
Aims and Background There is controversy about the role of neurolytic sympathetic blocks in advanced cancer, when pain syndromes may assume other characteristics, with a possible involvement of structures other than visceral. The aim of the present study was to assess the pain characteristics and the analgesic response of a consecutive sample of home care patients with pancreatic and pelvic pain, which would have possible indications for a celiac plexus block and a superior hypogastric block, respectively. Methods From January 1999 to December 1999, 400 consecutive advanced cancer patients were surveyed for a prospective longitudinal survey. We considered only patients who had pancreatic ca…
Protective effect of amifostine on dental health after radiotherapy of the head and neck.
2000
Abstract Purpose: The cytoprotective agent amifostine has been shown to reduce the radiation-induced acute and chronic xerostomia in head and neck cancer patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether or not amifostine also reduces the incidence of dental caries associated with the radiation-induced xerostomia. Methods and Materials: The dental status before and 1 year after radiotherapy was retrospectively compared in 35 unselected patients treated as part of the prospective randomized and multicenter open-label Phase III study (WR-38) at the University Hospitals of Heidelberg, Freiburg, and Erlangen. The WR-38 study compared radiotherapy in head and neck cancer with and witho…
A phase II trial of chimeric monoclonal antibody G250 for advanced renal cell carcinoma patients.
2004
Contains fulltext : 57114.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) Chimeric monoclonal antibody G250 (WX-G250) binds to a cell surface antigen found on >90% of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). A multicentre phase II study was performed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of WX-G250 in metastatic RCC (mRCC) patients. In all, 36 patients with mRCC were included. WX-G250 was given weekly by intravenous infusion for 12 weeks. Patients with stable disease (SD) or response were eligible to receive additional treatment for 8 weeks. None of the 36 enrolled patients experienced any drug-related grade III or IV toxicity. Only three patients had grade II toxicity possibly related to the study medication.…
Association Between Individual and Combined SNPs in Genes Related to Innate Immunity and Incidence of CMV Infection in Seropositive Kidney Transplant…
2014
In this study, we assessed the association between single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in seven candidate genes involved in orchestrating the immune response against cytomegalovirus (CMV) and the 12-month incidence of CMV infection in 315 CMV-seropositive kidney transplant (KT) recipients. Patients were managed either by antiviral prophylaxis or preemptive therapy. CMV infection occurred in 140 patients (44.4%), including 13 episodes of disease. After adjusting for various clinical covariates, patients harboring T-allele genotypes of interleukin-28B (IL28B) (rs12979860) SNP had lower incidence of CMV infection (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR]: 0.66; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.46-0.96; p…
Cerebral oxygen saturation and cardiac output during anaesthesia in sitting position for neurosurgical procedures: a prospective observational study.
2016
Abstract Background Neurosurgical operations in the dorsal cranium often require the patient to be positioned in a sitting position. This can be associated with decreased cardiac output and cerebral hypoperfusion, and possibly, inadequate cerebral oxygenation. In the present study, cerebral oxygen saturation was measured during neurosurgery in the sitting position and correlated with cardiac output. Methods Perioperative cerebral oxygen saturation was measured continuously with two different monitors, INVOS® and FORE-SIGHT®. Cardiac output was measured at eight predefined time points using transoesophageal echocardiography. Results Forty patients were enrolled, but only 35 (20 female) were …
Real-time, ultrasound-guided infraclavicular axillary vein cannulation for renal replacement therapy in the critical care unit—A prospective interven…
2015
Abstract Purpose The cannulation of the axillary vein for renal replacement therapy is a rarely performed procedure in the critical care unit. We defined the venipuncture and catheterization success rates and early mechanical complication rates of this technique in critical care patients with acute kidney injury. Materials and methods Twenty-nine mechanically ventilated patients with clinical indications for insertion of temporary hemodialysis catheters enrolled in a registered trial (NCT01919528) as a pilot cohort. We performed 29 real-time, ultrasound-guided infraclavicular axillary vein cannulation attempts for renal replacement therapy. We defined the venipuncture and catheterization su…
A new Infraclavicular Landmark-Based Approach to the Axillary Vein as an Alternative Method of Central Venous Cannulation
2016
Purpose: We developed the new technique of the axillary vein catheterization, which is connected with the determination of only two anatomical points of reference for puncture site identification. The primary outcome of this study was to determine the rate of successful catheterizations and the assessment of procedure success rate, depending on cannulation side as well as physician experience. The secondary objective was to evaluate the early complication rate and to determine whether this method can be used in clinical practice. Methods: The methodology of this prospective, cohort study included catheterization of the axillary vein via the infraclavicular approach. All procedures were perf…
Role of cytomegalovirus (CMV)-specific polyfunctional CD8+ T-cells and antibodies neutralizing virus epithelial infection in the control of CMV infec…
2015
The role of cytomegalovirus (CMV)-specific polyfunctional CD8+ T-cells and that of antibodies neutralizing virus epithelial infection (AbNEI) in the control of CMV DNAemia were investigated in 39 CMV-seropositive allogeneic stem-cell transplant (Allo-SCT) recipients with (n = 24) or without (n = 15) CMV DNAemia. AbNEI levels were monitored prospectively by means of a neutralization assay employing retinal epithelial cells (ARPE-19) and the recombinant CMV strain BADrUL131-Y4. Quantification of CMV-specific polyfunctional CD8+ T-cells (expressing two or three of the following markers: IFN-γγ, TNF-α and CD107a) in whole blood was performed by flow cytometry for intracellular cytokine staining…
Intrasubject repeatability of corneal power, thickness, and wavefront aberrations with a new version of a dual rotating Scheimpflug–Placido system
2014
Purpose To determine the intrasubject repeatability of a recently introduced dual-camera rotating Scheimpflug–Placido imaging system (Galilei G4) in determining corneal thickness, power, and wavefront aberrations in young healthy subjects. Setting University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain. Design Prospective evaluation of diagnostic technology. Methods The study comprised right eyes of 25 subjects aged 20 to 40 years with a spherical equivalent ranging from −4.25 to +1.00 diopters. The central corneal thickness, thinnest point value and location, anterior and posterior surface curvatures, total corneal power, and corneal wavefront aberrations were measured for distance vision using the dual S…
