CORRELATION OF OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY PATTERN AND VISUAL RECOVERY AFTER VITRECTOMY WITH SILICONE OIL FOR RETINAL DETACHMENT

2006

PURPOSE: To assess prospectively the features of the macular surface in silicone oil-filled eyes after surgery by analyzing whether silicone oil affects optical coherence tomography (OCT) measurements and their reproducibility and whether a statistical correlation exists between postoperative best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and foveal thickness measured by OCT. METHODS: Twenty eyes of 20 patients underwent vitrectomy with silicone oil tamponade for retinal detachment. After vitrectomy, complete ophthalmic examination including determination of BCVA and OCT was performed to quantify the visual recovery and the foveal thickness. RESULTS: Ophthalmoscopy revealed that the retina appeared to…

Association of Birth Weight With Foveolar Thickness in Adulthood: Results From a Population-Based Study

2021

Purpose Low birth weight (BW) is associated with alterations of foveal shape development in childhood—leading to an increased retinal thickness of the fovea. The aim of the present study was to assess whether BW has a long-term effect on foveal retinal thickness (RT) and is still present in adulthood. Methods In the German population-based Gutenberg Health Study (GHS), participants were examined with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. The association between self-reported BW and RT in the foveolar and perifoveal locations was assessed. Multivariable linear regression analyses with adjustment for potential confounders and grading of foveal hypoplasia were performed. Results Overal…

Fumaric acid ester treatment in cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE): a prospective, open-label, phase II pilot study.

2016

Objective The aim of the study was to assess the efficacy and safety of fumaric acid esters (FAEs) in patients with cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE). Methods In this 24-week, prospective, open-label, phase II pilot study, 11 patients with CLE, refractory to topical corticosteroids, were included. The primary endpoint of the study was the evaluation of the efficacy of FAEs after 24 weeks of treatment as assessed by the Revised Cutaneous Lupus Disease Area and Severity Index (RCLASI). Results Compared to baseline, significant improvement in the mean total RCLASI activity score and the mean RCLASI activity score for skin lesions was observed in week 12 ( p = 0.002, p = 0.002, respectively) …

Automatic fuzzy classification of the washout curves from magnetic resonance first-pass perfusion imaging after myocardial infarction.

2005

International audience; Abstract: Objectives: We sought to investigate the diagnostic ability of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) perfusion in acute reper-fused myocardial infarction. The study used fuzzy logic to automatically classify signal intensity-time curves from myocardial segments into 3 categories: normal, hypointense, and Hyperintense. Materials and Methods: Thirty-eight patients with myocardial infarction underwent short-axis cine-MRI and contrast-enhanced MRI to provide data on wall thickening and the transmural extent of infarction. Of these, 17 had a second cardiac MRI to ascertain the functional recovery in each segment. Results: The fuzzy logic based classification …

Low relative resting metabolic rate and body weight gain in adult Caucasian Italians

2005

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between resting metabolic rate (RMR) and subsequent changes in body size and degree of fatness in a group of adult Caucasian Italians. DESIGN: Prospective, longitudinal, observational study. SUBJECTS: In total, 155 subjects (72 males and 83 females, age range: 18–55 y; BMI: 17.5–63.4 kg/m2) were evaluated. In total, 43 (26 m and 17 f; BMI: 28.971.1 kg/m2, mean7s.e.m.) of them were reassessed 10–12 y later. MEASUREMENTS: Anthropometric and body composition (bioimpedance analysis) parameters and RMR (indirect calorimetry) were taken at baseline and after 10–12 y. RESULTS: Subjects (15 m, 8 f) who gained body weight (arbitrarily defined as a change in…

The benefits of sustained leisure-time physical activity on job strain

2010

Background The long-term effects of leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) on job strain have not been assessed in a large prospective population-based cohort study. Aims To examine the relationship between the LTPA and the prevalence of job strain. Methods The participants were 861 full-time employees (406 men and 455 women), aged 24―39 years in 2001, from the ongoing Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study. LTPA was assessed using a self-report questionnaire in 1992 and in 2001. The participants were grouped into four categories according to tertiles of LTPA index at two time points: persistently active, increasingly active, decreasingly active and persistently inactive. Job strain was me…

Long-Term Determinants of Muscle Strength Decline: Prospective Evidence from the 22-Year Mini-Finland Follow-Up Survey

2012

Objectives: To examine long-term changes in handgrip strength and the factors predicting handgrip strength decline. Design: Longitudinal cohort study with 22 years of follow-up. Setting: Population-based Mini-Finland Health Examination Survey in Finland. Participants: Nine hundred sixty-three men and women aged 30 to 73 at baseline. Measurements: Handgrip strength was measured using a handheld dynamometer at baseline and follow-up. Information on potential risk factors, namely lifestyle and chronic conditions, and their changes throughout the follow-up were based on health interviews. Results: Based on linear mixed-effect models, midlife physically strenuous work, excess body weight, smokin…

A pooled analysis of alcohol consumption and risk of multiple myeloma in the international multiple myeloma consortium

2013

Abstract Background: Recent findings suggest that alcohol consumption may reduce risk of multiple myeloma. Methods: To better understand this relationship, we conducted an analysis of six case–control studies participating in the International Multiple Myeloma Consortium (1,567 cases, 7,296 controls). Summary ORs and 95% confidence intervals (CI) relating different measures of alcohol consumption and multiple myeloma risk were computed by unconditional logistic regression with adjustment for age, race, and study center. Results: Cases were significantly less likely than controls to report ever drinking alcohol (men: OR = 0.72; 95% CI, 0.59–0.89; women: OR = 0.81; 95% CI, 0.68–0.95). The inv…

Obtaining a male circumcision prevalence rate of 80% among adults in a short time

2017

Abstract World Health Organization recommends a target for the male circumcision prevalence rate of 80%. This rate will have a substantial impact on the human immunodeficiency virus-acquired immunodeficiency syndrome epidemic in Eastern and Southern Africa. The objective of the study was to assess whether an innovative intervention can lead to an increased voluntary male medical circumcision (VMMC) uptake among adults in a short time. This prospective observational study of a demand generation intervention was conducted in the township of Orange Farm (South Africa) in August to November 2015. In this community male circumcision prevalence rate among adults was stable between 2010 and 2015 a…

Night Work and Mortality: Prospective Study Among Finnish Employees Over the Time Span 1984 to 2008

2012

There is considerable evidence showing that night work is associated with increased morbidity, but only a few studies have focused on its relation to mortality. This study investigates the relationship between the type of working-time arrangement (weekly night work/daytime work) and total and cause-specific mortality among men and women. The data consist of a representative working conditions survey of Finnish employees conducted in 1984 (2286 men/2216 women), which has been combined with register-based follow-up data from Statistics Finland covering the years 1985-2008. In the 1984 survey, the employees were asked if they worked during the night (23:00-06:00 h) and if so, how often. In thi…
