Tuning protein adsorption on graphene surfaces via laser-induced oxidation

2021

An approach for controlled protein immobilization on laser-induced two-photon (2P) oxidation patterned graphene oxide (GO) surfaces is described. Selected proteins, horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and biotinylated bovine serum albumin (b-BSA) were successfully immobilized on oxidized graphene surfaces, via non-covalent interactions, by immersion of graphene-coated microchips in the protein solution. The effects of laser pulse energy, irradiation time, protein concentration and duration of incubation on the topography of immobilized proteins and consequent defects upon the lattice of graphene were systemically studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Raman spectroscopy. AFM and fluorescence…

Nutritional intake and anthropometric characteristics are associated with endurance performance and markers of low energy availability in young femal…

2023

Background Low energy availability (LEA) can have negative performance consequences, but the relationships between LEA and performance are poorly understood especially in field conditions. In addition, little is known about the contribution of macronutrients to long-term performance. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate if energy availability (EA) and macronutrient intake in a field-based situation were associated with laboratory-measured performance, anthropometric characteristics, blood markers, training volume, and/or questionnaire-assessed risk of LEA in young female cross-country (XC) skiers. In addition, the study aimed to clarify which factors explained performance. Metho…

Innovations for sustainable protein systems

2019

Purpose: Introduction of new, alternative protein sources and products for replacing conventional animal products requires many innovations at the product level and the system level. However, less attention has been given to analyzing the emergence of entrepreneurial and business responses to sustainable protein system. The purpose of the paper is to analyze the opportunities and challenges in food processing related to sustainable protein systems from the perspective of sustainable innovations and sustainable entrepreneurship. Design/methodology/approach: Thematic qualitative interviews were conducted in Finnish food manufacturing companies during the first half of 2018. Nineteen (19) inte…

Localization of I-BAR domain proteins in invasive cancer cells

2011

An important step in cancer metastasis is the ability of the cancer cells to degrade the surrounding extracellular matrix (ECM) and migrate through it. To accomplish this, invasive cancer cells generate protrusive structures called invadopodia, which are dynamic cell protrusions that secrete matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) responsible for the degradation of the ECM. Invadopodia formation employs the actin polymerization machinery and several cell adhesion, signal transduction and matrix degradation proteins. In addition, mechanisms involving membrane deformation may play a major role in their formation. Recently, an evolutionary conserved group of proteins involved in the formation of cell…

Rasvaisen ruokavalion ja kestävyysharjoittelun vaikutukset angiogeneesin säätelyproteiineihin hiiren raajalihaksessa

2011

Verisuonten tehtävänä on toimia hapen kulkureittinä matkalla kudoksiin.

Targeting the Activin Receptor Signaling to Counteract the Multi-Systemic Complications of Cancer and Its Treatments

2021

Muscle wasting, i.e., cachexia, frequently occurs in cancer and associates with poor prognosis and increased morbidity and mortality. Anticancer treatments have also been shown to contribute to sustainment or exacerbation of cachexia, thus affecting quality of life and overall survival in cancer patients. Pre-clinical studies have shown that blocking activin receptor type 2 (ACVR2) or its ligands and their downstream signaling can preserve muscle mass in rodents bearing experimental cancers, as well as in chemotherapy-treated animals. In tumor-bearing mice, the prevention of skeletal and respiratory muscle wasting was also associated with improved survival. However, the definitive proof tha…

Synthesis of nanostructured protein–mineral-microcapsules by sonication

2022

We propose a simple and eco-friendly method for the formation of composite protein–mineral-microcapsules induced by ultrasound treatment. Protein- and nanoparticle-stabilized oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions loaded with different oils are prepared using high-intensity ultrasound. The formation of thin composite mineral proteinaceous shells is realized with various types of nanoparticles, which are pre-modified with Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) and subsequently characterized by EDX, TGA, zeta potential measurements and Raman spectroscopy. Cryo-SEM and EDX mapping visualizations show the homogeneous distribution of the densely packed nanoparticles in the capsule shell. In contrast to the results re…
