The pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-6 (refs. 1-5) can bind to cells lacking the IL-6 receptor (IL-6R) when it forms a complex with the soluble IL-6R (sIL-6R) (trans signaling). Here, we have assessed the contribution of this system to the increased resistance of mucosal T cells against apoptosis in Crohn disease (CD), a chronic inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract. We have reported that cordycepin, an adenosine derivative from the fungus Cordyceps, increased interleukin (IL)-10 expression, decreased IL-2 expression and suppressed T lymphocyte activity. In the present study, we further characterized the regulatory effects of cordycepin on human immune cells. The pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of the optical enantiomers of phenprocoumon were studied in 5 normal subjects and compared to the racemic mixture. Each subject received a single oral dose of 0.6 mg/kg of racemic, S(-), and R(+) phenprocoumon. S(-) phenprocoumon was 1.6 to 2.6 times as a potent as R(+) phenprocoumon when the area under the effect/time curve was used to quantify the total anticoagulant effect per dose. Comparing the plasma concentrations that elicited the same anticoagulant effect, S(-) phenprocoumon was 1.5 to 2.5 times as potent as R(+) phenprocoumon. In order to determine the role of the IGF-I receptor (IGF-IR) in human pheochromocytomas we have compared the expression of the IGF-IR in normal tissues and in pheochromocytomas with regard to the IGF-IR mRNA levels and ligand binding. By semiquantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), the mRNA of the IGF-IR could be detected in all samples of normal adrenomedullary cells (n=13) and pheochromocytomas (n=16). Very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) 1 and 2 were fractionated by heparin affinity chromatography into a bound and an unbound fraction and the different subfractions were quantified in 17 normolipidaemic (NL), 13 hypercholesterolaemic (HC), 10 hypertriglyceridaemic (HTG) and 11 combined hyperlipidaemic subjects (CHL). Unbound VLDL1 and VLDL2 were, respectively, 1.9- and 2.2-fold richer in triglycerides than bound VLDL1 and VLDL2. Abstract The discovery of rhamnose-binding lectins (RBLs) in teleost fish eggs led to the identification of a novel lectin family characterized by a unique sequence motif and a structural fold, and initially proposed to modulate fertilization. Further studies of the RBL tissue localization and gene organization were also suggestive of role(s) in innate immunity.
