Slightly more complex than the previous one, a quick way to induce hyperemia is to inject a contrast bolus. Although the degree of hyperemia reached this way is not as large as with vasodilators, this maneuver can still allow unmasking a gradient.

Invention of foam sclerotherapy has significantly changed the current phlebological practice. Compared with liquid sclerosants, obliterating foam is more efficient, especially for the closure of larger veins. This review discusses clinical aspects of foam sclerotherapy with a focus on its use for the treatment of venous leg ulceration, including the rationale for its use in the treatment of these chronic wounds, physicochemical mechanisms responsible for stability and disintegration of sclerosant foam, pathomechanism of neurologic adverse events seen after foam sclerotherapy, and techniques that can increase efficacy of this procedure and lower frequency of adverse events.

Background Epidural hematomas, cerebrospinal fluid fistula, and spinal infections are challenging postoperative complications following vertebro-spinal procedures. We report our preliminary results using autologous fibrin sealant as both fibrin glue and a hemostatic during these operations. Methods Prospectively, between January 2013 and March 2015, 68 patients received an autologous fibrin sealant prepared with the Vivostat(®) system applied epidurally to provide hemostasis and to seal the dura. Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a relatively rare genetic disorder that is most commonly caused by a deficiency of C1 inhibitor. It is estimated that HAE affects at least one in 10,000 to one in 50,000 of the worldwide population, with relapsing swelling of the skin and abdominal pain attacks being the most common clinical symptoms. Most seriously, laryngeal edema associated with HAE may lead to death. Replacement therapy with intravenous pasteurized C1 inhibitor concentrate is the recommended treatment for acute attacks of HAE, resulting in a rapid resolution of symptoms. Optimal nutritional and hormonal statuses are determinants of successful ageing. The age associated decline in anabolic hormones such as testosterone and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is a strong predictor of metabolic syndrome, diabetes and mortality in older men. Studies have shown that magnesium intake affects the secretion of total IGF-1 and increase testosterone bioactivity. This observation suggests that magnesium can be a modulator of the anabolic/catabolic equilibrium disrupted in the elderly people. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The current analysis expands the knowledge on atherogenic lipid profiles in NAFLD by modeling changes in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and total cholesterol (TC) in a prospectively enrolling real-life study cohort to inform physicians on the cardiovascular (CV) event risk based on these changes. A total of 304 patients with histologically confirmed NAFLD were included (mean age, 52 years; equal sex distribution).
