In this thesis I study the role of culture in the context of social movements. I argue that the role of concrete cultural forms in protest movements’ action has undergone a rather small interest in the Finnish study of social movements. I examine culture in social movements by looking at the “cultural turn” in social sciences, the rise of “new social movements” and through the theorizing of Pierre Bourdieu, Sarah Thornton and Ron Eyerman and Andrew Jamison. I conceptualize culture as both the concrete cultural praxis (e.g. music, art, dancing) and as a semiotic and cognitive system behind all action. The focus is on the contesting representations constructed in various discourses by various participants of newspaper texts. The data consists of 1204 news and other journalistic items collected from nine Finnish national and regional newspapers between 1995 and 2000. Elektorālo protestu tēma pēdējā laikā ir aktualizējusies. Attiecīgi, rodas jautājums, kā protesta konteksts ietekmē protesta rezultātu. Teorētiskā pieeja primāri balstās uz Lipseta modernizācijas teoriju. Empīrisko bāzi veido elektorālie protesti, kas kopš 2000. gada notika 8 pēcpadomju valstīs. Situācija atlasītājas valstīs 5 gadu periodā pirms protestiem ir analizēta pēc vairākiem kritērijiem. Pētījums ir parādījis, ka modernizācijas līmenim nav būtiskas saistības ar protestu rezultātiem, kurus galvenokārt ietekmē faktoru kombinācija, un īpaši autokrātijas un režīma konsolidācijas līmenis valstī, kā arī atsevišķo aktoru lēmumi.
