Les systèmes de fosses profondes à la Pré- et Protohistoire : cartographie des fosses mésolithiques et des Schlitzgruben à l’échelle nationale

2016

A nation-wide project of mapping deep pits dating to Pre- and Protohistory in continental France was launched by INRAP in 2015. Positioned at the interface between regional projects, on pits with V-, Y- and W-shaped profile (Schlitzgruben) as well as on deep pits dated to the Mesolithic, and nation-wide studies carried out by the INRAP (such as those focusing on the Bronze Age and Early Iron Age), the current project aims to bring together data and actors within the field of rescue archaeology in order to create an operational mapping tool. Constructed on a rational basis combining four levels of information (operation, pit systems, pits, absolute dates), this tool should ensure the incorpo…

Ancient architecture in Provence between the Iron Age and the Imperial era: the pillars of the Château-Bas site in Vernègues

2013

The site of Château-Bas (Vernègues, Bouches-du-Rhône), famous above all for its Augustan Roman temple, has yielded a set of pillars decorated either with writhing snakes or with straight rods. As yet there are no known parallels to such pillars. The discovery of a fragment of a pillar reused in a 1st c. AD structure demonstrates that these carvings are ancient. The architectural study of the fragments and comparison with other sculptural elements from southern Gaul suggest they date approximately to the turn of the millenium. The originality of these pieces should perhaps be sought in the copying and adaptation of Italic architectural features (Attic base, Tuscan capital) to a particular fo…

Caractérisation des céramiques à bioclastes de la Protohistoire dans l’ouest de la France.

2015

The study of the ceramics from the site of the Batterie Basse in the region of Manche, shows again that the presence of bioclasts in the clays of protohistoric ceramics is a very common phenomenon in Normandy unlike in Brittany, where in the current state of knowledge only one individual from the Iron Age has been described. These bioclasts, mostly fragments of bivalves, are non-plastic elements naturally present in the clays, either in the form of fossils, either in the form of contemporary shells, or are incorporated by the craftsmans after being pounded to modify the technical characteristics of the clays. The aim of this work is to awareness the archaeologists to this type of artefacts …
