Spectroscopic correlates of antidepressant response to sleep deprivation and light therapy: a 3.0 Tesla study of bipolar depression.

2007

Glutamate is the primary excitatory neurotransmitter of the human brain, and recent findings suggest a role for the glutamatergic system in the pathophysiology and treatment of mood disorders. Single proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) was used to study the relative in vivo levels of brain neural metabolites. We evaluated the effect of antidepressant treatments on the relative concentration of unresolved glutamate and glutamine (Glx) with GABA contamination (2.35 ppm peak) using single voxel 1H-MRS at 3.0 Tesla. We studied 19 inpatients (7 males, 12 females) affected by bipolar disorder type 1, current depressive episode without psychotic features, before and after 1 week of tre…

Facilitated transport of diuron and glyphosate in high copper vineyard soils.

2007

6 pages; International audience; The fate of organic herbicides applied to agricultural fields may be affected by other soil amendments, such as copper applied as a fungicide. The effect of copper on the leaching of diuron and glyphosate through a granitic and a calcareous soil was studied in the laboratory using sieved-soil columns. Each soil was enriched with copper sulfate to obtain soil copper concentrations of 125, 250, 500, and 1000 mg kg(-1). Glyphosate leaching was influenced by soil pH and copper concentration, whereas diuron leaching was not. In the calcareous soil, glyphosate leaching decreased as copper levels increased from 17 mg kg(-1) (background) to 500 mg kg(-1). In the gra…

Changes in the proton-motive force in Escherichia coli in response to external oxidoreduction potential.

1999

International audience; The pH homeostasis and proton-motive force (Deltap) of Escherichia coli are dependent on the surrounding oxidoreduction potential (ORP). Only the internal pH value and, thus, the membrane pH gradient (DeltapH) component of the Deltap is modified, while the membrane potential (DeltaPsi) does not change in a significant way. Under reducing conditions (Eh < 50 mV at pH 7.0), E. coli decreases its Deltap especially in acidic media (21% decrease at pH 7.0 and 48% at pH 5.0 for a 850-mV ORP decrease). Measurements of ATPase activity and membrane proton conductance (CH+m) depending on ORP and pH have shown that the internal pH decrease is due to an increase in membrane prot…

Synthesis and coordination properties of an azamacrocyclic Zn(II) chemosensor containing pendent methylnaphthyl groups

2008

The synthesis of a polyazamacrocycle constituted by two diethylenetriamine bridges functionalized at their central nitrogen with naphth-2-ylmethyl units and interconnected through 2,6-dimethylpyridine spacers (L1) is reported. The protonation behaviour of the new macrocycle in water and in water-ethanol 70/30 v/v mixed solvent has been examined by means of pH-metric, UV-Vis and steady-state fluorescence techniques. The fluorescence emission is slightly quenched following the deprotonation of the central tertiary amines and more deeply quenched upon deprotonation of the secondary amino groups. pH-Metric titrations show that in water-ethanol 70/30 v/v L1 forms stable mononuclear complexes wit…

Zn(II)-coordination and fluorescence studies of a new polyazamacrocycle incorporating 1H-pyrazole and naphthalene units.

2010

The synthesis and Zn(2+) coordination properties of a new macrocycle (L1) obtained by dipodal (2 + 2) condensation of the polyamine 3-(naphthalen-2-ylmethyl)pentane-1,5-diamine with 1H-pyrazole-3,5-dicarbaldehyde are reported. pH-metric studies show that L1 bears five measurable protonation steps in the 2.0-11.0 pH range. Fluorescence emission studies indicate that the removal of the first proton from the H(5)L1(5+) species leads to a significant decrease in the emission due to a photoinduced electron transfer process. Addition of Zn(2+) promotes a boat-like conformation that approaches both fluorophores and facilitates the formation of an excimer which reaches its highest emission for a 1 …

Quantification and classification of high-resolution magic angle spinning data for brain tumor diagnosis.

2007

The goal of this work is to propose a complete protocol (preprocessing, processing and classification) for classifying brain tumors with proton high-resolution magic-angle spinning ((1)H HR-MAS) data. The different steps of the procedure are detailed and discussed. Feature extraction techniques such as peak integration, including also the automated quantitation method AQSES, were combined with linear (LDA) and non-linear (least-squares support vector machine or LS-SVM) classifiers. Classification accuracy was assessed using a stratified random sampling scheme. The results suggest that LS-SVM performs better than LDA while AQSES performs better than the standard peak integration feature extr…

Cerebral metabolism after transient ischemic attack. A 1H MR spectroscopy study

1999

International audience; Abstract: Metabolic changes induced by cerebral infarction or by stenosis and occlusion of the internal carotid artery have been previously described in 1H Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1H MRS). These changes are essentially characterized by decreased N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA) and increased lactate concentration. Little is known about the metabolic changes observed in the three days following a transient ischemic attack (TIA) in the absence of stenosis or occlusion of the internal carotid artery, and without visible infarction on Magnetic Resonance imaging (MRI). We studied five patients with a TIA lasting between 30 min and 3 h, affecting the sensory and motor fun…

Liver methylene fraction by dual- and triple-echo gradient-echo imaging at 3.0T: Correlation with proton MR spectroscopy and estimation of robustness…

2011

Purpose To assess the systematic errors in liver methylene fraction (LMF) resulting from fat–fat interference effects with dual- and triple-echo gradient-recalled-echo Dual/Triple GRE) sequences and to test the robustness of these sequences after iron overloading. Materials and Methods Forty type-2 diabetic patients underwent LMF measurement by 3.0T 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (corrected for T1 and T2 decays) as the reference standard and liver fat fraction (%Fat) measurement by four Dual/Triple GRE sequences with 20° and 60° flip angle (α), corrected for T1 recovery. The same four sequences were repeated in eight patients after ferumoxide injection. Corrections for systematic errors…

Defective jejunal brush border membrane sodium/proton exchange in association with lethal familial protracted diarrhoea.

1990

The spectrum of clinical disease associated with specific defects in jejunal brush border membrane sodium/proton exchange is poorly defined and only two patients have been described so far. Jejunal brush border membrane transport studies were performed in a boy who presented with lethal familial protracted diarrhoea in the first few days of life. Using jejunal brush border membrane vesicles prepared from conventional jejunal biopsy specimens, initial sodium uptake under H+ gradient conditions was found to be only 6% of the mean control value. In contrast, sodium stimulated glucose uptake was normal. Our data confirm the importance of a congenital defect in this exchanger as a cause of sever…

Cognitive impairment: classification by 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

2004

1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) allows accurate and non-invasive in vivo metabolic study, and is a useful tool for the diagnosis of different forms of dementias. Cognitive impairment pathologies have been almost exclusively studied with MRS by comparison with healthy without a global comparison amongst Alzheimer disease (AD), vascular dementia, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and major depression patients with cognitive impairment. Whereas decrease of N-acetylaspartate (NAA) and increase myo-Inositol (mI) at different brain locations by 1H MRS are common features of AD, Choline (Cho) alterations have been inconclusive. In our study, 64 patients with cognitive impairment were evalua…
