CEO Compensation and Risk-Taking: Evidence from Listed European Hotel Firms

2020

This paper examines the relationship between CEO compensation policies and financial performance in the European hotel sector. We analyze CEO cash-, equity- and total-compensation relationships with two accounting-based and two market-based financial performance proxies, including a bi-dimensional proxy formed by stock market return and risk. This bi-dimensional market-based financial performance proxy enables us to take a deep dive into the relationship between CEO compensation policies and firm risk-taking. We then analyze the nature of this relationship by decomposing market-based risk into systematic and idiosyncratic risk, using five alternative asset-pricing factorial models. Our resu…

Statistically validated mobile communication networks: the evolution of motifs in European and Chinese data

2014

Big data open up unprecedented opportunities to investigate complex systems including the society. In particular, communication data serve as major sources for computational social sciences but they have to be cleaned and filtered as they may contain spurious information due to recording errors as well as interactions, like commercial and marketing activities, not directly related to the social network. The network constructed from communication data can only be considered as a proxy for the network of social relationships. Here we apply a systematic method, based on multiple hypothesis testing, to statistically validate the links and then construct the corresponding Bonferroni network, gen…

A comparative analysis of the statistical properties of large mobile phone calling networks.

2014

Mobile phone calling is one of the most widely used communication methods in modern society. The records of calls among mobile phone users provide us a valuable proxy for the understanding of human communication patterns embedded in social networks. Mobile phone users call each other forming a directed calling network. If only reciprocal calls are considered, we obtain an undirected mutual calling network. The preferential communication behavior between two connected users can be statistically tested and it results in two Bonferroni networks with statistically validated edges. We perform a comparative analysis of the statistical properties of these four networks, which are constructed from …

Child abuse in a medical setting: Case illustrations of two variants of munchausen sindrome by proxy

2017

Munchausen syndrome is a complex type of abuse, which is often underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed in clinical practice, and has harmful consequences for children. Its relationship with child abuse, of which it is a variety, must be recognized in clinical and forensic practice. The authors report herein two observed cases of different types of Münchausen syndrome by proxy (MSbP). The first, is the most severe form of MSbP, with induced, true illness and related pathological symptoms into victim. The second case is a moderate form, much more complex to detect, in which a perpetrator parent simulates and aggravates the child‘s illness. Adequate training of health professionals and investigators…

A Survey on Proxy Mobile IPv6 Handover

2016

[EN] As wireless technologies have been improving in recent years, a mobility management mechanism is required to provide seamless and ubiquitous mobility for end users who are roaming among points of attachment in wireless networks. Thus, Mobile IPv6 was developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) to support the mobility service. However, Mobile IPv6 is unable to fulfill the requirements of real-time applications, such as video streaming service and voice over IP service, due to its high handover (HO) latency. To address this problem, Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6) has been introduced by the IETF. In PMIPv6, which is a network-based approach, the serving network controls mobility m…

Financial incentive to prepay in fixed-rate mortgages

2004

The borrower's financial incentive to prepay is a crucial determinant in estimating prepayment in mortgage pools and, consequently, in valuing mortgage-backed securities. In mortgage prepayment literature, this incentive to prepay has been proxied by both the ratio of the loan rate to the refinancing rate and by the arithmetic spread between the two rates; however, the former is considered to be a better proxy of the refinancing incentive than the latter by a section of the literature. In this paper, the authors check the accuracy of that statement and subsequently estimate two prepayment functions using, alternatively, the two proxies. The results indicate that the use of the ratio does no…

Climate signals in stable carbon and hydrogen isotopes of lignin methoxy groups from southern German beech trees

2021

Stable hydrogen and carbon isotope ratios of wood lignin methoxy groups (δ13CLM and δ2HLM values) have been shown to be reliable proxies of past temperature variations. Previous studies showed that δ2HLM values even work in temperate environments where classical tree-ring width and maximum latewood density measurements are less successful for climate reconstructions. Here, we analyse the annually resolved δ13CLM values from 1916–2015 of four beech trees (Fagus sylvatica) from a temperate site near Hohenpeißenberg in southern Germany and compare these data with regional- to continental-scale climate observations. Initial δ13CLM values were corrected for the Suess effect (a decrease of δ13C i…

Abstract. Here, we present the first quantitative speleothem record of lignin oxidation products (LOPs), which has been determined in a Holocene stalagmite from the Herbstlabyrinth Cave in central Germany. In addition, we present LOP results from 16 months of drip water monitoring. Lignin is only produced by vascular plants and therefore has the potential to be an unambiguous vegetation proxy and to complement other vegetation and climate proxies in speleothems. We compare our results with stable isotope and trace element data from the same sample. In the stalagmite, LOP concentrations show a similar behavior to P, Ba and U concentrations, which have previously been interpreted as vegetatio…

How does public spending affect technical efficiency? Some evidence from 15 European countries

2020

The relationship between government size and economic growth has been widely debated. Revisiting the subject from a distinct angle with respect to the mainstream approach, we provide an empirical analysis of the impact of government size on technical efficiency. The aim of this paper is to estimate the impact of public sector's size and of public expenditure components on 15 European countries’ technical efficiency from 1996 to 2014 by using a True Random Effect model. Using the total public expenditure as a proxy for the government size we estimate simultaneously national optimal production function and technical efficiency by controlling for income distribution and institutional quality. …
