Diurnal irrigation timing affects fruit growth in late-ripening nectarines
2021
Little is known about the best diurnal irrigation timing for maximum fruit growth in stone fruit, despite fruit size being the most important focus for growers to achieve maximum marketable yield. This study investigated the effects of morning and afternoon irrigation on nectarine fruit growth in stage I (cell division) and stage III (cell expansion). In the 2017/18 season, ‘September Bright’ trees were subjected to morning (Iam) and afternoon (Ipm) irrigations. Fruit diameter was monitored continuously (15-min intervals) using fruit gauges and converted into fruit weight, relative growth rate (RGR) and fruit growth efficiency (FGE), with the latter representing RGR per unit of crop water s…
A simple, rapid extraction and assay procedure for the NAD+-dependent sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH) in peach
1998
Sorbitol is the major photosynthetic product in peach. In sink tissues, sorbitol is converted to fructose via the NAD+-dependent sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH). A new procedure is described that allows rapid, simple quantification of SDH activity in growing tissues. The procedure uses only 0.01 to 2.5 grams of fresh tissue per sample, such that a single shoot tip, a single root tip, or about 5 g of fruit flesh can be assayed for SDH activity. Storage of samples at 4 or -20 C° over night resulted in significant loss of enzyme activity. Thus, freshly harvested tissues were ground with sand in buffer at 2°C in a mortar and pestle, and the homogenate centrifuged @ 3000 ´ g to remove particulate m…
Identification of self(in)compatibility genotypes and microsatellite marker based fingerprinting of traditional italian sweet cherry accessions
2012
Italy is one of the main European sweet cherry producers and it has a rich germplasm, including many minor local varieties that have not been well studied or used in breeding programmes. Sweet cherry is self-incompatible, with few exceptions; its incompatibility is controlled by a multi-allelic S locus, which is gametophytically expressed. The knowledge of S-alleles and cross-incompatibility groups of sweet cherry genotypes and cultivars is important for growers and breeders. In this work we analysed 48 traditional sweet cherry varieties and cultivars, mainly from Calabria and Emilia Romagna regions, together with eight Sicilian cultivars and the standard set of reference genotypes proposed…

The effect of two growth bio regulators on the physiological, phenological and qualitative parameters of peach tree production
2021
The risk that plants have not accumulated sufficient chilling units (CU) and the economic interest in anticipating flowering have led to growing scientific interest in the use of bio plant regulators to stop dormant peach trees in farms that use agronomic particulates in precision farming protocols. The trials were conducted in 2016 and 2017, on peach trees of the cultivar Maycrest, grown in a commercial orchard located in Metaponto, Basilicata (Southern Italy). A complete randomization experimental scheme was adopted; three theses (control, Fast and Regular® and Asy 23) and two different intervention periods have been provided for, the doses used have been 500g/hl for Fast & Regular® a…
