Assessment of genetic diversity of Latvian and Swedish sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) genetic resources collections by using SSR (microsatellite) mar…
2009
Abstract Three previously described highly polymorphic SSR (microsatellite) primer pairs were tested on 126 sweet cherry ( Prunus avium L.) accessions to adapt a fast, reliable method for preliminary screening of sweet cherry germplasm collections and to compare two sweet cherry germplasm collections: at the Latvia State Institute of Fruit-Growing, Dobele (LIFG-Dobele) and at the Division of Horticultural Genetics and Plant Breeding at Balsgard, Department of Crop Sciences, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU-Balsgard). The SSR loci were highly polymorphic with 4–10 different alleles and 5–18 genotypes. Heterozygosity values ranged from 0.431 to 0.809, gene diversity (PIC) valu…
Controlled temperature grinding under modified atmosphere for Almond (Prunus Dulcis) paste production
2011
The quality of the raw material and the processing conditions have a great influence on the nutritional properties of finished products. This research is focused on almond paste production and aims at developing a new production process to deliver the high nutritional content of the raw almonds into the finished product. Raw almonds are composed mainly of fats (approx. 50%) and proteins (approx. 25%), and are particularly rich in omega 6 fatty acids, and are hence exposed to denaturation and oxidation phenomena during the traditional grinding/homogenization process. The study involved the analysis of six different local cultivars based upon the main nutritional indicators (protein content, …
Partitioning of Sorbitol and Sucrose Catabolism within Peach Fruit
2002
The peach (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch (Peach Group)) fruit is a sink organ comprised of different types of tissue, which undergoes three distinct developmental stages during the growth season. The objective of this study was to characterize the activity and partitioning of sorbitol and sucrose catabolism within 'Encore' peach fruit to determine whether the two forms of translocated carbon play different roles in the various fruit tissues and/or stages of development. Sorbitol catabolic activity was defined as the sum of NAD-dependent sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH) and sorbitol oxidase (SOX) activities, whereas sucrose catabolic activity was defined as the sum of sucrose synthase (SS), soluble…
Almond (Prunus dulcis cv. Casteltermini) Skin Confectionery By-Products: New Opportunity for the Development of a Functional Blackberry (Rubus ulmifo…
2021
This work proposes for the first time a model for reusing almond (Prunus dulcis cv. Casteltermini from Sicily, Southern Italy) skin to formulate a new functional blackberry (Rubus ulmifolius Schott) jam. For this purpose, blackberries were analysed fresh and as jam, traditionally prepared with a minimum fruit amount of 80%. Different percentages of almond skin (20, 15, and 10% w/w) were added to jam. The phytochemical profile of enriched jam was investigated by LC-ESI/LTQOrbitrap/MS analyses. Anthocyanins, hydrolysable tannins, and triterpenoids were identified in a blackberry extract, while proanthocyanidins, flavonoids, and oxylipins were identified in an almond extract. The n-hexane extr…
Solid state 13C-NMR methodology for the cellulose composition studies of the shells of Prunus dulcis and their derived cellulosic materials.
2020
Lignocellulosic fibers and microcellulose have been obtained by simple alkaline treatment from softwood al- mond shells. In particular, the Prunus dulcis Miller (D.A.) Webb. was considered as a agro industrial waste largely available in southern Italy. The materials before and after purification have been characterized by 13C CPMAS NMR spectroscopy methodology. A proper data analysis provided the relative composition of lignin and holo- cellulose at each purification step and the results were compared with thermogravimetric analysis and FT-IR. To value the possibility of using this material in a circular economy framework, the fibrous cellulosic material was used to manufacture a handmade c…

ANTIOXIDANT COMPOUNDS AND QUALITATIVE TRAITS IN EUROPEAN (PRUNUS DOMESTICA L.) AND JAPANESE (P. TRIFLORA L.) PLUM FRUITS AS AFFECTED BY COLD STORAGE
2010
The Italian territory is rich in fruit trees germplasm and in the last years many research programs have been carried out to characterize local cultivars and accessions for deepenings about them and enhancing the market agreement too. The Sicilian plum cultivars 'Sanacore' and 'Ariddo di core' and the Piedmontese plum cultivar 'Ramassin' were studied to highlight their qualitative traits including the nutraceutical properties. Moreover, since it is important to know in which way the qualitative parameters change during the storage period one more study was carried out by storing the fruits under modified atmosphere in the Tectrol ® system. The results evidenced very interesting aspects abou…
The effect of two growth bio regulators on the physiological, phenological and qualitative parameters of peach tree production
2021
The risk that plants have not accumulated sufficient chilling units (CU) and the economic interest in anticipating flowering have led to growing scientific interest in the use of bio plant regulators to stop dormant peach trees in farms that use agronomic particulates in precision farming protocols. The trials were conducted in 2016 and 2017, on peach trees of the cultivar Maycrest, grown in a commercial orchard located in Metaponto, Basilicata (Southern Italy). A complete randomization experimental scheme was adopted; three theses (control, Fast and Regular® and Asy 23) and two different intervention periods have been provided for, the doses used have been 500g/hl for Fast & Regular® a…
Two new apricot varieties
2010
Nella and Dora are apricot seedlings recently selected by R. Chiappetta in Sicily. Their vegetative, floreal, agronomic and fruit-quality characteristics were checked for three years (2003 - 2005) in Partinico (Palermo coast area), under mild winter and spring temperatures, in comparison with Tyrinthos variety. Nella and Dora have an upright tree habit and are self-compatible. Blooming started a week earlier in Nella and Tyrinthos (end of February) and concluded in the second part of March in all varieties. Fruit set was satisfactory in all cultivars. Crop was harvested from May 25th to 30th in Dora, May 24th to 30th in Nella and May 24th to 28th in Tyrinthos. Fruit weight, as a three years…
Evaluation of Small Vase and Y-trellis Orchard Systems for Peach and Nectarine Production in Mediterranean Regions
2015
Two peach planting systems, Small Vase (SV) and Y-trellis (Y), were evaluated and compared in the Mediterranean settings of Southern Italy. The two orchards were located next to each other on relatively uniform soil and terrain, and the observations included two peach (âRich Mayâ and âSummer Richâ) and two nectarine (âBig Bangâ and âNectarossâ) cultivars. In the SV system, trees were spaced at 4.5 A 2.5 m (888 trees/ha), whereas in the Y system, trees were spaced at 5.5 A 2 m (909 trees/ha) and no canopy gap was left between rows. Yield per tree; fruit size grade; unit price of sold peaches for each size grade; materials, labor and associated costs for cultural management;…
