Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), substance use disorders, and criminality: a difficult problem with complex solutions.

2014

Abstract The association between attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and criminality has been increasingly recognized as an important societal concern. Studies conducted in different settings have revealed high rates of ADHD among adolescent offenders. The risk for criminal behavior among individuals with ADHD is increased when there is psychiatric comorbidity, particularly conduct disorder and substance use disorder. In the present report, it is aimed to systematically review the literature on the epidemiological, neurobiological, and other risk factors contributing to this association, as well as the key aspects of the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of ADHD among offende…

First-Episode Psychotic Patients Showed Longitudinal Brain Changes Using fMRI With an Emotional Auditory Paradigm

2020

[EN] Most previous longitudinal studies of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in first-episode psychosis (FEP) using cognitive paradigm task found an increased activation after antipsychotic medications. We designed an emotional auditory paradigm to explore brain activation during emotional and nonemotional word processing. This study aimed to analyze if longitudinal changes in brain fMRI BOLD activation is present in patients vs. healthy controls. A group of FEP patients (n = 34) received clinical assessment and had a fMRI scan at baseline and follow-up (average, 25-month interval). During the fMRI scan, both emotional and nonemotional words were presented as a block design. Resu…

Empirical examination of executive functioning, ADHD associated behaviors, and functional impairments in adults with persistent ADHD, remittent ADHD,…

2019

Abstract Background Previous studies suggest that childhood attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may continue in adulthood, producing adverse effects. Therefore, identifying factors that help to differentiate characteristics of ADHD persistence and remission has practical implications for evaluation and treatment. The first aim of this study was to analyze differences in executive functions (shift, working memory, inhibition, and plan/organize), symptoms associated with ADHD (inattention, hyperactivity, emotional lability, and self-concept), and functional impairments in adults with persistent ADHD (ADHD-P), with remittent ADHD (ADHD-R), and without ADHD (N-ADHD). The second aim …

The prevalence of bipolar disorders in the general population - a growing trending topic?

2015

report the first meta-analysis of theprevalence of bipolar disorder (BD) from population-based studies. Strengths of the manuscript include theuse of suitable methods of analysis, reporting both annualand lifetime prevalence rates, and providing separatedata for bipolar subtypes I and II. The latter is relevantbecause type II is not simply a milder or minor form of BD.This publication is of considerable interest, firstlybecause it confirms that the frequency of BD in thegeneral population is low and closer to the conservativeestimates of 1-2%, as suggested by historical data.

Hospitalización Domiciliaria en Salud Mental : eficacia y viabilidad

2021

2022

Duloxetine is a dual action antidepressant included in the pharmacological class of serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. Its mechanism of action makes it a drug indicated for the treatment of clinical conditions than frequently coexist and share pathophysiological pathways such as major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia, or chronic musculoskeletal pain. It is also indicated in other diseases that reduce quality of life such as chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy or stress urinary incontinence. All this with a favorable side effect profile. In this review, we will elucidate current evidences on the use of dul…

Real-World Evidence from a European Cohort Study of Patients with Treatment Resistant Depression: Healthcare Resource Utilization: Healthcare resourc…

2021

Background: Treatment resistant depression (TRD) is diagnosed when patients experiencing a major depressive episode fail to respond to ≥2 treatments. Along with substantial indirect costs, patients with TRD have higher healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) than other patients with depression. However, research on the economic impact of this HCRU, and differences according to response to treatment, is lacking. Methods: This multicenter, observational study documented HCRU among patients with TRD in European clinical practice initiating new antidepressant treatments. Data regarding access to outpatient consultations and other healthcare resources for the first 6 months, collected using a que…
