The comprehensive Open-Dialogue approach in Western Lapland: I. The incidence of non-affective psychosis and prodromal states
2011
Mental health services in a health district in Finland with a population of 72,000 were developed into a comprehensive family- and network-centered entity by giving all the psychiatric personnel training in family therapy or psychodynamic individual therapy, and by arranging a system in which all psychiatric crises were treated in a family- and network-centered manner by multidisciplinary crisis teams, mostly in the patient’s home. The system is a modification of the Need-Adapted Approach called the Open-Dialogue Approach (ODA). The changes in the incidence of first-contact non-affective psychoses and prodromal states were studied in two cities of the District, considering the five-year per…
Speechlessness, anxiety, and confusion in a teacher education student group
2017
The aim of the study was to explore the tensions, as experienced by student teachers, in a teacher education program that is based on psychodynamic theory. Previous research shows that students have had orientation problems in innovative university studies because it involves students having to take steps toward their discomfort zone. It was therefore considered important to study the mismatch or match of the training model and student experiences. The data were gathered through student interviews. The data analysis utilized a case study methodology and proceeded from thematic network analysis toward a deeper interpretation of the data. The analysis shows students struggle to understand the…
Non-pharmacological treatment of sexual problems – A review of research literature 1970–2008
2010
Summary Based on a review covering 80 research papers selected from a larger material on effect of non-pharmacological treatment of sexual problems, treatment methods and techniques for common sexual problems are presented and the treatment effects are discussed in relation to the specific problem. Treatment methods are organised according to different groups: Psychodynamic, hypnosis, behavioural, cognitive, cognitive-behavioural, educational, marital, group therapy, sex therapy and bibliotherapy. Treatment methods and techniques within each group are described and studies within each group are presented. The results show positive effect for most approaches, but to varying degree. Therapy t…
Σύμβολου: An Attempt toward the early Origins, Part 1
2013
International audience; This is the first of a two-part paper in which I would like to propose some possible hypotheses on the early origins of symbolic function, which is the most typical feature of human being, based on disavowal mechanism. Briefly recalling the main stages of the history of symbolism, it will be possible to lay out many of its theories within the framework that we wish to outline with this work, this first part of which is mainly concerned with the basic psychodynamic notion of disavowal and its possible applications, above all in regard to fetishism.
Die „Gewichtsphobie” - Ein Diskussionsbeitrag zum Problem der „atypischen” oder „nicht näher bezeichneten”Eß- und Gewichtsstörungen -
2000
A number of authors have stated that the problem of classifying patients whose diagnosis does not meet all the criteria of anorexia and bulimia nervosa has not been satisfactorily solved. The question has been asked if it is justified to regard characteristics like "weight phobia" or body image disturbance as valid diagnostic criteria. In the present study the differences observed in three groups of patients with eating and weight disorders (anorexia: n = 42; bulimia: n = 29; atypical group without "weight phobia": n = 14) were compared using the Giessen-Test. The atypical group was shown to be significantly more "tractable" on scale 2 than the main groups, which achieved a higher score on …
Psychosis, symbol, affectivity 1: etiopathogenesis and treatment through analytical psychology
2021
This is the first of two papers concerning our study into an integrated approach to psychotic disorders, conducted at the University of Palermo's Psychiatry Unit Polyclinic over approximately 15 years. Here we will explore and reflect upon the acute psychotic condition mainly from a theoretical and conceptual perspective, while in the second paper we will explore the clinical perspective. From the point of view of psychopathology, and in the light of C.G. Jung's conceptualization of analytical psychology, as well as calling on contributions from other authors from the systemic-relational and post-psychoanalytic field, we will clarify the ideas developed over these last few years by our team…
Die neurotische Depression - Eine Krankheit ohne Diagnose oder eine Diagnose ohne Glossar?/ Neurotic depression – a disease without a diagnosis or a …
2003
With the transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10 the diagnosis of neurotic depression was omitted. Freyberger showed that this diagnosis in the ICD-10 was replaced mainly by the diagnoses of dysthymia, recurrent depression and depressive episode (with this ranking of frequency). A renowned German psychiatrist criticized this change as replacing an unsubstantiated dichotomic with an unsubstantiated dimensional model. The same was the case with the change from DSM-II to DSM-III: Torgersen criticized here that the heterogeneous diagnosis of neurotic depression was basically replaced by the similarly heterogeneous diagnosis of major depression. The underlying rationale behind the omission of the tradit…
