Importance of Psychotherapy motivation in patients with somatization syndrome
2006
Abstract Low motivation for psychotherapy presents a special challenge to effective therapy in patients with multiple somatoform symptoms. As part of a controlled treatment study, the authors examined the extent to which patients’ initial level of psychotherapy motivation has an effect on long-term treatment outcome. After admission to a cognitive–behavioral treatment center, 161 inpatients with somatization syndrome were diagnosed using a structured clinical interview and completed measures of somatoform symptomatology, general psychopathology, and motivation for psychotherapy. To test the relationship between motivation and treatment outcome, the patients’ initial motivational characteris…
Are affective temperaments determinants of quality of life in euthymic patients with bipolar disorder?
2018
Background: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a disabling illness that is associated with low quality of life (QoL). This low QoL goes further than mood episodes, which suggests that stable traits, such as affective temperaments, can cause functional impairment. Objective: Our study analyses the impact of affective temperaments on the Physical Component Summary (PCS) and Mental Component Summary (MCS) of QoL in euthymic BD patients. Methods: A multicentre study was conducted in 180 euthymic BD patients and 95 healthy controls. Firstly, statistical analyses were performed to compare QoL and affective temperaments between the two groups. Secondly, Adaptive Lasso Analysis was carried out to identify th…
The impact of study design and diagnostic approach in a large multi-centre ADHD study. Part 1: ADHD symptom patterns
2011
Contains fulltext : 96439.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) BACKGROUND: The International Multi-centre ADHD Genetics (IMAGE) project with 11 participating centres from 7 European countries and Israel has collected a large behavioural and genetic database for present and future research. Behavioural data were collected from 1068 probands with the combined type of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD-CT) and 1446 'unselected' siblings. The aim was to analyse the IMAGE sample with respect to demographic features (gender, age, family status, and recruiting centres) and psychopathological characteristics (diagnostic subtype, symptom frequencies, age at symptom detection, and com…
Developmental Underpinnings of the Association of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Its Subtypes to Neuropsychological and Academic Weakne…
2005
Caron and Rutter (1) and Pennington (2) recently published excellent conceptual and methodological reviews and analyses of comorbidity in child psychopathology, and a special issue of Developmental Neuropsychology (3) reviewed attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)-learning disabilities (LD) comorbidity in particular. None of these reviews, however, focused on the association of dimensions of ADHD and cognitive development, which are included in this chapter. Moreover, relatively little empirical data exist from early development. It is very likely that language-related impairments and extreme temperament traits contribute to the emergence of developmental problems and/or the accum…
Links between adverse childhood experiences, psychopathological symptoms and recidivism risk in juvenile delinquents
2020
Research in the field of developmental psycho-criminology shows that conduct disorders and deviant behaviours are frequently associated with traumatic and adverse developmental experiences. Personality traits and psychopathological symptoms also increase the risk of criminality. However, the role of psychopathological symptoms in the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and offending has rarely been researched. The present study was designed to throw further light on these issues by analysing risk factors in a group of adolescents and young adults in a juvenile detention centre in southern Italy. Results support the idea that the accumulation of risk factors is a major factor…
Are validation scales useful for Detecting Deliberately Faked Personality Tests? A study in incarcerated populations
2012
Personality self-report questionnaires are frequently used in forensic settings to detect psychopathology, to predict recidivism, and to assess adaptability to life in prison. Although most personality questionnaires include validity or control scales, even with the scales most outcomes can be easily manipulated. The aim of this study is to analyze the utility of the control scales of the Situational Personality Questionnaire. A sample of 200 male prisoners was randomized into two groups. Both groups completed the SPQ as a part of the mandatory psychological assessment when they entered prison, and then again 8 months later. In time 2, one group received instructions to falsify the results …
The clinical trait self-criticism and its relation to psychopathology: A systematic review – Update
2019
Abstract Background Self-criticism represents a central phenomenon in a variety of mental disorders. The review looks at the recent body of literature (2012–2018) to summarize the relation of self-criticism and psychopathology beyond depression and aims at detecting how different conceptualizations of self-criticism with psychoanalytical, psychodynamic, or cognitive-evolutionary background are related to psychopathology. Furthermore, latest treatment approaches for dysfunctional forms of self-criticism are reviewed. Methods The literature research of five databases (PsycINFO, PSYNDEX, PubMed, Medline, and Cochrane Library) took place in August 2018. Inclusion criteria for studies to enter t…
Development of the insight scale for affective disorders (ISAD): modification from the scale to assess unawareness of mental disorder.
2011
Abstract Background Research on insight in patients with mood disorders has grown in recent years. Several instruments to assess insight have been used, but most of them have been specifically designed for psychosis and may not appear relevant to mood disorders. The aim of the present study is to develop a short, multidimensional, reliable and valid scale to measure insight in patients with mood disorders, based on the Amador's Scale to Assess Unawareness of Mental Disorders (SUMD). Method A Delphi method was used to facilitate expert participation and ensure face and content validity. The SUMD structure and items were used as a reference in the scale development. A new scale with 17 items …
Problems and Adaptive Functioning Reported by Adults in 17 Societies
2016
This study tested for similarities and differences across societies in self-ratings ofproblems, personal strengths, and aspects of adaptive functioning on the Adult Self-Report (ASR) for nonclinical samples of adults ages 18 to 59 in 17 societies (N 10,197). Results indicated considerable consistency across societies regarding meanratings on the ASR problem items. Most effect sizes (ESs) for societal differences inproblem scales were small (2?5%). Hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) analysesindicated that culture clusters and society accounted for small percentages of variancein Internalizing, Externalizing, and Total Problems scores, with most of the variationaccounted for by individual dif…
