Monitoring the effects of therapeutic interventions in depression through self-assessments

2021

The treatment of major psychiatric disorders is an arduous and thorny path for the patients concerned, characterized by polypharmacy, massive adverse side effects, modest prospects of success, and constantly declining response rates. The more important is the early detection of psychiatric disorders prior to the development of clinically relevant symptoms, so that people can benefit from early interventions. A well-proven approach to monitoring mental health relies on voice analysis. This method has been successfully used with psychiatric patients to ‘objectively’ document the progress of improvement or the onset of relapse. The studies with psychiatric patients over 2-4 weeks demonstrated …

A Pertinência de uma Abordagem Clínica Transcultural a Distúrbios Psicossomáticos na ilha Réunion

2018

Abstract Cultural foundations, beliefs and associated ritual practices delimit the relation to and the representation and lived experience of the body in specific ways. Language is the means through which the cultural specificity of both individual and shared mental content can be explored and worked with in therapy. This article presents beliefs about the body in a patient’s religion of origin and takes up the question of the role of the cultural dimension in psychosomatic phenomena. A case report gives indications of a novel therapeutic approach to this theme and highlights the intrinsic connection between cultural belonging and embodiment. Both the two-year long clinical intervention and…

The Mediator Role of Feelings of Guilt in the Process of Burnout and Psychosomatic Disorders: A Cross-Cultural Study

2021

Burnout was recently declared by WHO as an “occupational phenomenon” in the International Classification of Diseases 11th revision (ICD-11), recognizing burnout as a serious health issue. Earlier studies have shown that feelings of guilt appear to be involved in the burnout process. However, the exact nature of the relationships among burnout, guilt and psychosomatic disorders remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediator role of feelings of guilt in the relationship between burnout and psychosomatic disorders, and perform a cross-cultural validation of the multi-dimensional model by Gil-Monte in two samples of teachers (Portuguese vs. Spanish). The study sample…

Loss Aversion and Risk Aversion in Non-Clinical Negative Symptoms and Hypomania

2020

In the field of behavioral decision-making, “loss aversion” is a behavioral phenomenon in which individuals show a higher sensitivity to potential losses than to gains. Conversely, “risk averse” individuals have an enhanced sensitivity/aversion to options with uncertain consequences. Here we examine whether hypomania or negative symptoms predict the degree of these choice biases. We chose to study these two symptom dimensions because they present a common theme across many syndromes with compromised decision-making. In our exploratory study, we employed a non-clinical sample to dissociate the hypomanic from negative symptom dimension regarding choice behavior. We randomly selected a sample …

Seksuaalivähemmistöjen häirintä joukkueessa tai liikuntaryhmässä : henkisen pahoinvoinnin näkökulma

2018

P-110 - Gaming addiction - disturbed impulse control in internet addicts and pathological gamblers

2012

Internet Addiction (IA) is proposed to be added as a research diagnosis to the upcoming DSM-V while Pathological Gambling (PG) is proposed to be subsumed under the new section “Addiction and related disorders” as first behavioral addiction. The outpatient clinic for behavioral addiction of the clinic for psychosomatic medicine in Mainz offers counseling and treatment to patients suffering from IA and PG. Deficits in impulse control are suggested to be a key factor to addiction. Studies in PG have shown deficits in the ability to control impulses, for example in decision making, resisting temptation or behavioral inhibition. For Internet addiction previous research on impulse control is spar…
