Heterogeneity of executive functions among preschool children with psychiatric symptoms
2019
The aim of the present study was to investigate associations between internalizing and externalizing symptoms and deficits in executive functions (EF) as well as to examine the overall heterogeneity of EFs in a sample of preschool children attending a psychiatric clinic (n = 171). First, based on cut-off points signifying clinical levels of impairment on the parent-completed Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), children were assigned into groups of internalizing, externalizing, combined or mild symptoms and compared to a reference group (n = 667) with regard to day care teacher ratings of EFs on the Attention and Executive Function Rating Inventory-Preschool (ATTEX-P). Second, latent profile an…
Relationships between depressive symptoms and self-reported unintentional injuries: the cross-sectional population–based FIN-D2D survey
2012
Background There is a lack of knowledge on the influence of different levels of physical activity (PA) on unintentional injuries among those with depressive symptoms (DS). The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between PA categories and unintentional injuries among participants with and without DS based on a cross-sectional population–based FIN-D2D survey conducted in 2007. Methods Out of 4500, 2682 participants (60%) aged 45–74 years attended in this study. The unintentional injuries over the past year were captured in a questionnaire. DS were determined with the Beck Depression Inventory (≥ 10 points) and PA with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. The stati…
Employment Status and Personal Income Before and After Onset of a Severe Mental Disorder: A Case-Control Study.
2020
Objective: Individuals with severe mental disorders have an impaired ability to work and are likely to receive income transfer payments as their main source of income. However, the magnitude of this phenomenon remains unclear. Using longitudinal population cohort register data, the authors conducted a case-control study to examine the levels of employment and personal income before and after a first hospitalization for a serious mental disorder. Methods: All individuals (N=50,551) who had been hospitalized for schizophrenia, other nonaffective psychosis, or bipolar disorder in Finland between 1988 and 2015 were identified and matched with five randomly selected participants who were the sam…
Jukolan veljekset maallikkopsykiatrin vastaanotolla : ADHD-nimike ja muut tarttuvat diagnoosit Seitsemän veljeksen nykyluennassa
2022
Helsingin Sanomien julkaisemassa tietokirjassa Seitsemän miestä (2005) esitetään psykiatrisia diagnooseja Aleksis Kiven Seitsemässä veljeksessä (1870) kuvatuista henkilöistä. Tällainen diagnosoimisen tapa osallistuu kulttuurin diagnostisoitumisen prosessiin – siihen, että spesifit diagnoosinimikkeet saavat yhä keskeisemmän sijan kulttuurissa. Analysoin teokseen kirjattuja diagnosointeja kulttuurisen mielenterveystutkimuksen näkökulmasta. In this article I analyze how psychiatric diagnoses are used in the book Seitsemän miestä (The Seven Men, 2005), a nonfictional work by journalist Ilkka Malmberg. The book is published by Helsingin Sanomat, the largest subscription news-paper in Finland, an…
Henkilön psykiatria : psykiatrian dialektinen filosofia
2017
The Finnish word ’henkilö’ is difficult to translate in English as a ‘Person’, but in international plan-language, Esperanto, we can quite exactly translate it as ‘spiritulo’. The word henkilö, spiritulo, is developed in the 19th century from the ancient Finnish word ‘henki’ by the medical doctor in Jyväskylä region Wolmar Schildt-Kilpinen. He was not satisfied with the simple translation from Latin word ‘persona’ to Finnish ‘persoona’, and so via the ancient word he conceptually combined the spiritulo to the dialectical process of negation of negation of the ethnic culture – elite culture – national culture. So the spiritulo could express the community (Gemeinschaft) and common (gemein) at…
Biologia ja psykiatrian tulevaisuus : konferenssien herättämiä ajatuksia
2019
Esittelemme tässä katsauksessa vaikutelmiamme psykiatrian nykytilasta marraskuussa 2017 Madridissa järjestetyn kansainvälisen Psychiatry and Philosophy -konferenssin sekä Berliinissä syyskuussa 2018 pidetyn Qualitative Research in Mental Health -konferenssien pohjalta. Konferenssit vahvistivat näkemystä siitä, että monet ammattilaiset ovat herkkiä aistimaan pitkäaikaisen teoreettisen umpikujan. Useat esitelmöitsijät nimenomaan ilmaisivat turhautumistaan psykiatrian nykytilaan. Jose Maanmielen tutkimus tarjoaa kriittisen perspektiivin tähän konseptuaalisen sekamelskaan kohdistamalla huomion siihen seikkaan, että biologinen aspekti ymmärretään kroonisesti väärin. Umpikujasta ulospääsy vaatii …
The effect of improvisational music therapy on the treatment of depression: protocol for a randomised controlled trial
2008
Background. Music therapy is frequently offered to individuals suffering from depression. Despite the lack of research into the effects of music therapy on this population, anecdotal evidence suggests that the results are rather promising. The aim of this study is to examine whether improvisational, psychodynamically orientated music therapy in an individual setting helps reduce symptoms of depression and improve other health-related outcomes. In particular, attention will be given to mediator agents, such as musical expression and interaction in the sessions, as well as to the explanatory potential of EEG recordings in investigating emotion related music perception of individuals with depr…
Dialogue as a Response to the Psychiatrization of Society? Potentials of the Open Dialogue Approach
2021
In recent decades, the use of psychosocial and psychiatric care systems has increased worldwide. A recent article proposed the concept of psychiatrization as an explanatory framework, describing multiple processes responsible for the spread of psychiatric concepts and forms of treatment. This article aims to explore the potentials of the Open Dialogue (OD) approach for engaging in less psychiatrizing forms of psychosocial support. While OD may not be an all-encompassing solution to de-psychiatrization, this paper refers to previous research showing that OD has the potential to 1) limit the use of neuroleptics, 2), reduce the incidences of mental health problems and 3) decrease the use of ps…
Luovat terapiat ja empaattisen kohtaamisen kaipuu suomalaisten mielisairaalamuistojen valossa
2018
Tutkin suomalaisten mielisairaalamuistoja Muistoihin kaivertuneet tilat ‐hankkeessa.
