Väkivallan kieltämisestä kohti uusia toimintatapoja : psykoterapeuttinen muutos ongelmallisen kokemuksen assimilaationa parisuhdeväkivaltaan syyllist…
2011
2013
Tutkimuksessamme tarkastelimme asiakasosallistujamme kahden ongelmallisen kokemuksen assimilaation etenemistä sekä näiden toisistaan erillisinä pysyneiden prosessien vaikutusta toisiinsa. Asiakkaan ongelmallisia kokemuksia kutsuimme vanhempiteemaksi ja parisuhdeteemaksi. Lisäksi tarkastelimme, millaisia keinoja terapeutti käytti puhutellessaan asiakkaan ääniä. Tutkimme myös, eroavatko terapeutin käyttämät keinot eri ongelmallisissa kokemuksissa. Tutkimuksemme teoreettisena viitekehyksenä käytimme W. B. Stilesin assimilaatiomallia (Honos-Webb & Stiles, 1998; Stiles, 2011). Assimilaatiomalli on teoria psykologisesta muutoksesta, jossa minuuden ajatellaan rakentuvan aktiivisten äänten yhteisös…
Ongelmallisen kokemuksen assimilaatioprosessi psykoterapeuttisen muutoksen kuvaajana
2015
Results of the Jyväskylä research project on couple therapy for intimate partner violence : topics and strategies in successful therapy processes
2018
Despite controversy over the indications of couple therapy for IPV, current research has indicated some benefits. This article examines some crucial aspects when dealing with couple therapy for IPV, such as how dominance and power abuse are present, and which important issues should be taken into account during the therapeutic process and be brought up in therapeutic conversations. It also proposes strategies for therapists conducting couple therapy for IPV. Ten studies conducted within the Jyväskylä research project on couple therapy for IPV were reviewed. Findings highlighted the importance of the therapists’ awareness of the presence of violence, dominance and power during the sessions, …
The Profiles of Body Image Associate With Changes in Depression Among Participants in Dance Movement Therapy Group
2020
This mixed-methods study analyzed the body image quality of 143 patients with depression. The participants received a 20 × 75 min dance movement therapy (DMT) group treatment, sessions twice a week. Body Image Assessment (BIA) was the data collection tool, with pre-, post-, and 3-mos follow-up assessments. Pre-intervention body image quality characteristics were low energy and activity levels, discomfort, shame and disgust toward the body, tension in social interactions. On the BIA scores, a statistical method of Latent Profile Analysis was utilized to identify participant profiles in the data. The two identified profiles were participant with initial negative body image and participant wit…
Dance movement therapy in the treatment of depression : change in body image and mood - a clinical practice based study
2018
This dissertation includes four studies of the use of dance movement therapy (DMT) in a group form in the treatment of depression at a psychiatric outpatient clinic. DMT is based on exploring the embodied experience in the here and now in the encounter between patient(s), therapist and the dance/movement. DMT is a method to develop awareness of embodiment. This dissertation presents data from ten DMT groups, involving 62 patients who participated in and completed DMT groups during the years 2007-2013 at one psychiatric outpatient clinic. The age range of the participants was 21-61 years. To allow comparisons between DMT and treatment as usual (TAU), a control group of 12 patients was part o…
Dance movement therapy for depressed clients : Profiles of the level and changes in depression
2021
This research identified participant profiles in level and changes in depression among working age (18–64 years old) clients (N = 137) diagnosed with depression, who participated in a 20-session dance movement therapy (DMT) intervention. Using Latent Profile Analysis Mild, sharply reducing depression (9%), Mild, reducing depression (58%) and Severe, reducing depression (33%) profiles were established, using Beck Depression Inventory scores gathered at pre-intervention, post-intervention, and follow-up points. At the pre-intervention point, being in full-time work was related to the Mild, sharply reducing depression profile. Being on a disability pension, having a history of one's own or a c…

Music therapeutic emotional processing (MEP): Expression, awareness, and pain predict therapeutic outcome
2022
Successful emotional processing is pivotal for the therapeutic change, and music can support emotional processing. However, we know little on how music-based emotional processing actually predicts clinical outcomes. This study investigated music therapeutic emotional processing (MEP) as a predictor of therapeutic outcome in treatment for depression. Data consisted of self-reports of 64 clients (age range 19–57, 74% female) from a clinical trial (12 sessions) of integrative improvisational music therapy (IIMT). A 19-item MEP questionnaire was developed for assessing clients’ experiences after sessions. Emergent MEP factors were correlated with clients’ perceptions of the therapeutic value o…
On Heidegger’s Sofa: Some Remarks on Psychotherapy from Historical and Philosophical Points of View
2019
AbstractOur starting point in this article is that the question of the essence of psychotherapy has to some extent been neglected. Its medical context has strengthened the tendency to interpret psychotherapy in general from a technical and overtly rationalistic standpoint. Instead, we would underline the importance of the philosophical and historical roots of all psychotherapies. In our view, it is imperative to acknowledge the antirationalistic underpinnings that have always informed the discipline. We show how speculative mysticism and the late philosophy of Martin Heidegger have proved to be indispensable tools in setting psychotherapies in their philosophical and historical context. Rob…
