The World Hobbit Project in Finland : Audience responses and transmedial user practices

2016

This article examines audience engagement with The Hobbit fantasy film trilogy as a participatory and transmedial experience. To do so, we use the data collected by The World Hobbit Project in order to investigate the transmedial user practices of the Finnish audience of the trilogy. We will, firstly, look at what kinds of transmedial user practices – and transmedia users – emerge from our data. Secondly, we will ask the following questions: How do transmedia users receive and experience the films? What are the meanings assigned to The Hobbit films and the fantasy texts and user practices related to them, and what do these meanings tell of the broader meanings and uses of fantasy? Doing so,…

Photokinetic examination of (Z,E,E)-4,4′-distyrylazobenzene

1995

Abstract 4,4′-Distyrylazobenzenes demonstrate a photokinetic equilibrium and a superimposed thermal backward reaction in which the absorption coefficient of one of the partners in the equilibrium is principally unknown. Using the dependence of the photostationary state on the irradiation intensity, the photochemical quantum yields ϕ 1 A and ϕ 2 B were determined, as well as the thermal rate constant k , as a function of the irradiation and observation wavelengths. Experimental difficulties and the wavelength dependence of ϕ 1 A and ϕ 2 B are discussed.

Recent studies on extracellular RNA raised awareness that extracellular vesicles (EVs) isolated from cultured cells may co-purify RNAs derived from media supplements such as fetal bovine serum (FBS) confounding EV-associated RNA. Defined culture media supplemented with a range of nutrient components provide an alternative to FBS addition and allow EV-collection under full medium conditions avoiding starvation and cell stress during the collection period. However, the potential contribution of serum-free media supplements to EV-RNA contamination has remained elusive and has never been assessed. Here, we report that RNA isolated from EVs harvested from cells under serum-replacement conditions…

Neuromuscular and cardiovascular adaptations during concurrent strength and endurance training in untrained men.

2012

This study examined the effects of concurrent strength and endurance training on neuromuscular and endurance characteristics compared to strength or endurance training alone. Previously untrained men were divided into strength (S: n=16), endurance (E: n=11) or concurrent strength and endurance (SE: n=11) training groups. S and E trained 2 times and SE 2 + 2 times a week for strength and endurance during the 21-week period. Maximal unilateral isometric and bilateral concentric forces of leg muscles increased similarly in S and SE by 20-28% (p<0.01) and improvements in isometric forces were accompanied by increases (p<0.05) of maximal muscle activation. Rate of force development of isometric …

Construction and expression of a dual vector for chemo-enzymatic synthesis of plant indole alkaloids inEscherichia coli

2010

A dual vector (pQE-70-STR1-SG) containing coding regions of strictosidine synthase (STR1, EC 4.3.3.2) and strictosidine glucosidase (SG, EC 3.2.1.105) from the Indian medicinal plant Rauvolfia serpentina was constructed. Functional expression of the vector in Escherichia coli cells (M15 strain) was proven by isolation of prepurified enzyme extracts, which show both STR1 and SG activities. Incubation of the enzyme in the presence of tryptamine and secologanin delivered the indole alkaloid cathenamine, demonstrating functional co-expression of both STR1- and SG-cDNAs. Cathenamine reduction by sodium borohydride leading to tetrahydroalstonine revealed the chemo-enzymatic indole alkaloid synthe…

Melatonin and phytomelatonin: Chemistry, biosynthesis, metabolism, distribution and bioactivity in plants and animals—an overview

2021

Melatonin is a ubiquitous indolamine, largely investigated for its key role in the regulation of several physiological processes in both animals and plants. In the last century, it was reported that this molecule may be produced in high concentrations by several species belonging to the plant kingdom and stored in specialized tissues. In this review, the main information related to the chemistry of melatonin and its metabolism has been summarized. Furthermore, the biosynthetic pathway characteristics of animal and plant cells have been compared, and the main differences between the two systems highlighted. Additionally, in order to investigate the distribution of this indolamine in the plan…

Application of the Health Action Process Approach to Social Distancing Behavior During COVID‐19

2020

Author(s): Hamilton, Kyra; Smith, Stephanie R; Keech, Jacob J; Moyers, Susette A; Hagger, Martin S | Abstract: BackgroundThis study examined the social cognition determinants of social distancing behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic in samples from Australia and the US guided by the health action process approach (HAPA).MethodsParticipants (Australia: Nn=n495, 50.1% women; US: Nn=n701, 48.9% women) completed HAPA social cognition constructs at an initial time-point (T1), and one week later (T2) self-reported their social distancing behavior.ResultsSingle-indicator structural equation models that excluded and included past behavior exhibited adequate fit with the data.
