Examining the relationship between public speaking anxiety, distress tolerance and psychological flexibility

2020

Public speaking is an important skill for university students to learn and practice as they progress through education and into their careers. However, individuals often avoid facing public speaking, as they lack the skills to cope with the anxiety that arises when speaking in front of others. The current study aimed to investigate the relationship between public speaking anxiety, distress tolerance, and psychological flexibility. A sample of 95 college students completed psychological flexibility measures and self-ratings of public speaking anxiety before and after a public speaking challenge. A behavioral index of public speaking distress tolerance (i.e., speech duration) was also recorde…

Coherence between brain activation and speech envelope at word and sentence levels showed age-related differences in low frequency bands

2021

Abstract Speech perception is dynamic and shows changes across development. In parallel, functional differences in brain development over time have been well documented and these differences may interact with changes in speech perception during infancy and childhood. Further, there is evidence that the two hemispheres contribute unequally to speech segmentation at the sentence and phonemic levels. To disentangle those contributions, we studied the cortical tracking of various sized units of speech that are crucial for spoken language processing in children (4.7–9.3 years old, N = 34) and adults (N = 19). We measured participants’ magnetoencephalogram (MEG) responses to syllables, words, and…

Participation in sociolinguistic research

2022

Involving speakers in research on their linguistic practices has been at the core of sociolinguistics since the inception of the field. In contrast to social sciences, however, sociolinguists have rarely addressed the issues surrounding the participation of those involved and engaged in the research process. This paper aims at reviewing the state of the art and outlining critical dimensions and aspects with relation to participation. We explore previous studies and study designs with the help of the following questions: Who has been involved? How and with what impact have stakeholders participated in different strands of sociolinguistic research? Current developments are presented and revie…

School-entry language outcomes in late talkers with and without a family risk of dyslexia.

2020

Children with familial risk (FR) of dyslexia and children with early language delay are known to be at risk for later language and literacy difficulties. However, research addressing long‐term outcomes in children with both risk factors is scarce. This study tracked FR and No‐FR children identified as late talkers at 2 years of age and reports development from 4;6 through 6 years. We examined the possible effects of FR‐status and late talking (LT) status, respectively, on language skills at school entry, and whether FR‐status moderated the associations between 4;6‐year and 6‐year language scores. Results indicated an effect of LT status on language at both ages, while FR status affected lan…

Spoken Language Development and the Challenge of Skill Integration

2019

The development of phonological awareness, the knowledge of the structural combinatoriality of a language, has been widely investigated in relation to reading (dis)ability across languages. However, the extent to which knowledge of phonemic units may interact with spoken language organization in (transparent) alphabetical languages has hardly been investigated. The present study examined whether phonemic awareness correlates with coarticulation degree, commonly used as a metric for estimating the size of children's production units. A speech production task was designed to test for developmental differences in intra-syllabic coarticulation degree in 41 German children from 4 to 7 years of a…

Auditory P3a response to native and foreign speech in children with or without attentional deficit

2023

The aim of this study was to investigate the attentional mechanism in speech processing of native and foreign language in children with and without attentional deficit. For this purpose, the P3a component, cognitive neuromarker of the attentional processes, was investigated in a two-sequence two-deviant oddball paradigm using Finnish and English speech items via event-related potentials (ERP) technique. The difference waves reflected the temporal brain dynamics of the P3a response in native and foreign language contexts. Cluster-based permutation tests evaluated the group differences over the P3a time window. A correlation analysis was conducted between the P3a response and the attention sc…

•Eron jälkeistä yhteisvanhemmuutta on tutkittu toistaiseksi Suomessa vähän.

Politicisation as a Speech Act: A Repertoire for Analysing Politicisation in Parliamentary Plenary Debates

2021

This chapter analyses the actual speech acts of politicisation among parliamentarians, which also makes it possible to set the current debates among European Union (EU) scholars in a wider context. My aim is to sketch a scheme for distinguishing different aspects of politicisation, referring to concepts of politics (sphere or activity and its specific aspects), to the politicisation of topics or persons, to its time dimensions (past, present, and future), to different activities of politicisation (adversaries, unintended changes, the actors themselves), as well as to opposing evaluations of politicisation. The data set consists of the plenary debates of the UK House of Commons, the (West) G…

Discriminatory Brain Processes of Native and Foreign Language in Children with and without Reading Difficulties

2022

The association between impaired speech perception and reading difficulty has been well established in native language processing, as can be observed from brain activity. However, there has been scarce investigation of whether this association extends to brain activity during foreign language processing. The relationship between reading skills and neuronal speech representation of foreign language remains unclear. In the present study, we used event-related potentials (ERPs) with high-density EEG to investigate this question. Eleven- to 13-year-old children typically developed (CTR) or with reading difficulties (RD) were tested via a passive auditory oddball paradigm containing native (Finn…

Miksi englannin kieli ei taivu?

2016

”Osaan hyvin englannin kieliopin, rakenteen ja sanaston. Kuuntelemisessa ja lukemisessa ei ole mitään ongelmia, mut kun pitäis puhua, niin sanat ei vaan tule ulos…”. Miksi englannin puhumistilanteessa tuntuu tulevan vastaan kynnys? Tämä artikkeli vastaa kysymykseen esittelemällä päättötyötä, jossa tutkittiin englannin kielen puhumisessa koettujen ongelmien syitä.
