In recent decades, Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst.) forests of the High Tatra Mountains have suffered unprecedented tree mortality caused by European spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus L.). Analysis of the spatiotemporal pattern of bark beetle outbreaks across the landscape in consecutive years can provide new insights into the population dynamics of tree-killing insects. In order to achieve the goals of carbon (C) neutrality within next 20 year, municipalities worldwide need to increasingly apply negative emission technologies. We focus on the main principles of urban demonstration areas using biochars for C sequestration and explore the lessons learned from a co-creation process of one such park, Hyväntoivonpuisto in Helsinki, Finland. Tämä pro gradu -tutkielma käsittelee Keski-Suomen Emäntäkoulun historiallista puutarhaa ja puistomaista ympäristöä. Emäntäkoulu perustettiin Mankolan tilalle lähelle Jyväskylän keskustaa, ja maataloushallituksen arkkitehti Jalmari Peltosen suunnittelema koulurakennus valmistui vuonna 1932. Koulussa opiskeltiin monipuolisia talouden- ja kodinhoidon töitä, joiden katsottiin kuluvan maalaistalon emännälle. Emäntäkouluun kuului laaja koulupuutarha, jolla oli tärkeä asema opetuksessa ja sisäoppilaitoksen ruokatalouden ylläpitämisessä. Kansallispuistojen perustaminen on keskeinen osa luonnonsuojelun historiaa Suomessa. Tarkoituksenani on selvittää kansallispuistojen kehitystä ja erityisesti niiden perustamisprosessia Keski-Suomessa. Tutkimuksessa keskitytään Pyhä-Häkin, Salamajärven, Isojärven ja Leivonmäen kansallispuistoihin. This article studies the history of playgrounds in Finland and focuses on the emergence and implementation of the objectives of the international playground movement in the early twentieth century. Specifically, it examines the relations between supervised playgrounds, women’s emancipation, child welfare policies, and political discussion on social class. In doing so, the article illustrates the transnational circulation and implementation of early twentieth century “child-saving” ideas, such as the playground reform.
