Carthage's military installations of the First Punic War on Monte Pellegrino (Palermo)

2019

The excavation in the park of Villa Belmonte (Monte Pellegrino, Palermo) has brought to light several warehouses, made with a “pseudo-frame” technique, probably with a straw roof, used for the storage of foodstuffs, given the large quantity of Punic-type amphorae found in situ, datable to around the middle of the third century BC. In addition, a section of road - about 3 m wide that proceeds in the direction of WNW- ESE, consisting of two layers of use - has been intercepted. We believe to have tracked down part of a strategic/military station used by the Carthaginian army during the crucial years of the First Punic War.

Comparative morphometrics of sharpsnout seabream (Diplodus puntazzo Cetti, 1777), reared in different conditions

1999

The same genetic stock of sharpsnout seabream (Diplodus puntazzo), cultured in different conditions (lot A, monoculture tank; lot B, monoculture offshore cage; lot C, polyculture tank), was analysed using geometric morphometrics in order to detect changes in shape. Rearing in the offshore cage (lot B) had a significant effect on shape variation when compared to rearing in the two enclosed tanks (A and C). Fish from the tanks show a higher frequency (43.7% in lot A and 37.5% in lot C) of the so-called ‘goitred’ and ‘dorsal flat’ forms, their deformations shown by displacements in the corresponding landmarks of the infraopercular and dorsal areas. In contrast, the so-called ‘belly’ fish were …

Acetaldehyde and Motivation

2019

Abstract Acetaldehyde contributes to alcohol’s neuroactive effects through its own motivational properties. This chapter gathers current evidence on acetaldehyde psychoactive action, focusing on behavioral investigations able to unveil acetaldehyde rewarding effects and their pharmacological modulation in vivo. Acetaldehyde induces conditioned place preference for paired environment and cues and is dose-dependently self-administered in a two-bottle choice drinking paradigm. Acetaldehyde’s motivational properties are further highlighted by operant paradigms tailored to model several addiction-like behaviors, such as induction and maintenance of operant responding, drug-seeking in extinction,…

Determining suitable fish to monitor plastic ingestion trends in the Mediterranean Sea

2019

The presence of marine litter is a complex, yet persistent, threat to the health and biodiversity of the marine environment, and plastic is the most abundant, and ubiquitous type of marine litter. To monitor the level of plastic waste in an area, and the prospect of it entering the food chain, bioindicator species are used extensively throughout Northern European Seas, however due to their distribution ranges many are not applicable to the Mediterranean Sea. Guidance published for the Marine Strategy Framework Directive suggests that the contents of fish stomachs may be analyzed to determine trends of marine plastic ingestion. In order to equate transnational trends in marine plastic ingest…

Respiratory proteins in Sipunculus nudus--implications for phylogeny and evolution of the hemerythrin family.

2009

Three major classes of respiratory proteins are known, hemoglobin, molluscan and arthropod hemocyanin, and hemerythrin (Hr). Similar to hemoglobin, respiratory Hr is packed into erythrocytes floating in the coelomic fluid and is only known from sipunculids, brachiopods, and priapulids. Owing to this scattered distribution, the presence of Hr is generally assumed to be the plesiomorphic condition without phylogenetic importance. By sequencing 2000 Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs) from Sipunculus nudus, we found 75 Hr-coding ESTs assembled to 20 cDNA contigs classified as four distinct Hr isoforms: three polymeric Hrs (subunit A, A', and B) and the monomeric myo-hemerythrin (myoHr). Phylogeneti…

The effects of collaboration and punishment on prospective memory performance in a group setting

2020

Contains fulltext : 225210.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) Remembering to perform a delayed intention is termed prospective memory (PM). Often delayed intentions are shared by more than one person; however, there is a dearth of studies examining PM in social settings. We aimed to investigate whether the potential consequences of one's behavior across diverse group settings influence PM performance in event- and time-based tasks. A total of 207 participants were randomly allocated to either an individual, collaborative, or collaborative plus penalty motivation condition and were tested in a 2- or 3-person setting. For the time-based PM task, participants responded less timely in the…

Matricu spēļu jutīguma analīze

2016

The a…
