The very high mortality rate of gliomas reflects the unmet therapeutic need associated with this type of brain tumor. We have discovered that the plasma membrane fulfills a critical role in the propagation of tumorigenic signals, whereby changes in membrane lipid content can either activate or silence relevant pathways. We have designed a synthetic fatty acid, 2-hydroxyoleic acid (2OHOA), that specifically activates sphingomyelin synthase (SGMS), thereby modifying the lipid content of cancer cell membranes and restoring lipid levels to those found in normal cells. 7-Ketocholesterol (7-KC)-induced apoptosis of macrophages is considered a key event in the development of human atheromas. In the present study, the effect of indicaxanthin (Ind), a bioactive pigment from cactus pear fruit, on 7-KC-induced apoptosis of human monocyte/macrophage THP-1 cells was investigated. A pathophysiological condition was simulated by using amounts of 7-KC that can be reached in human atheromatous plaque. Ind was assayed within a micromolar concentration range, consistent with its plasma level after dietary supplementation with cactus pear fruit. En este trabajo se presenta una revisión del estado de la cuestión acerca de los métodos para determinar estándares en pruebas de referencia criterial. Se analiza el concepto de estándar, sus componentes y los problemas implicados en las tareas de juicio en estos métodos. Se revisan los procedimientos para diseñar descriptores de estándares y los métodos para identificar puntuaciones de corte.

espanolCaso clinico: Mujer de 65 anos, diagnosticada de ojo seco, acude por aparicion de tumoracion en canto interno con sensacion de cuerpo extrano. Tres anos antes se le habian implantado tapones lagrimales SmartPlug en ambos puntos lagrimales inferiores. Se aprecio un granuloma en el punto lagrimal inferior izquierdo que se extirpo. Dos semanas despues presento una recidiva lo que obligo a extraer el implante quedandose desde entonces asintomatica. Discusion: Estamos ante un granuloma piogeno en un implante punctal SMART PLUG, complicacion descrita clasicamente con los implantes de silicona, debido posiblemente a la irritacion cronica de los detritus acumulados. Regularity and punctuality are two very important measures for evaluating the quality of a public transport system. Several indicators can be used to estimate them, each with advantages and disadvantages. The paper comparatively describes a series of such indicators and presents a study conducted for two public transport lines in Sibiu, Romania. The study shows how, depending on the indicators used, the results show the influence of different factors.

The aim of this paper is to give a rapid and concise guide for the diagnostic procedures frequently used in internist's clinical practice. Thoracentesis, paracentesis and arthrocentesis were analyzed as regards to indications, contraindications, procedure of execution and interpretation of findings. Addressed to the young physician, the present paper could also be useful as a rapid guide for the experienced physician which does not frequently use these procedures.
