Embodied graffiti and street art research

Graffiti and street art research (GSAR) has become more acknowledged within the academic discourse; however, it has much to gain from theorising its methodological aspects. As a multidisciplinary field, GSAR has mostly used qualitative research methods, exploring urban space through methods that range from visual recordings to ethnography, emphasising the researchers’ reflexivity. This qualitative approach has, however, paid little attention to the role of embodied practices. In this paper we discuss how embodied methodologies provide multisensory research results where the experienced moments, the participant’s and researcher’s senses, cognition and mobility in urban spaces are connected.…

AbstractThis chapter discusses Finnish quality evaluation in comprehensive education, recognising that it frequently differs from that used by the Global Education Reform Movement (GERM) in most countries. Instead of high-stakes testing of pupil achievement, monitoring or school inspection, Finnish quality evaluation (QE) rests mainly on sample-based national testing and self-evaluations conducted in schools and municipalities. AbstractFinland has, rather successfully, promoted an image of itself as a model of educational excellence and linguistic equity. This chapter problematises this image by analysing Finnish language education policies at the comprehensive school level. For our analysis we use a three-fold understanding of access as; (a) having the opportunity to participate in language education (getting in); (b) participating in education that is meaningful and effective for the pupil (getting it); and (c) receiving credentials that are societally legitimate and valuable assets (getting out). AbstractAlthough Finland still has a relatively low proportion of students with a migrant background, it has not been able to ensure that immigrants and their descendants have equal educational opportunities. Education could enhance integration but migrant backgrounds have a persistent impact. Typhlodromips jurmoensis ; (Acari: Mesostigmata: Amblyseiinae), a new species from the archipelago of SW Finland

A new species belonging to the genus Typhloromips De Leon, 1965 is described. It was collected from Calluna moorland soil on Jurmo, a remote island in the SW archipelago of Finland. Typhlodromips herbarius (Wainstein, 1960) is considered a senior synonym of T.tenuis (Westerboer, 1963), syn.n. A key is given to related species with a similar spermathecal structure. peerReviewed

Muut tutkimuskysymykseni ovat millaisena ympäristöesteettisenä kaupunkitilana kohderyhmän jäsenet kokivat kaupunkitilan kaupunkitaiteen kontekstissa ja kenelle kohderyhmä koki kaupunkitilan kuuluvan. Oletukseni oli, että kohderyhmän mielikuvat kaupunkitiloista voivat muuttua, kun kaupunkitilaa koetaan ja tulkitaan uuden julkisen taiteen kontekstissa. Tämän tutkielman tarkoitus on selvittää, millaisia ovat nuorten hengailupaikat vantaalaisessa Martinlaakson lähiössä. Tehtävänä on tarkastella hengailupaikkojen ominaisuuksia nuorten, asukkaiden ja tilan näkökulmasta. Tutkielma sijoittuu kaupunkitutkimuksen ja maantieteellisen nuoruudentutkimuksen kentälle ja on otteeltaan laadullinen. Tutkielman teoreettinen viitekehys tulee ympäristöpsykologian puolelta ja sen keskeisin käsite on tarjouma (ks. Gibson 1979). Analyysissa käytetään apuna Marketta Kytän (2003) kehittämään nelikenttää lapsiystävällisistä ympäristöistä. Tutkimukseni käsittelee kuopiolaista graffitia ja sen ilmenemismuotoja Kuopiossa. Lähestyn graffitia paikan ja teoksen näkökulmista. Selvitän, mitä paikat merkitsevät graffitille, ja miten ne vaikuttavat sen luonteeseen. Tarkastelen alueen graffitimaalausten tyylillisiä ratkaisuja etsien viitteitä vaikutteista tai teosten kuulumisesta tiettyihin graffitimaalauksen tyylisuuntiin. Tutkimukseni taustalla on ajatus alueen graffitin perifeerisestä luonteesta, ja sen mahdollisesta ilmenemisestä omalaatuisena ilmaisuna tai graffitiin liittyvän koodiston poikkeavuuksina.
