Monocular versus binocular pupillometry.

2004

Purpose To quantify differences between monocular and binocular pupil size measurement under scotopic and mesopic conditions. Setting Department of Ophthalmology, Johannes Gutenberg-University, and Department of Medical Biometry, Epidemiology and Informatics, University of Mainz, Mainz, Germany. Methods Computerized dynamic pupillometry (P2000 SA, Procyon Instruments Ltd.) was used at 3 illumination levels: scotopic at 0.03 lux, mesopic low at 0.82 lux, and mesopic high at 6.4 lux. One hundred forty eyes of 70 healthy volunteers without ocular pathology were examined. The subjects were divided into 2 groups. In the first group, the pupil diameter was measured binocularly first. In the secon…

The effect of simulated normal and amblyopic higher-order aberrations on visual performance.

2012

Purpose To study the effect of simulated amblyopic and normal higher-order aberrations on visual performance of normal eyes. Methods To assess visual function, an adaptive optics visual simulator was used to compensate volunteers' ocular aberrations and simulate the wavefront aberration patterns found in healthy and amblyopic eyes in 7 healthy individuals. Visual acuity for high (100%), medium (50%), and low (10%) contrast and contrast sensitivity at 10, 20, and 25 cycles per degree (cpd) were measured after simulation of both pattern aberrations. The modulation transfer function and the point spread function were computed based on the aberration data. All measures were taken for 3 and 5.5 …

Pasqualino Contemporaneo

2018

A Museum that tells stories. A Museum that houses ideas – not only things. A Museum that, going beyond the simple act of collecting, acquires a narrative dimension and turns into a meta-narrative, into an “Open Work”. This performance museum, which is the Antonio Pasqualino International Puppet Museum, focuses on narration and trans- forms itself into a mnestic image, becomes a tool for intercultural mediation through the use of different artistic languages. This long tradition of study and research is the frame of the Pasqualino Museum’s contemporary art projects realized in the past ten years.

Special Uses of Viscoelastics

2000

The possibilities of viscoelastic use in phacoemulsification will be outlined in the following figures. Many ophthalmic surgeons apply viscoelastic substances in capsulorhexis to achieve a deep anterior chamber and extend the pupillary space (with a small pupil). Care must be taken during injection so that aqueous is permitted to flow out. When using a paracentesis to inject viscoelastic (Fig. 59), it must be big enough to allow aqueous outflow. For complete aqueous exchange in the anterior chamber, it is advisable to inject the viscoelastic into the opposite chamber angle.

Enhancer trap infidelity in Drosophila optomotor-blind

2013

Reporter gene activity in enhancer trap lines is often implicitly assumed to mirror quite faithfully the endogenous expression of the "trapped" gene, even though there are numerous examples of enhancer trap infidelity. optomotor-blind (omb) is a 160 kb gene in which 16 independent P-element enhancer trap insertions of three different types have been mapped in a range of more than 60 kb. We have determined the expression pattern of these elements in wing, eye-antennal and leg imaginal discs as well as in the pupal tergites. We noted that one pGawB insertion (omb (P4) ) selectively failed to report parts of the omb pattern even though the missing pattern elements were apparent in all other 15…

Image quality with multifocal intraocular lenses and the effect of pupil size

2007

Purpose To analyze the image quality with a refractive and 2 hybrid refractive–diffractive multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) in vitro to determine the IOL modulation transfer function (MTF) following the EN-ISO international standard for distance and near vision and to study the IOLs' behavior with different pupil sizes. Setting Fundacion Oftalmologica del Mediterraneo, Valencia, Spain. Methods This study evaluated 4 IOLs: the hybrid refractive–diffractive AcrySof ReSTOR SN60D3 (Alcon) and Tecnis ZM900 (AMO), the refractive ReZoom NXG (AMO), and the monofocal AcrySof SN60WF (Alcon). The MTF was calculated from the cross-line spread function recorded with the OPAL Vector System (Image Sci…

Imaging Quality of Bifocal Piggyback Intraocular Lens versus ReSTOR and TECNIS Multifocal Lenses

2009

Purpose The imaging quality provided by a piggyback integrated by a monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) + a bifocal IOL of zero power and +3.75 diopters of addition is compared with the optics quality of a simple multifocal IOL of the same power and addition. Methods The imaging quality was evaluated by determining the modulation transfer function (MTF), using an artificial eye simulating in vivo conditions of the anterior chamber, including an artificial cornea and a wet cell containing physiologic solution where the IOL was positioned. The MTFs of the bifocal piggyback for near and distance vision were measured, with pupil diameters of 3 and 5 mm, and compared with the MTFs of an equivalent …

Molecular detection of Bartonella spp. in deer ked pupae, adult keds and moose blood in Finland

2014

SUMMARYThe deer ked (Lipoptena cervi) is a haematophagous ectoparasite of cervids that harbours haemotrophic Bartonella. A prerequisite for the vector competence of the deer ked is the vertical transmission of the pathogen from the mother to its progeny and transstadial transmission from pupa to winged adult. We screened 1154 pupae and 59 pools of winged adult deer keds from different areas in Finland for Bartonella DNA using PCR. Altogether 13 pupa samples and one winged adult deer ked were positive for the presence of Bartonella DNA. The amplified sequences were closely related to either B. schoenbuchensis or B. bovis. The same lineages were identified in eight blood samples collected fro…

Mammary pheromone-induced odour learning influences sucking behaviour and milk intake in the newborn rabbit

2016

Newborn rabbits, Oryctolagus cuniculus, locate their mother's nipples through typical orocephalic movements elicited by odour stimuli, in particular by the mammary pheromone (MP). The MP also promotes neonatal odour learning: after single pairing with the MP, an initially neutral odorant becomes able to elicit sucking-related head-searching/oral-grasping movements. However, the behavioural significance of the MP-induced odour learning remains poorly understood. We carried out three experiments to explore its influence on milk intake and compare its consequences with those resulting from nursing-induced conditioning. First, pups conditioned to an odorant by pairing with the MP on postnatal d…
