Alkoholinkäyttö EVI-hankkeeseen osallistuneilla keskisuomalaisilla
2012
The sculpture of tick-borne diseases media coverage in the United States and China
2017
Media’s ability to enhance the salience of certain topics for the public and affect governmental policy-setting processes is widely recognized. This is particularly evident in health communication, where newspapers are one of the most important sources of health information. This study compares media depictions of tick-borne disease in the United States and China, attempting to enhance newspaper influence in health information delivery in both countries. The United States and China are experiencing an increase in tick-borne diseases and have vastly different media landscapes. To investigate US and Chinese newspaper coverage of tick-borne diseases, a content analysis was conducted of four …
Verifying the predicted risk of extinction based on ecological characteristics
2021
Red List status of species should reflect species extinction risk. Because data are limited and species response has a time lag, species may be threatened by extinction even if they are not Red‐Listed. The ability to predict species risk of extinction from ecological characteristics holds promises for proactively targeting conservation measures to species at high risk. In 2005, the risk of extinction from ecological characteristics was predicted for 81 species of Finnish butterflies. Now, after 15 years and two additional national Red List assessments, these predictions are verified. Species with a higher risk of extinction according to the original ecological extinction risk rank (EERR) ha…
Torrefioimalla käsitellyn puun varastoinnissa liukenevat yhdisteet
2016
Torrefiointi on uusi tapa käsitellä biomassaa. Torrefioitua biomassaa voidaan käyttää korvaaman fossiilisia polttoaineita korkealaatuista polttoainetta vaativissa voimalaitoksissa, joissa perinteisten biopolttoaineiden laatu ei riitä. Torrefiointi lisää biomassan energiatiheyttä ja tehollista lämpöarvoa merkittävästi. Kasvanut energiatiheys alentaa myös kuljetuskustannuksia verrattuna muihin biopolttoaineisiin. Tämän vuoksi torrefoidusta biomassasta, erityisesti torrefioiduista puupelleteistä on kaavailtu kivihiilen korvaavaa polttoainetta pölypolttolaitoksissa. Torrefioitujen puupellettien varastoitavuuden ja kosteuden keston oletetaan olevan tavallisia puupellettejä parempi, jolloin niitä…

Alarmist by bad design: Strongly popularized unsubstantiated claims undermine credibility of conservation science
2019
“Unless we change our ways of producing food, insects as a whole will go down the path of extinction in a few decades.” or “Our work reveals dramatic rates of decline that may lead to the extinction of 40% of the world's insect species over the next few decades.” These are verbatim conclusions of the recent paper by Sánchez-Bayoa and Wyckhuys (2019) in Biological Conservation. Because of fundamental methodological flaws, their conclusions are unsubstantiated. Like noted by The Guardian, the conclusions of the paper were set out in unusually forceful terms for a peer-reviewed scientific paper. The current case…
Applicability of hybrid aspen (Populus tremula L. × P. tremuloides Michx.) bark extract as a precursor of rigid carbon foam and activated carbon
2023
Hybrid aspens have long attracted scientific interest, but the research on their use as feedstocks for chemical applications are still very limited. The bark biomass of the poplar species contains many valuable extractives that can be utilized as value-added products. This paper examines the applicability of hybrid aspen (Populus tremula L. × P. tremuloides Michx.) bark extract as a precursor of rigid carbon foam and activated carbon. To explore this, the study considers 1) the basic chemical composition of the bark in terms of added value potential, 2) the basic chemical composition of the bark extract and the effect of its pretreatment on the extract composition, 3) the production of rigi…
Behaviour of Extractives in Norway Spruce (Picea abies) Bark during Pile Storage
2022
The current practices regarding the procurement chain of forest industry sidestreams, such as conifer bark, do not always lead to optimal conditions for preserving individual chemical compounds. This study investigates the standard way of storing bark in large piles in an open area. We mainly focus on the degradation of the most essential hydrophilic and hydrophobic extractives and carbohydrates. First, two large 450 m3 piles of bark from Norway spruce (Picea abies) were formed, one of which was covered with snow. The degradation of the bark extractives was monitored for 24 weeks. Samples were taken from the middle, side and top of the pile. Each sample was extracted at 120 °C with both n-h…
