Qualitative analysis of determinants of measles, mumps, rubella vaccine uptake in European parents

2015

Background Parental concerns about measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccination negatively influence decision to vaccinate their children, this leading to the recently reported vaccine coverage drop in Europe. The ESCULAPIO project, funded by the Italian National Centre for Disease Prevention and Control of the Ministry of Health (CCM), is investigating the main factors underlying decisions on vaccinations, in order to implement targeted campaigns and plan effective strategies. Methods A systematic literature review was carried out on studies describing the determinants underlying MMR vaccination uptake in European parents. Results A total of 45 studies were included in the analysis. The mo…

Pedagogical approaches to surface phenomena in liquids: Investigation-based laboratory and modelling activities to improve students’ learning

2023

Paperclips can float on water, mercury drops do not spread on solid surfaces, and fluids can flow against gravity in capillary tubes. Surface tension can be used to explain these phenomena that are macroscopic manifestations of microscopic molecular interactions. At both school and university levels, surface phenomena are introduced through traditional macroscopic or microscopic approaches. However, since explanations based on microscopic models are often in conflict with common macroscopic interpretations, the traditional teaching of the basic concepts related to surface phenomena can be unclear and can prevent students from an effective understanding of the topic. However, since surface p…

Photoionization of Polarized Atoms Applications to Free Atoms and Ferromagnets

1996

Discussion of connections between different phenomena observed in seemingly different situations usually helps to better understanding of the physics of underlying processes. Some time ago Farago1 discussed analogies and contrasts between light polarization and electron spin polarization. He showed that though in both cases the same Stokes vector formalism2 can be applied, the analogies between them have rather limited validity. We will discuss here the applicability of equations derived for the description of photoionization of free polarized atoms3,4 to photoemission from ferromagnets5,6. We show that qualitative features of photoemission from core levels of ferromagnets are correctly rep…

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in indoor dust matter of Palermo (Italy) area: Extraction, GC–MS analysis, distribution and sources

2008

Abstract Studies on indoor pollution are important since people spend more than 80% of their time indoor environments. In this work the method for PAHs analysis in indoor dust (used as passive sampler) and the results relative to samples collected in the area of Palermo are reported. Dust samples for analysis were collected from 45 indoor environments. Total PAHs concentrations in indoor dusts ranged from 36 to 34 453 μg kg −1  d.w. To correlate indoor and outdoor pollution we analyze, also, the particulate matter and PAHs levels samples collected in four stations. The percentage measured in indoor dusts results more low than that found outside. The values of isomeric ratios for the differe…

Biologically active properties of plant extracts in cosmetic emulsions

2020

Abstract Describes biologically active properties waters plant extracts of domestic herbaceous species as a part cosmetic emulsion in this article. In particular, the antioxidant features related to vitamins, flavonoids, coloring, extractive and tannins were reported. The following research methods as qualitative analysis on groups of biologically active substances, thin-layer chromatography, titrimetry and photometry were used in the work. The ability of extracts to influence the physico-chemical, organoleptic and antioxidant properties of cosmetic emulsion samples was established. The ability of the extracts to exhibit antioxidant and prooxidant effects in cosmetic emulsion samples was de…

The Mafia Psychology: The Study of the ‘Ndrangheta and the Cosa Nostra

2016

According to many explorative analyses, the more diffused Italian Mafias represent a real global threat. In order to better understand the dynamics of the organized crime as well as its destructive effects on the economic, environmental, and psychosocial spheres, the chapter aims to deepen the devastating impacts upon its victims. The common traits and the specific characteristic of the Sicilian Mafia and the Calabrian ‘Ndrangheta are detected through the group analytic assumptions relating to Mafia Psychism. The contextualized concepts of blood ties, family roots, power, and territory make the Mafias’ organizational culture first of all an anthropological and a psychological identity. Ther…

Exploring a new incubation model for FinTechs: Regulatory sandboxes

2021

Research on incubation models indicates that incubators and accelerators are crucial catalysts for the development of start-ups. To facilitate start-ups in financial markets, several regulatory authorities have adopted a new incubation model called a ‘regulatory sandbox’. Regulatory sandboxes enable eligible applicants to test their technology-enabled financial solutions for a certain period of time (subject to conditions the regulator imposes). As such, these instruments allow innovation while preventing severe instability in financial markets caused by systemic risk. Despite their importance, management research has devoted little attention to studying how sandboxes operate as a new incub…

Niveles de conciencia del profesorado en su función orientadora: una tipología enmarcada en la lógica difusa

2018

This article presents a work on what we have called levels of consciousness of teachers who are not specialized in educational and professional guidance functions following the notion of the so called fuzzy logic. This analysis is part of a research on secondary school teachers for the context, carried out in ten autonomous communities for two years, which seeks to get to know the different representations of teachers, considering that the identification of guidance models resulting from different elements of social nature. To do this, we analyzed the discursive material obtained through discussion groups in which teachers of secondary education participated in order to analyze their levels…

Stakeholder Thinking and a Pedagogical Approach in Public Relations Processes: Experience From Transition Societies

2007

Public relations (PR) and communication management (CM) processes have mostly been studies in stable democratic societies. This article, focusing on the republics of the former Soviet Union in Central and Eastern Europe, takes a stakeholder analytical approach to the processes of PR and CM in such transition societies and the emergence of Western-style PR and CM concepts during the change from totalitarianism to democracy. Selected state institutions and businesses operating before, during, and after the transition period were examined; personal and questionnaire interviews were conducted, and policy documents and media texts were analyzed using quantitative and qualitative analysis and the…

Quantitative and qualitative analysis of the mental models deployed by undergraduate students in explaining thermally activated phenomena

2017

In this contribution we describe a research aimed at pointing out the quality of mental models undergraduate engineering students deploy when asked to create explanations for phenomena/processes and/or use a given model in the same context. Student responses to a specially designed written questionnaire are initially analyzed using researcher-generated categories of reasoning, based on the Physics Education Research literature on student understanding of the relevant physics content. The inferred students’ mental models about the analyzed phenomena are categorized as practical, descriptive, or explanatory, based on an analysis of student responses to the questionnaire. A qualitative analysi…
