Fast apparent oscillations of fundamental constants
2019
Precision spectroscopy of atoms and molecules allows one to search for and to put stringent limits on the variation of fundamental constants. These experiments are typically interpreted in terms of variations of the fine structure constant $\alpha$ and the electron to proton mass ratio $\mu=m_e/m_p$. Atomic spectroscopy is usually less sensitive to other fundamental constants, unless the hyperfine structure of atomic levels is studied. However, the number of possible dimensionless constants increases when we allow for fast variations of the constants, where "fast" is determined by the time scale of the response of the studied species or experimental apparatus used. In this case, the relevan…
Measurement of theB0→π−ℓ+νandB+→η(′)ℓ+νbranching fractions, theB0→π−ℓ+νandB+→ηℓ+νform-factor shapes, and determination of|Vub|
2011
We report the results of a study of the exclusive charmless semileptonic decays, B^+ → η^((′))l^+ν and B^0 → π^-l^+ν, undertaken with approximately 464 × 10^6 BB pairs collected at the Υ(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector. The analysis uses events in which the signal B decays are reconstructed with a loose neutrino reconstruction technique. We obtain partial branching fractions for B^+ → ηl^+ν and B^0 → π^-l^+ν decays in three and 12 bins of q^2, respectively, from which we extract the f_+(q^2) form-factor shapes and the total branching fractions B(B^+ → ηl^+ν)=(0.36 ± 0.05_(stat) ± 0.04_(syst))× 10^(-4) and B(B^0 → π^-l^+ν)=(1.42 ± 0.05_(stat) ± 0.07_(syst)) × 10^(-4). We also measure B…
On some issues in the computational modelling of spacer-filled channels for membrane distillation
2017
Abstract This study addresses issues which arise in the computational and experimental modelling of flow and heat/mass transfer in membrane distillation and other processes adopting spacer-filled channels (either planar or spiral wound), but have not been sufficiently clarified in the literature so far. Most of the argumentations presented are based on original computational results obtained by the authors by finite volume simulations; some literature results are also considered. The questions addressed regard the choice of scales for the reduction of data and the definition of dimensionless numbers ( Re , f , Nu , Sh ); the definition of average heat or mass transfer coefficients; the comb…
New-stage discharge relationships for free and submerged sluice gates
2012
Abstract The flow movement through a sluice gate is investigated for both free and submerged flow conditions. For free flow condition, the current dimensionless formula, indicated acceptable accuracy; while for submerged flow condition it was modified especially for low submerged condition. In this regard, Buckingham theorem along with the Incomplete Self-Similarity concept was employed and a new stage–discharge relationship was developed accordingly. Also, to achieve a suitable formula for submerged flow condition being accurate in low submergence, the maximum tailwater depth allowing the free flow condition and head loss factor were identified as missing parameters in the functional dimen…
The Heisenberg picture in the analysis of stock markets and in other sociological contexts
2007
We review some recent results concerning some toy models of stock markets. Our models are suggested by the discrete nature of the number of shares and of the cash which are exchanged in a real market, and by the existence of conserved quantities, like the total number of shares or some linear combination of the cash and the shares. This suggests to use the same tools used in quantum mechanics and, in particular, the Heisenberg picture to describe the time behavior of the portfolio of each trader. We finally propose the use of this same framework in other sociological contexts.
Dynamics of the Selkov oscillator.
2018
A classical example of a mathematical model for oscillations in a biological system is the Selkov oscillator, which is a simple description of glycolysis. It is a system of two ordinary differential equations which, when expressed in dimensionless variables, depends on two parameters. Surprisingly it appears that no complete rigorous analysis of the dynamics of this model has ever been given. In this paper several properties of the dynamics of solutions of the model are established. With a view to studying unbounded solutions a thorough analysis of the Poincar\'e compactification of the system is given. It is proved that for any values of the parameters there are solutions which tend to inf…
From microscopic to macroscopic description of Josephson dynamics in one-dimensional arrays of weakly-coupled superconducting islands
2015
Abstract By starting from a microscopic quantum mechanical description of Josephson dynamics of a one-dimensional array of N coupled superconductors, we obtain a set of linear differential equations for the system order parameter and for additional macroscopic physical quantities. With opportune considerations, we adapt this description to two coupled superconductors, obtaining the celebrated Feynman model for Josephson junctions. These results confirm the correspondence between the microscopic picture and the semi-classical Ohta’s model adopted in describing the superconducting phase dynamics in multi-barrier Josephson junctions.
Study on Interfacial Surface in Modified Spray Tower
2019
This paper presents an analysis of the changes in interfacial surface and the size of droplets formed in a spray tower. The interfacial surface and the size of droplets formed are of fundamental importance to the performance of the equipment, both in terms of pressure drop and process efficiency. Liquid film and droplet sizes were measured using a microphotography technique. The confusors studied were classical, with profiled inside surface, and with double profiled inside surface. The liquids studied were water and aqueous solutions of high-molecular polyacrylamide (PAA) of power-law characteristics. The ranges of process Reynolds number studied were as follows: ReG &isin
Evaluation of building heating loads with dimensional analysis: Application of the Buckingham π theorem
2017
Abstract A detailed assessment of building energy performance requires a large amount of input data concerning building typology, environmental conditions, envelope thermophysical properties, geometry, control strategies, and several other parameters. Notwithstanding, the use of specialized software tools poses many challenges in regards to the retrieval of reliable and detailed information, setting a steep learning curve for engineers and energy managers. To speed up the preliminary assessment phase, it might be more convenient to resort to a simplified model that allows the evaluation of heating energy demand with a good level of accuracy and without excessive computational cost or user e…
