Rethinking Monetary Policy with Reference to Monetary Circuit Theory

2011

Standard monetary policy is grounded in the quantity theory of money, which links changes in the general price level to excess money that would induce excess demand on the goods market. This article shows that this theoretical foundation is misleading and harmful to growth. This is so because price determination is multifaceted. Central banks, especially the European Central Bank, currently tighten credit conditions whereas money is not an issue. In this way, they act not only on demand but also on the supply of goods. The additional reference made to rational expectations is an aggravating factor. Is there another way to conduct monetary policy? In this article it is argued that circuit th…

The P* model and its performance for the Spanish economy

2000

The performance of the P∗ model is tested as an inflation forecaster for the Spanish economy. It is shown that log-run relationships work as expected according to the model and the Quantitative Theory of Money. The Error Correction Model constructed by using the gap between actual prices and the long-term equilibrium price level as an error correction term, offers a consistent explanation for the short-run dynamics in prices. On the other hand, the P∗ approach shows a forecasting ability similar to that presented for other countries in several studies, although the degree of accuracy in the prediction is not specially satisfactory, mainly for the period 1989:3- 1992:3, when the credibility …

Improvement of Inventory Control under Parametric Uncertainty and Constraints

2011

The aim of the present paper is to show how the statistical inference equivalence principle (SIEP), the idea of which belongs to the authors, may be employed in the particular case of finding the effective statistical decisions for the multi-product inventory problems with constraints. To our knowledge, no analytical or efficient numerical method for finding the optimal policies under parametric uncertainty for the multi-product inventory problems with constraints has been reported in the literature. Using the (equivalent) predictive distributions, this paper represents an extension of analytical results obtained for unconstrained optimization under parametric uncertainty to the case of con…

Stochastic approach to highway traffic

2004

We analyze the characteristic features of jam formation on a circular one-lane road. We have applied an optimal velocity model including stochastic noise, where cars are treated as moving and interacting particles. The motion of N cars is described by the system of 2 N stochastic differential equations with multiplicative white noise. Our system of cars behaves in qualitatively different ways depending on the values of control parameters c (dimensionless density), b (sensitivity parameter characterising the fastness of relaxation), and α (dimensionless noise intensity). In analogy to the gas-liquid phase transition in supersaturated vapour at low enough temperatures, we observe three differ…

Permanent magnet centrifugal pump for liquid aluminium stirring

2016

In liquid aluminium processing, it is important to ensure continuous mixing of the molten metal to ensure temperature and composition homogeneity, and to improve degassing of the metal. Aluminium and its alloys are often processed in special degassing chambers after preparation in order to avoid segregation and to improve material structure, and to avoid gas pores. This extra step increases material costs and may cause material contamination. In this article, we present the idea to use centrifugal permanent magnet stirrer to induce liquid aluminium motion through thick furnace wall by creating high-speed local liquid metal jet. Analytical estimation, numerical modelling and experimental tes…

Søvn og idrettslig prestasjon blant unge toppidrettsutøvere i Sør-Norge : En kartleggingsstudie av måleinstrumenter, søvnvaner, og søvn og idrettslig…

2019

Masteroppgave idrettsvitenskap ME517 - Universitetet i Agder 2019 Background: Sleep is important for both recovery and performance during training. Previous studies about sleep and performance are usually excecuted within competition periods, and measured by one or two of the three instruments Sensewear, Philips or PSQI.Aim: The aim of this study is to compare the questionnaire PSQI and the activity measure Sensewear with the Philips' goal of sleep, to investigate whether young top athletes have the recommended amount of sleep and whether there is a link between sleep and performance.Method: A total of 17 young top athletes participated in this study. To register the amount of sleep the ins…

Is VIRTU4L larger than VIR7UAL? Automatic processing of number quantity and lexical representations in leet words.

2015

Recent research has shown that leet words (i.e., words in which some of the letters are replaced by visually similar digits; e.g., VIRTU4L) can be processed as their base words without much cost. However, it remains unclear whether the digits inserted in leet words are simply processed as letters or whether they are simultaneously processed as numbers (i.e., in terms of access to their quantity representation). To address this question, we conducted two experiments that examined the size congruity effect (i.e., when comparisons of the physical size of numbers are affected by their numerical magnitudes) in a physical-size judgment task. Participants were presented with pairs of leet words th…

Improved Skyrme forces for Hartree-Fock seniority calculations

1992

Abstract The relationship between Skyrme parameters and physical quantities in nuclear matter is discussed in detail and bounds for some parameters are derived. Improved density-dependent two-body Skyrme forces are obtained by a least-squares fit of all the parameters simultaneously to a large set of data, including nuclear matter, mass formula and Landau parameters, and data of finite nuclei. Special attention is paid to the pairing properties of the interaction. These forces are used to perform self-consistent calculations in spherical closed-shell nuclei and Ca open-shell isotopes, within the Hartree-Fock seniority method. Good agreement with experimental data is obtained.

Modelling mass transfer properties in a biotrickling filter for the removal of isopropanol

2014

Abstract A study was carried out to model mass transfer properties in biotrickling filters, treating isopropanol as the target pollutant. This study was extended to the mass transfer of oxygen related to the fact that the treatment of hydrophilic compounds by biotrickling filtration is often limited by oxygen. A simple method for each compound was developed based on their physical properties. The influence of temperature on Henry’s law constant of isopropanol was determined. An increase of 1.8 per 10 °C for the dimensionless Henry’s law constant was obtained. The determination of the overall mass transfer coefficients of isopropanol (KGa) was carried out, obtaining values between 500 and 18…

The use of non-cavitating coupling fluids for intensifying sonoelectrochemical processes

2020

Abstract For the first time, we have investigated the beneficial effects of non-cavitating coupling fluids and their moderate overpressures in enhancing mass-transfer and acoustic energy transfer in a double cell micro-sonoreactor. Silicon and engine oils of different viscosities were used as non-cavitating coupling fluids. A formulated monoethylene glycol (FMG), which is a regular cooling fluid, was also used as reference. It was found that silicon oil yielded a maximum acoustic energy transfer (3.05 W/cm2) from the double jacketed cell to the inner cell volume, at 1 bar of coupling fluid overpressure which was 2.5 times higher than the regular FMG cooling fluid. It was also found that the…
