The radiative return at phi- and B-factories: FSR for muon pair production at next-to-leading order

2004

Muon pair production through the radiative return is of importance for a measurement of the hadronic production cross section in two ways: it provides an independent calibration and it may give rise to an important background for a measurement of the pion form factor. With this motivation the Monte Carlo event generator PHOKHARA is extended to include next-to-leading order radiative corrections to the reaction $e^+e^-\to \mu^+\mu^-\gamma$. Furthermore, virtual ISR corrections to FSR from pions are introduced, which extends the applicability of the generator into a new kinematical regime. Finally, the effect of photon vacuum polarization is introduced into this new version of the generator.

Muon-pair production by atmospheric muons in cosmoALEPH

2006

Data from a dedicated cosmic ray run of the ALEPH detector were used in a study of muon trident production, i.e., muon pairs produced by muons. Here the overburden and the calorimeters are the target materials while the ALEPH time projection chamber provides the momentum measurements. A theoretical estimate of the muon trident cross section is obtained by developing a Monte Carlo simulation for muon propagation in the overburden and the detector. Two muon trident candidates were found to match the expected theoretical pattern. The observed production rate implies that the nuclear form factor cannot be neglected for muon tridents.

On the anomalies in the latest LHCb data

2016

Depending on the assumptions on the power corrections to the exclusive b -> s l+ l- decays, the latest data of the LHCb collaboration - based on the 3 fb^-1 data set and on two different experimental analysis methods - still shows some tensions with the SM predictions. We present a detailed analysis of the theoretical inputs and various global fits to all the available b -> s l+ l- data. This constitutes the first global analysis of the new data of the LHCb collaboration based on the hypothesis that these tensions can be at least partially explained by new physics contributions. In our model-independent analysis we present one-, two-, four-, and also five-dimensional global fits in th…

Vector form factor of the pion in chiral effective field theory

2015

The vector form factor of the pion is calculated in the framework of chiral effective field theory with vector mesons included as dynamical degrees of freedom. To construct an effective field theory with a consistent power counting, the complex-mass scheme is applied.

MEASUREMENT OF THE TAU-POLARIZATION AT THE Z-RESONANCE

1993

Using 18.8 pb-1 of data collected in 1990 and 1991, ALEPH has measured the tau polarisation in the decay modes tau-->enunuBAR, tau-->mununuBAR, tau-->rhonu tau-->a1nu, using both the individual tau decay kinematics and the event acollinearity. The measurement of the tau polarisation as a function of the production polar angle yields the two parameters A(tau) and A(e), where A(l) = 2g(V)l g(A)l/[(g(V)l)2 + (g(A)l)2]. The results A(tau) = 0.143 +/- 0.023 and A(e) = 0. 120 +/- 0.026 are consistent with the hypothesis of electron-tau universality. Assuming universality yields a measurement of the effective weak mixing angle sin 2theta(W)eff = 0.2332 +/- 0.0022.

The End Point Tagger physics program at A2@MAMI

2017

The A2-Collaboration uses a beam of real photons from the tagged photon facility at the electron accelerator MAMI in Mainz, Germany, to study photo-produced mesons. A new tagging device allows access to the higher photon beam energy range of 1.4 to 1.6 GeV. A large dataset containing more than 6 million η ′ and roughly 29 million ω decays has been obtained. Analyses are ongoing, including a study of the cusp effect and Dalitz plot in η ′ → ηπ 0 π 0 , giving insight to the π π scattering length and the structure of the ηππ system, as well as the measurement of the electromagnetic transition form factor in η ′ → e + e − γ , a cross section measurement of γ p → 3 π 0 , and branching ratio anal…

Quantum electrodynamics for vector mesons

2005

Quantum electrodynamics for $\rho$ mesons is considered. It is shown that, at tree level, the value of the gyromagnetic ratio of the $\rho^+$ is fixed to 2 in a self-consistent effective quantum field theory. Further, the mixing parameter of the photon and the neutral vector meson is equal to the ratio of electromagnetic and strong couplings, leading to the mass difference $M_{\rho^0}-M_{\rho^\pm}\sim 1 {\rm MeV}$ at tree order.

Precision of a data-driven estimate of hadronic light-by-light scattering in the muong−2: Pseudoscalar-pole contribution

2016

Within a dispersive approach to hadronic light-by-light scattering in the muon g-2, the evaluation of the numerically dominant pseudoscalar-pole contribution involves the pseudoscalar-photon transition form factor FPγ*γ*(-Q12,-Q22) with P=π0,η,η′ and, in general, two off-shell photons with spacelike momenta Q1,22. We show that for π0(η,η′), the region of photon momenta below about 1(1.5) GeV gives the main contribution to hadronic light-by-light scattering. We then discuss how the precision of current and future measurements of the single- and double-virtual transition form factor in different momentum regions impacts the precision of a data-driven estimate of this contribution to hadronic …

On the radiative decay of orthoquarkonium via two intermediate gluons: 1−− (Q $$\bar Q$$ ) → γ+1++ (q $$\bar q$$ )

1983

We investigate the decay of a heavy3S1 (Q\(\bar Q\) vector meson into a real photon and two off-shell intermediate gluons which create a3P1(q\(\bar q\)) axial vector meson. As an application we suggest to look for the decayJ/ϕ→ψ+D(1285) andΥ→γ1+P c /χ1++→γ1→γ2+J/ψ.

A variational method from the variance of energy

2005

A variational method is studied based on the minimum of energy variance. The method is tested on exactly soluble problems in quantum mechanics, and is shown to be a useful tool whenever the properties of states are more relevant than the eigenvalues. In quantum field theory the method provides a consistent second order extension of the gaussian effective potential.
